Preliminary Exercise Evaluation Pre-filming: 1. Describe the sequence of shots that you agreed to shoot? In our preliminary exercise we thought about appropriate shots that would fit the sequence. We thought about the use of match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule which we added in our sequence. In our sequence we used mostly wide shots, close ups, tracking shot, match on action, shot reverse shot and we stuck to the 180 degree rule. We agreed to use these shots because they made a well continuity edited sequence. 2. What was the purpose of the sequence? The purpose of the sequence is to create a short piece of different shots of a person walking and going in to a room and having a conversation with another person. The sequence had to have a variety of shots in it which would then be edited to create one smooth edited sequence. We filmed this sequence of the actor walking through a door, walking down the corridor and walking in to another room which is where the conversation took place. Filming: 3. Were there any differences between your filmed shots and your original plan or storyboard? Our filmed shots followed the storyboard well, when we filmed our shots they were shot exactly how we described in the storyboard. There were not any differences in our filmed shots and our original storyboard, apart from some of the shots were cut out, this was because we felt as a group that the shots didn’t seem to fit well in the sequence. An example of this was we shot 4. What additional shots did you film that were not in the original idea or storyboard? We didn’t film any shots that were not used in our storyboard; we stuck to the storyboard that we originally designed. Editing: As a group we decided what roles we were going to take on when filming, we chose effectively and we worked well as a group. In our group we had a director, cameraman and an actor. My role in the group was the actor, the most difficult part of this was to keep the continuity throughout the film, this is important because if the continuity is wrong it will confuse the audience and the sequence will seem jumpy and won’t be one smooth movement. As a group we worked well and listened to each other’s ideas and thoughts on how to shoot this opening title sequence. In the edit suite we transferred our film on to the computer to start editing. Once the film had loaded on to the computer we started to review the shots that we took. The first shot we took was the actor walking through a door and down the corridor. We watched this and then decided what bit we wanted to cut out of that shot to use for our sequence, we did this for each shot to make sure they all came together at the end to make one smooth continuity edited scene. This worked well and our shots that we used created a good sequence. We achieved to use match on action in our sequence, we achieved this by filming the actor opening the door and then the next shot was filming the person walk in to the room, it is hard to realise the cut because the audience is concentrating on the action that is happening. In our sequence we also achieved shot reverse shot, we did this when the two actors were having a conversation, the camera would be on one actors face but then when the other person started talking it would reverse back to them, this worked well in our sequence. Lastly we kept the 180 degree rule by making sure the camera didn’t jump from one side of the actor to the other side, if this happens it creates confusion within the audience. It was important that we kept this rule whilst filming the conversation because otherwise it looks like the two people aren’t having a conversation with one another. However once in the editing suite we realised that in some of our shots that people walked past the camera whilst filming, this was the only problem that occurred but we worked around this and had to cut out that part of the shots. Once we had edited the shots together we discussed what music we thought would link together with the sequence, using the idea of ‘Thriller’ we used music that was dark and mysterious. 5. What shots did you have to cut out and why? Give examples In our sequence we shot a POV shot, when we were in the editing suite we saw that the shot of this was out of focus therefore we could not use it in our sequence and had to cut it out. The POV shot was of the actor walking through the corridor, we did this to show the audience what the actor was focusing on. Unfortunately we had to cut this shot out.
