Students will identify renowned sociologists and their theories.
Students will understand the basic sociological theoretical paradigms which guide thinking
and research in this discipline.
Students will apply these frameworks (paradigms) to the subject of sports.

1. What are the basic terms of the discipline of Sociology and how are they used?
2. Who are the most well known sociologists and what are their theories?
3. Why are there three basic theoretical paradigms in sociology and how do they guide
sociological thinking and research?
4. How can a familiar part of everyday life, such as sports, be viewed through each of
the three theoretical paradigms?

Students will write a five-paragraph essay about themselves.
Students will write a paper describing the three theoretical paradigms. They will
choose their favorite and justify that choice.
Students will have a test on the first unit’s material.
Students will work in groups to complete a task, later discussing how group
dynamics worked.
Students will discuss in class the material they have read in the text. They will
adjust their notes (self-prepared) accordingly.
Students will demonstrate proficiency in public speaking through a current events
oral presentation.
Notes or Comments:
Sociology is taught in a manner similar to a college course. Students use a college text.
