The 4th Edition of International Ex Libris Triennial „Ioan Slavici” Arad 2007
Fixing one of the greatest Romanian writers, which is Ioan Slavici, in the universal cultural memory and
the choice of Arad as the host of th eInternational Ex Libris Triennial „Ioan Slavici” during the writer’s
aniversal date, are the origins of the idea. A second section on the theme „Without Frontiers” is
introduced starting with the 4th edition.
The international Ex Libris triennial „Ioan Slavici” wishes to mediatethe name of the Romanian writer
Ioan Slavici, born on January 18th 1848 in this region, throughout the world.
Who is Ioan Slavici? – may the artist from other corners of Europe or of the world ask himself. Why is
his memory precious to the organizers? Why has his name become an emblematical text for a triennial?
We answer all by saying that without Ioan Slavici the Romanian literature wouldn’t have been as
complex, profound and beautiful as it is today.
The world of the people from the plains, invented by Ioan Slavici, is the Romanian equivalent for the
American south depicted by Faulkner or the vigorous and colourful Latin American world of Marquez.
Like any open work, a re-lecture of this classic reveals new possible discourses. Beyond the rural
paradisiacal universe, the topos of the plain can get an infernal one, within which the violent
desacralisation of a world crushed by sin, takes place. For this talent, Ioan Slavici deserves your
creating effort, imagination and artistic generosity supposed by this challeneg, because creation will
always be a pretext to creation.
Terms of participation
1. Joining the exhibition is free. Every interested artist may submit up to 2 works for each sections.
The works have to be created between 2005-2006. All graphic techniques are accepted. The
size of the works should not exceed 10 x 15 cm. of the graphic and 21 x 29,7 cm. of the
support. Ex-Libris entries must not be framed or mounted, nor affixed to another piece of paper,
card or any other material.
2. Only authentic, printed ex-libris made for the books or for the library of a living, private individual
or for the books of an existing institution or organization will be considered. The textual part of
the ex-libris must contain the name of the owner and a reference to his or her book collection.
This can be done by incorporating into the ex-libris the words “ex libris”, “book belonging to ...”,
“from the library of …” or some other original reference to ownership, followed by the name of
the owner of the books in full.
This textual part must be successfully integrated into the illustration or decoration or must form
part of it visually and it must relate to the subject matter.
3. Each work have to wear the necessary annotations (on recto: name of the artist, title, technique,
number of the copy, year of creation; on reverse: name of the artist and the exact address)
4. For the catalogue, the artists shall submit a short curriculum vitae and a completed entry form in
Latin script, capital letter in English, French, Spanish or German.
5. Entries must arrive at the following address before November 1st 2006:

6. All accepted entries will become the property of the Arad Art Museum’s collection. Entrants
must bear all costs relating to the submission of their work. Entries will not be returned and
participants cannot lay claim to payment or any type of fee for their ex-libris. Unaccepted works
will be returned to the artists on the organizer’s expences.
7. By their participation in the exhibition, the artists accept the rules and conditions and agree to
abide by the jury’s decisions.
8. Please put your works between the strong cardboards for no damage. Please write on package
“ No Commercial Value” & “ Only For Art Exhibition”. We are not responsible for the damage or
loss of works during transportation and shipping.
9. All selected participants, represented in the exhibition, will receive a catalogue and a certificate
of particitation for free.
10. By selecting an ex-libris in the exhibition, the artist agree to that ex-libris being reproduced in
catalogues, non-commercial literature and specialist publications and accept that they have no
claim to any form of payment for this.

Other Informations
The exhibition shall be opened on January 24th 2007, at 17.00 hours, at the Art Museum Arad
(Gheorghe Popa de Teius Street 2-4, 2nd floor, Arad)
During the year 2007, the works will be exhibited, due to the obligations assumed by the curator, in
the cities of Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca.
