Objectives: o Summarize, recall and make prediction to show reading comprehension o Ask open-ended questions to guide discussion

Procedures:

Word of the Day/Daily Edit

 SSR (10 minutes)

 Review Daily Edit (5 minutes)

Summarizing and recall – What happened in the book last week? Where did we leave off? (5 minutes)

Predicting – Make predictions about what you think will happen to the characters next.

(5 minutes)

Introduction to asking open-ended questions. (10 minutes)

Paired reading. Each group is responsible for reading through Ch. 115 and coming up with 5 questions for discussion. They need to write the following: o 2 recall or summarizing questions o 3 questions that require inference or supporting opinions with details.

If students finish the reading and constructing their questions before the end of the block, we will use the questions to facilitate discussion. If we do not have time, we will use the questions for discussion at the start of class on Tuesday.

Objectives: o Review concepts for the Maximum Ride Test

Procedures: o Daily Edit/WOD/Silent Reading o Finish reading Maximum Ride if chapters remain from Tuesday. o Play game to review key literary terms. o Review the parts of plot, subplot, characters, etc.

Here are the terms and concepts we will be reviewing:

Plot – Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution

Subplot

Figurative Language – idiom, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, allusion

Theme

Mood & Tone

Characters –flat/round/static/dynamic

Procedures: o Maximum Ride test for the first half of class o Second half of class: o Brief lecture on what is a research paper. Students will complete a concept map. o Complete “What’s Great About Me?” o Think-Pair-Share – If money were no object, what would you like to do all day?

Procedures: o We will be going to the computer lab to conduct preliminary research on the internet.

Students will need to do preliminary research on 3 different topics and choose one, identifying appropriate sources that you might use to conduct the research.

Objectives: o Identifying information needs. o Compose open-ended questions to guide research o Take effective notes – paraphrasing and documenting direct quotes using MLA format

Procedures: o Word of the Day/DOL o SSR o Identifying Information Needs Reading Exercise o Brainstorm open-ended questions as a class in general. o Create career-specific open-ended questions, then meet with other students who are writing about the same field to see if there are any other open-ended questions you might want to ask o Note-taking How-To: Paraphrasing, direct quotes, and using MLA format. o Evaluating Sources & Exit Ticket
