information you are looking for as fast as possible. Also there will be times when you may be
asked to visit a web page. It is advised that you are near a computer so you can take full
advantage of all the information inside.
We included a campus map as well as a Denton area map. The Denton map is simply a guide
to consult if you choose to venture off campus. The UNT map contains color coded circles to
help you navigate the campus. Look for these circles in the guide sections.

Registration Procedures
At the beginning of the first semester you attend the University of North Texas you will be
required to attend a new student orientation where you should register for classes. The dates
of these orientations vary year to year; however, you can find all the information on
orientation schedules at www.unt.edu/orientation/fresh.htm. If you are not attending an
orientation you can also register by phone or over the Internet. To see what date you are
cleared to register, please consult the schedule of classes.
New students must see an advisor and receive an advising code prior to orientation. You will
only need an advising code to register for your first classes; however, advising is also a
useful tool to help returning students plan semesters. You can find the advising office for
your degree by calling (940) 565-2000 and asking for the department of your major. Once
you receive your advising code you can register for classes. To add a course to your schedule
you will need the following information:

Advising Code: A four digit code received during advisement for your first semester

numbers are listed in the Schedule of Classes (e.g. ENGL 1180)

Section Number: A three-digit number representing the course days and times, and the
course instructor. Section numbers are listed in the Schedule of Classes (e.g. 001 =
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., staff)

EUID - UNT Enterprise User ID (Web-Registration only): A combination of your three
initials followed by four numbers which represents your university website identification.
You can obtain your EUID though the website. You will only need an EUID for
registering online and checking your account information

Transportation Services
One of the most critical decisions you will need to make about college is how you will get to
class. Transportation on the UNT campus is managed by the Sullivant Public Safety Center
(SPSC), which strives to offer the widest array of transportation options possible while
ensuring the safety of the students, staff, and faculty. The majority of UNT students commute
from other areas of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex; therefore, the main focus of this section
is campus parking. However, we will also discuss the transportation options for students
living on campus or in Denton.
Campus Parking
If you plan to park on campus, make sure you know and understand the campus parking
policy. There are a limited number of parking spaces around the perimeter of the campus,
and you may park in metered parking or in the UNT parking garage. You must purchase a
parking permit to park any UNT parking lot. Please refer to Table 1 to review the types of
permits available.

Students may also park at Fouts Field (the football stadium) with any valid parking permit.
Shuttle service is available from Fouts Field to multiple campus locations until 2:30 a.m. and
escort service from the UNT Police Department is available after 2:30 a.m.
Permit and payment policies for all UNT parking lots, parking meters, and the UNT Parking
Garage are enforced Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. If you get a

parking ticket go immediately to the SPSC to either file an appeal or pay your fine. If you do
not take care of the matter you will be charged late fees. If you receive a second citation
before paying the first citation, your vehicle may be impounded or a boot may be place on
the vehicle.

Alternative Transportation
The E-trans shuttle service, in partnership with LINK and the City of Denton is a great
alternative to driving your car to school. E-trans will pick you up and take you to different
destinations through out campus. Visit http://www.unt.edu/etrans/ride.html for specific
prices, city wide pickup locations, and destinations.
LINK is part of the City of Denton's bus Transit System. Students and faculty with a valid ID
card can ride free of charge from any destination LINK serves. Visit
http://www.unt.edu/etrans/link.html for pick up times and locations.
Carpooling, walking and riding your bike are also great alternatives to driving to school.
Parking is hard to come by at the University of North Texas and permits are expensive. You
will save time and money by using public transportation or carpooling. Walking and riding
your bicycle will not only save you money but improve your health. Consider alternative
transportation, you’ll be glad you did!

Research and Tutoring
Services
Research and Tutoring Services 31
Research and Tutoring Services
UNT strives to provide students with the information and help they need to reach their degree
goals. This section details the libraries, labs, and tutoring services offered by the university.
Research Services
UNT offers four libraries to help students find the information they need for course work.
The university also offers eight general access labs to provide a place for students to study
and work on assignments.
Libraries
Libraries are one of the best resources UNT provides to its students. There are four libraries
located on campus with an approximate total of two million catalog entries. You can borrow
books and other materials from the libraries with a valid student I.D. The libraries are also
equipped with printing and photocopying services, and the Interlibrary Loan Service allows

instructors to better understand what is expected of the students.
The Volunteer Tutor Program is a free service offered to students. Academically successful
UNT students are invited to participate in the program and help their fellow students by

40 Employment Services
Types Of Employment
UNT offers two types of student on campus employment: Regular Hourly or College Work
Study jobs.
Regular Hourly positions are open to all UNT students. Students do not have to qualify for
financial aid to apply for these positions. Students who want to apply for these jobs will need
to prepare a resume and cover letter for the department(s). Student Employment & Career
Services has sample resumes and cover letters for on campus positions. The samples are
available at the Student Employment & Career Services offices (University Union, Suite
320) or through the online registration system. The office also offers resume workshops on a
regular basis.
A student who receives a College Work Study Awards through the Financial Aid Office may
apply for a College Work Study position. Qualified students must submit a resume and cover
letter to the department offering the position.
Applying for an On-Campus Job
There are two ways to apply for on-campus job. Students must either bring their UNT ID to
the Student Employment & Career Services office (University Union, Suite 320) or email
their name, birth date, and last four digits of their social security number to
cocmail@dsa.admin.unt.edu to have their enrollment verified. Student Employment Services
lists on campus employment openings ranging from research, to clerical, to custodial work,
on an online job listing system. Students must set up their profile and upload a resume into
the online system in order to apply for positions.
Departments at UNT make a special effort to hire currently enrolled students. More than
7,000 students are employed on campus. On-campus positions are generally in the clerical,
custodial, computer, and food service areas. Departments offering employment will
frequently arrange a student’s work schedule around their class schedule; however, students
should try to schedule classes to accommodate a consistent work schedule. Creating blocks
of time for work, such as 8:00 a.m. to12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., is best, since
many departments prefer students to work for a minimum three-hour block of time.
Employment Services 41
Establishing Work Hours
A student employee who is listed as Regular Hourly may work no more than 30 hours per
week during regular times of enrollment. Both US citizens and non-resident aliens may work
up to 40 hours per wee k between periods of regular enrollment (semester breaks or during
the summer months). The College Work Study award normally accommodates a 20 hour
work week; however, a College Work Study student can arrange with the employing
department to work up to 30 hours per week.
Career Services
Career Services helps current and former UNT students seek full-time employment following
graduation or certification. Career Services serves as a liaison between students and
employers representing education, business, industry, government, and public service who
seek to fulfill personnel needs. Services provided include:



Resume workshop
Employer mock interview
Dress for success
Cooperative Education and Internships
Cooperative Education (Co-op) combines classroom study with planned and supervised work
experience. The program’s purpose is to give students a broader educational experience with
the added benefit of a payment for their work. The work is designed to further individual
careers after graduation.
Employers who hire students strive to offer challenging internships which complement
classroom studies. Co-op students usually return to the classroom with greater determination
to complete their degrees and to make even better grades. They realize the importance of the
college degree to advance in the career field they have chosen. Employers who offer
internships encourage students to complete their education and students must continue
working toward a degree to retain their internship position.
