A Paper Bag Speech Purpose: The purpose of the Paper Bag Speech is for you to think deeply about what you value. This can help you come to class with a sense of purpose. You will share your values with your science family and listen as your science family shares their values. This can help us begin to know each other. Directions: Choose 3 objects that represent your values. Put each object in the paper bag. Be prepared to explain how each object represents one of your values. For example, I chose the following 3 objects to represent 3 of my values: 1. A shoestring To me this shoestring represents challenge. This shoestring belongs to my running shoes. Each time I run, I push myself to run faster and farther than the previous time. Sometimes I don’t want to do it because I know it is uncomfortable and hard. I have to convince myself to keep going and sometimes that takes creativity and support from others. Immediately after finishing, I feel good about what I have accomplished. When I challenge myself in any arena in life, those are the times I am most of proud of myself and satisfied with my life. I value challenge. 2. A drawing To me this drawing represents kindness. I chose this drawing because my thoughtful daughter made it for me. She is constantly thinking of others and trying to make their day better in small ways. This drawing reminds me that it is important for me to be kind to family, friends, students, colleagues, and strangers because small gestures can make a huge impact. 3. A scarf To me this scarf represents creativity. I chose this scarf because my daughter recently went through the process of creatively designing a scarf out of paper and string. Her process tested her patience, required redesign when original ideas failed, it took time, and she had to carefully choose words to communicate effectively with me about what she needed for support BUT in the end she solved her problem with ingenuity. I believe that the ability to solve one’s problems leads to independence and empowerment. Solving problems requires creativity.
