o Students will work together in small-groups exploring ecology and water resources from southern
Arizona to eastern Utah. The program includes a 5 day rafting trip down the Green River's
Desolation Canyon in Central Utah. Students will be immersed in the ecology of the Sonoran
Desert at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum where they will have the chance to interact with
live animals and learn about the unique qualities of the Sonoran Desert. As the students travel
north from Tucson to Moab Utah, they will explore several distinct ecosystems. Along the way
they will visit Canyon De Chelly National Monument, Monument Valley, and the Glen Canyon Dam.
Upon their return to Tucson, students will have the opportunity to utilize the resources of the
University of Arizona where they will assimilate their newly acquired knowledge.

o A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 is desired (A=4.0).
o Earn up to six units of transferable college credit in five weeks.
o Live away from home in a residence hall with 50-75 other students.
o Participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities.
o Receive support from staff of peer advisors and coordinators.
o Learn strategies for a successful transition to college life.
o Meet new friends from Arizona and all over the country.
o Gain independence and self-knowledge.
A limited number of scholarships are available to qualified students. Eligibility is based
solely on financial need. State funds cannot be used to pay for personal expenses;
therefore, no scholarship award will cover the entire cost of SOE attendance.
Scholarships are available to cover all or part tuition for a three unit course. At this
time, no scholarships are available to cover housing costs.

o Med-Start is a summer academic enrichment program for any 11th grade Arizona high school
student interested in a health career. Students participate in the program during the summer
between their junior and senior years. Med-Start helps young people prepare for their future in
the health professions by exploring career opportunities and providing college level coursework in
English and science.

o The Fleischer Scholars Program is a comprehensive residential experience at ASU for select
underrepresented and economically disadvantaged Arizona high school students interested in
business careers. The program prepares participants for success in business studies and careers,
creating an entrepreneurial spirit in future business majors.

 ASU National Summer Transportation Institute
o Spend three weeks, May 31-June 17 (excluding weekends), living on the ASU Tempe Campus and
learn how all engineering fields impact our systems of transportation around the state.

• tour locations and traffic systems not normally accessible to the general public
• meet with professional engineers from around the state
• learn what engineers do to make our transportation system work effectively and safely
