www.henryghodge.com ASEL BRONSON HODGE (1825-1898) Asel Bronson “Asa” Hodge, the youngest child of William and Nancy (Dancy) Hodge, was born January 18, 1825 in Livingston County. His father died the following year and he was reared by his mother Nancy on the family farm bordering Claylick Creek in what is now present day Crittenden County. It seems from early records, that are in possession of the complier, that Nancy’s brother-in-laws Robert Hodge Sr., Thomas Hodge, John Berry and nephews Robert Hodge Jr. and Josiah Bryant Hodge were instrumental in attempting to help her to settle her husband’s estate and raising the children, but it would not be until 1830 when the estate was finally settled by her son-in-law Robert White. On March 2, 1840 Nancy Hodge conveyed 97 acres of the Claylick Creek farm to her youngest son. He didn’t take possession of this conveyance until just prior to his 22nd birthday on January 14, 1847. Asa Bronson and Catherine Elizabeth (Millikan) Hodge On February 16 of the following year he married Catherine Elizabeth Millikan in Crittenden County. The marriage was solemnized by D.W. Carter who was justice of the peace. Catherine was the daughter of Solomon and Nancy (Morgan) Millikan who had 1 www.henryghodge.com migrated to Crittenden County from Grainger County, Tennessee and settled near Claylick Creek. Asa and Catherine had nine children: Nancy Josephine married William Cullen Tyner; John Dancy married Mariah Elizabeth Durham; Oscar Turner married Mary Elizabeth Brasher; Cornelia Edgar drowned at age 22 unmarried; Amanda P. died of whooping cough at age 16 months; Juliet W. married Charles Webster Fox; Robert Long married 1st Ella Seargent in 1884 and moved to Arkansas. His 2nd marriage was to a Mary C. (last name unknown); Cora G. married Daniel Norton Riley; the youngest child, Lula K., died when she was young. Asa served in the Crittenden County Militia (Home Guard) during the Civil War with his brother John and first cousin Singleton Sinclair Hodge. It is believed that these men may have fought at the small skirmish at Salem in 1864. The Hodge family was slave owners and sympathized with the southern guerilla movement during the Union occupation of Livingston and Crittenden Counties. Asa’s older brother William Carroll would serve briefly in the Confederate Army in Texas, but because of his age he was mustered out and returned home. Asa’s former brother-in-law Rev. James Ramer served in the Union Army as a Chaplain and drowned in the Ohio River during the Battle of Paducah. The family suffered, like many others, from the effects of the war and the occupation by the Union army. Asa and his brother John live and farmed on their land along Claylick Creek their entire life. The brother’s came into a small fortune during the heyday of the Fluorspar Mining Industry in Crittenden County in the late Nineteenth Century. Asa’s son John Dancy’s will which was written in 1924 and witnessed by his brother Oscar Turner; consisted of eleven pages and dealt mostly with his contract he had with the Federal Fluorspar Company. The Hodge and Ibbey Hodge Mines were legacies from these bygone days. Asa’s wife Catherine died before Christmas of 1889 and he ten years later. They both are buried near Catherine’s father, Solomon Millikan, at the Wring-Grimes Cemetery which is on the Southside of Kirk Bluff and overlooks the Claylick Creek which meanders its way to the Cumberland River. June 8, 1928 When the immortal being of Josephine Hodge Tyner, passed thru the portals of Eternity there was lost to those from whom she was taken a companion and friend of rarest quality. She unconsciously imparted to all who knew her a guiding influence toward those qualities that make life worth in its highest value. She was golden in her friendships, always responsive to those who needed the communion of a fraternal heart, radiating wholesome fellowship and Christian spirit, and possessed of character fiber that made her outstanding as a mother and a woman. Josephine Hodge Tyner was the daughter of Catherine and Ansel [sic] Hodge, was born May 5th, 1849 and was married to William C. Tyner Feb. 16 th, 1868. She united with the Methodist Church at Tyner's Chapel in 1879 and as long as her health permitted was actively engaged in church and social work. She spent her entire life in Crittenden County, with the exception of the past few years which were lived with her son, Jesse, at Fredonia. Mrs. Tyner was widely known and loved by all w ho knew her. She was buried beside the remains of her husband at Tyner's Chapel cemetery there to await the resurrection. Surviving her are one brother, Turner Hodge; three children, Blanch T. Kinsolving, Felix E. and Jesse H. Tyner, twelve grandchildren, four great grand children and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tyner died on the 27th day of May 1928 at 11:37 A.M. at the age of 79 years and 22 days. Funeral services were conducted at Rev. B. M. Currie, of Marion. ---------The Crittenden Press (Marion, Ky.) April 21, 1922 Found Dead William C. Tyner, one of the county’s best known and respected citizens, was found dead in his orchard near his home on Thursday April 13th. He had been in poor health for several months but was able to walk about his farm and it is thought by his family that a stroke of apoplexy was the cause of his death. Mr. Tyner was 78 years old and for many years had lived on his farm in the western part of the county, near the Livingston county line. He was a good citizen and splendid neighbor and his name was a synonym for honesty and hospitality. He was a life-long member of the Methodist church. Funeral services were held Friday conducted by Rev. W.H. Archie, of Earlington, after which the remains were laid to rest in Tyner’s Chapel cemetery. Mr. Tyner is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons: Mrs. Geo. Kinsolving and Felix and Jesse Tyner of this county. * Obits of William C. May 13, 1909 OSCAR POGUE DEAD Charles Oscar Pogue, of Frances, Ky., born, Nov. 7 th. 1878, departed this life, May 6th. 1909, aged thirty years and six months. He was married to Edith Hodge, Oct. 1904, who with two little daughters survive him. He was a member of the Presbyterian church U.S.A. at Frances, having made a profession of religion in 1901. His pastor, Rev. A.J. Thompson, conducted the church funeral service, in a most beautiful and impressive sermon. His remains were followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of people and laid to rest by his masonic brethern, after a beautiful funeral service rendered by C.W. Fox, Master of Liberty Lodge No. 580, assisted by Bro. P.K. Cooksey and T.C. Campbell, of Dycusburg Lodge No. 323. He was a victim of that dreadful malady, consumption, and during all the dreary weeks of his confinement, he displayed heroic christian fortitude, even into the face of death he smiled sweetly, and passed into the presence of his savior, as the babe falls to sleep in the arms of its mother. His family he consigned to the care of providence relation and the brethern of the mystic til, early in his sickness, and thereafter seemed to be concerned for the spirtual wellfare of his friends. He was zealous Sunday School worker and an ardent believer in the principles of the F.E. and C.U. and in both these works his services will be missed. A useful life has ebbed out in the early morning. Issue: a. MARIAH ESTELLE POGUE, b. Jul. 22, 1905, Frances, Crittenden Co. Ky.; d. Sept. 20, 1952, Jefferson Co., Ky.; bur. Love Cem., Crittenden Co.
