Principal Mrs Linda Barton
Principal’s Chit Chat
It’s only been a week since our last newsletter but as it is such a busy time we’ve produced an
extra newsletter.
Last week our two selected North-West cross-country finalists competed in the Y7/8 Auckland
Championships – and what a superb result – congratulations to Nick Protheroe who came 58
out of 130 runners in the Year 7 boys race, and to Michael Hill who came 45 out of 100 Year 8
boys. You both did us proud!
Congratulations also to our Rippa Rugby players for representing Waioneke so well at the
Interschool competition last Thursday. These students played tough games on a cold, wet day
and really demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and skills despite the conditions- cheers!
Thank-you to all of the wonderful parents who supported both events.
We have a lot of events coming up in the next couple of weeks to raise funds for the school
camps, it would be neat to have lots of community involvement with this:
To raise funds we have arranged:
A sausage sizzle at the Interschool Chess Comp – which is this Friday at school, can you help?
The Shelly Beach Gala this Saturday between 10 a.m. and Midday – come along and catch up
with community members, bring your white-elephant to sell in the car boot sale, and join in with
the BBQ, fire-engine rides etc
The Yummy lunch options for students on the following two Wednesdays: $4 a plate, next
Wednesday 15th is Nachos and Wednesday the 22nd is American Hotdogs (do send your money
in to Maria if you haven’t already ordered)
Other school events include our School Working Bee, the Jump Rope for Heart afternoon and
Loud Shirt Day . Followed by camp and Calf Club in Term Four
Hope to see you Saturday
Have a great week!
Linda
SCHOOL WORKING BEE - Sunday 19th September
Just a reminder about our planned working bee: we have started work on the school gardens but
as it’s such a big task for a couple of people so we were hoping some keen school community
members would be able to give us a helping hand and have our gardens ready for the start of
Spring.
Our wish list is to finish digging out any scruffy plants, fill the planters with soil, trim the flax, do
some minor tidy up maintenance, complete the planting and spread the covering bark. Our aim
is to start at 10 a.m. and finish with a BBQ at 1pm.
Your attendance would be really, really valued so if you can come and didn’t fill in last weeks
return slip could you please phone Maria and let her know you are coming so we know how
many to cater for on the day 
CAN YOU HELP OUT AT THE INTERSCHOOL CHESS TOURNAMENT?
RUNNING A SAUSAGE SIZZLE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE JUNIOR AND
SENIOR CAMPS
OR HELPING WITH THE GAMES DRAW THIS FRIDAY – 10th September
On Friday September 10th Waioneke is hosting the interschool chess competition. We will be
hosting participants from 6 other schools on this day, and including our players, we are
expecting over 100 children to attend. It will certainly put us on the map for quite a number of
people in the wider North-West district!
We thought this would be a really good opportunity to fundraise to help the PTFA with the camp
support, so have offered a sausage sizzle to the chess players – so we’d love to have a couple
of people to man the BBQ on the day
We also need a couple of people to help Paul (the chess instructor) with the chess games draw
Please phone Maria and let us know if you can help. It would be much appreciated
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - Monday 13th September 1pm
Students have been busy learning new skipping moves at school for the Jump Rope for Heart
Skipping Challenge. Waioneke will get 25% of the funds raised which will buy additional sport
gear. Please fill in the attached challenge sheet and return it to school by 09 September.
LOUD SHIRT DAY – Friday 17th September
All the children at Waioneke are learning sign language and we would like to take part in the first
ever LOUD SHIRT DAY, money raised is donated to the Hearing House who support children
with hearing issues. There will be awards given for the loudest shirt, Kiwiana shirt, most bling
shirt, most local shirt and best self made shirt. Please bring $1 on the day.
SENIOR SCHOOL CAMP – Tuesday 12 October – Friday 15th October
If you haven’t returned the camp form can you please do so as we need to phone this week to
confirm numbers. It really is a neat experience and with the PTFA support the camp fee is very
reasonable (thanks again PTFA!)
The deposit of $40 is due for those attending. Payments can be made online to ASB

CALF CLUB SATURDAY OCTOBER 30TH
THE CALF CLUB SCHEME
The Waioneke PTFA have set up a calf club scheme as part of their fundraising efforts – and to
provide an opportunity for students to raise a sponsored calf without the worry of what to do with
it when it grows up. The PTFA will buy the calf and the milk powder/meal and when your child
has finished with the animal it becomes part of the Waioneke School Herd, which is a great
fundraiser.
No one has come forward this year to raise a calf and it would be really neat if we had at least
two for this year’s scheme.
Children learn so much about responsibility during the process of caring for a calf, and they can
develop a lovely bond with their young animal.
The PTFA locate a calf for you, provide you with knowledgeable support and also provide all the
milk powder (without any powder cost to yourself).
Please consider if you would like to raise a calf. If you have any questions or would like one
please phone Kim or Anne (phone numbers below)
CALF CLUB DAY
The time of year has rolled around again when we start getting ready for calf club. This is a
great way for your child to be involved in one of the many things that are unique to rural schools.
The purpose of calf club is to encourage children to take an active interest in the welfare and
presentation of a farm animal such as a calf, lamb or goat and to experience the many benefits
like motivation, commitment, responsibility and compassion that comes with raising a pet.
Our Calf club day will be held on the 30th October, animals can be born from the 1 July 2010.
Please remember that there is always loads of support and people you can call on for help or
advice if you would like to give it a go but are worried that you might not know how.
Please call Anne Holst 4202505 or Kim Ross 4202089 as they can help find you that perfect pet
or just answer any of your questions.
If you have a Calf Club or/and Group Day Trophy could you please return it to school.
Other Calf Club events:
Our kids are very hands-on and creative so we also have planned some projects that
students can work on in the holidays -photos, scarecrows, hanging basket and a senior
farm/country theme model.
More precise information about these will be given out to the children before the end of
term.
NETBALL
Congratulations to all players, coaches, managers, family and friends for such a fantastic netball
season this year. Waioneke School was highly commended for their number of players that
were successful in reps this year, we also had a high number of student umpires. Kaipara
netball has asked other larger schools to take note of our smaller school and the hard work and
commitment that has ben shown over the season. Our Y8 players were farewelled with a
Kaipara Netball Centre game ball and the centre are hoping to have a Y9 team competition next
season so all our fabulous Y8’s can come back and play.
