Transportation on the UNT campus is managed by the Sullivant Public Safety Center (SPSC), which strives to offer the widest array of transportation options possible while ensuring the safety of the students, staff, and faculty. The majority of UNT students commute from other areas of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex; therefore, the main focus of this section is campus parking. However, we will also discuss the transportation options for students living on campus or in Denton. Campus Parking If you plan to park on campus, make sure you know and understand the campus parking policy. There are a limited number of parking spaces around the perimeter of the campus, and you may park in metered parking or in the UNT parking garage. You must purchase a parking permit to park any UNT parking lot. Please refer to Table 1 to review the types of permits available. Shuttle service is available from Fouts Field to multiple campus locations until 2:30 a.m. and escort service from the UNT Police Department is available after 2:30 a.m. Permit and payment policies for all UNT parking lots, parking meters, and the UNT Parking Garage are enforced Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. If you get a 10 Housing and Dining Services parking ticket go immediately to the SPSC to either file an appeal or pay your fine. If you do not take care of the matter you will be charged late fees. If you receive a second citation before paying the first citation, your vehicle may be impounded or a boot may be place on the vehicle. For more information on parking permits, fines or rules please visit the Sullivant Public Safety Center at: Sullivant Public Safety Center 1700 Wilshire Street (940) 565-3020 http://www.unt.edu/parking Hours of Operation: 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays Parking Office Manager: Sherry Latham, email: lathams@pdl.admin.unt.edu Alternative Transportation The E-trans shuttle service, in partnership with LINK and the City of Denton is a great alternative to driving your car to school. E-trans will pick you up and take you to different destinations through out campus. Visit http://www.unt.edu/etrans/ride.html for specific prices, city wide pickup locations, and destinations. LINK is part of the City of Denton's bus Transit System. Students and faculty with a valid ID card can ride free of charge from any destination LINK serves. Visit http://www.unt.edu/etrans/link.html for pick up times and locations. Carpooling, walking and riding your bike are also great alternatives to driving to school. Parking is hard to come by at the University of North Texas and permits are expensive. You will save time and money by using public transportation or carpooling. Walking and riding your bicycle will not only save you money but improve your health. Consider alternative transportation, you’ll be glad you did! Connecting for Success is a program designed to help students reach their academic goals. Services offered through the Connecting for Success program include: Reading and Study Skills (RASSL) Speed Reading Supplemental Instruction/Tutoring (SI) Volunteer Tutor Program The Reading and Study Skills (RASSL) and speed reading services are separate classes designed to help students improve in areas such as reading comprehension. RASSL covers the following topics: Time management Listening and note-taking Study and review methods Memory and concentration Test-taking strategies Learning styles Test anxiety RASSL classes meet 90 minutes per week for five-week period. Two sessions are offered during the fall and spring semesters, and one session is offered during each summer semester. Students are required to pay a $20.00 materials fee. Supplemental Instruction/Tutoring (SI) is a non-remedial program that increases student performance and retention. The SI program focuses on traditionally difficult courses and provides regularly scheduled study sessions organized by SI leaders. SI leaders are students who have passed a particular course and have been recommended to the SI program by their instructors to tutor other students taking the course. The leaders are assigned a class section; they attend all class sessions, take notes, read all assigned material, and conduct three or more 50 minute SI study sessions each week. They also discuss the class frequently with the instructors to better understand what is expected of the students. The Volunteer Tutor Program is a free service offered to students. Academically successful UNT students are invited to participate in the program and help their fellow students by Research and Tutoring Services 35 tutoring them in a variety of courses. Students in need of a tutor contact the tutor directly and make arrangements to meet with the student in a public location. If you wish to receive tutoring, the program coordinator will help you determine which services are suited to your needs. Student Employment Services The Student Employment Services provides part-time employment opportunities for currently enrolled students to help them offset their college expenses and develop a good work record. Students currently enrolled or accepted at the University of North Texas can use Student Employment Services. Eligible students include: Any student who has applied for admission at UNT and has been accepted to the University and intends to enroll for the next long-term semester (a written letter of acceptance, a permit to register, or a class schedule stamped "Paid" is acceptable) Any student who has attended classes within the past year Any student currently enrolled at UNT regardless of the number of credit hours for which they are enrolled 40 Employment Services Types Of Employment UNT offers two types of student on campus employment: Regular Hourly or College Work Study jobs. Regular Hourly positions are open to all UNT students. Students do not have to qualify for financial aid to apply for these positions. Students who want to apply for these jobs will need to prepare a resume and cover letter for the department(s). Student Employment & Career Services has sample resumes and cover letters for on campus positions. The samples are available at the Student Employment & Career Services offices (University Union, Suite 320) or through the online registration system. The office also offers resume workshops on a regular basis. A student who receives a College Work Study Awards through the Financial Aid Office may apply for a College Work Study position. Qualified students must submit a resume and cover letter to the department offering the position. Applying for an On-Campus Job There are two ways to apply for on-campus job. Students must either bring their UNT ID to the Student Employment & Career Services office (University Union, Suite 320) or email their name, birth date, and last four digits of their social security number to cocmail@dsa.admin.unt.edu to have their enrollment verified. Student Employment Services lists on campus employment openings ranging from research, to clerical, to custodial work, on an online job listing system. Students must set up their profile and upload a resume into the online system in order to apply for positions. Departments at UNT make a special effort to hire currently enrolled students. More than 7,000 students are employed on campus. On-campus positions are generally in the clerical, custodial, computer, and food service areas. Departments offering employment will frequently arrange a student’s work schedule around their class schedule; however, students should try to schedule classes to accommodate a consistent work schedule. Creating blocks of time for work, such as 8:00 a.m. to12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., is best, since many departments prefer students to work for a minimum three-hour block of time. Employment Services 41 Establishing Work Hours A student employee who is listed as Regular Hourly may work no more than 30 hours per week during regular times of enrollment. Both US citizens and non-resident aliens may work up to 40 hours per wee k between periods of regular enrollment (semester breaks or during the summer months). The College Work Study award normally accommodates a 20 hour work week; however, a College Work Study student can arrange with the employing department to work up to 30 hours per week. Career Services Career Services helps current and former UNT students seek full-time employment following graduation or certification. Career Services serves as a liaison between students and employers representing education, business, industry, government, and public service who seek to fulfill personnel needs. Services provided include: Resume workshop Employer mock interview Dress for success Cooperative Education and Internships Cooperative Education (Co-op) combines classroom study with planned and supervised work experience. The program’s purpose is to give students a broader educational experience with the added benefit of a payment for their work. The work is designed to further individual careers after graduation. Employers who hire students strive to offer challenging internships which complement classroom studies. Co-op students usually return to the classroom with greater determination to complete their degrees and to make even better grades. They realize the importance of the college degree to advance in the career field they have chosen. Employers who offer internships encourage students to complete their education and students must continue working toward a degree to retain their internship position. 42 Employment Services For more information, please contact the Co-op offices at: Cooperative Education and Internships Chilton Hall, Room 204 http://www.unt.edu/coop For more information, visit www.unt.edu/ses.
