On June 5, 1981 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put out a report for a strange case of pneumonia affecting five homosexual men. This was later determined as GRID. (Gay-related immune deficiency) Then, the CDC reported evidence that it could be spread through heterosexual sex, blood, and bodily fluids.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) would be the final name and was the start of a world wide epidemic. During the early 1980’s, AIDS shifted America’s lifestyle so that people were suddenly looked at with discrimination and society had to put forth a lot of money and research to his new mysterious disease. (Key Events in the

AIDS epidemic, 1)

II.

Economic Impact- Society had to put forth a lot of money and research to this new mysterious disease a.

In the beginning, a lot of the news media ignored AIDS until the research began and later was discovered in 1982 that it could occur in anyone, that’s when they realized that there needed to be a lot of time spent on this disease (Salyer, 2) i.

“Dr. Robert Gallo, U.S. researcher claims he discovered the virus that causes AIDS; however, this is about a year after the French discovery. It will be 1991 before Gallo admits the French scientist sent him the blood sample from which he derived HIV and developed a blood test to detect its presence.” ( Salyer, 2)

“Time suggests that Ho’s ‘cocktail’ of antiviral drugs—costing as much as $20,000 a year—‘might, just might, lead to cure’.”

(Salyer, 4)

2.

“But when you get down to individual policies, insurance companies want to test for the virus, and if the tests turn up positive, then you’ve got hard choices to make whether to accept someone for coverage” (Morgan, 2).

3.

“1987 US Food and Drug administration approves the use of a new drug AZT to treat AIDS”. (Key Events in the AIDS epidemic, 1). ii.

American households dealing with AIDS in the family discover that they loose a lot once they encounter something like this. If the person in their family is the main source of the income they are suddenly faced with the loss of their income. Also, to pay off the medical costs they have to experience letting go a lot of their possessions to help cover it (Impact on Households, 1) iii.

August 9, 1994, the FDA approves an AZY regimen for pregnant women. This showed a reduce in the transmission of HIV to unborn children (Key Events in the AIDS epidemic, 2). iv.

In 2001, The United Nations began a special session dedicated to AIDS.

It called for funding the disease to reach $7 billion and $10 billion a year by 2005 (Key Events in the AIDS epidemic, 2) b.

A large economic impact was the costs of health care because of the pandemic.

i.

“Economic impacts of the pandemic include direct health care costs which are estimated at more than US $11 billion worldwide in 1993.”

(Leone,12) ii.

“Thus we note that during 1992 80 percent of HIV infected people lived in developing countries while 95 % of the 7$ billion spent on AIDS education care and research was expended in the industrialized world.”

(Leone, 20.)

III.

AIDS shifted America’s lifestyle so that people were suddenly looked at with discrimination a.

Another way to help the decrease of AIDS is some public health experts promoted safe-sex education. They also provided a condom distribution and programs in schools (Leone, 6). i.

“AIDS prevention strategists also seek to reduce the risk associated with intravenous drugs use” (Leone, 7) ii.

Some Public Health experts believe that by having sex education in schools it will develop sexual values and make teens responsible and have the ability to make more informed and intelligent decisions regarding sex. (Leone, 6). b.

Some people didn’t know the difference between AIDS and HIV, HIV was a tiny virus that gets into the body and changed the way some things work. HIV is what caused AIDS. ( Draimin pg 10) i.

People started noticing that everyone could contract this disease after a lot of famous people were found to be positive. Ryan White, Magic

Johnson, and Robert Reed from “The Brady Bunch” were just a few of them. (Salyer 3) ii.

Olympic diver and gold medalist Greg Louganis was also HIV positive.

In 1988 during the preliminaries of the springboard competition he hit his head on the diving board performing. He began bleed and the media tried to say that it’s a possible route of transmission which it wasn’t.
