Short Answer Questions: Write your complete thoughts concerning the following
statements. CHOOSE ONLY TWO.
1. Explain what events led James Oglethorpe to propose the creation of Georgia. What kind of colonist did
he want to bring to Georgia? What types of colonists actually came to the new colony? Be sure to include
Oglethorpe’s work in England prior to the settlement of Georgia.
2. Give evidence to support this statement: “In allowing the English colonists to settle Yamacraw Bluff,
Tomochichi was thinking about the well-being of his people.” Explain fully how the settlers and the Native
Americans benefited from this venture.
3. Who were the “Clamourous Malcontents?” List three trustee regulations that caused discontentment
among the settlers. How did these regulations put James Oglethorpe in a bad situation as far as enforcing
these regulations?
4. Explain your reasons for believing the Trustees were or were not successful in developing a model
society in Georgia. Give concrete evidence, things that were or were not done. Include social and political
aspects of the model colony when giving your answer.
5. How was being a slave different from being an indentured servant? How was it similar? Be sure to
include social and ethnic diversity as well as the reasoning behind both institutions.
