Student Practicum General Guidelines The Practicum is a hands-on, experiential 300-hour course whereby the students undergo Practicum training in a Corporation that will expose them to tasks, work situations and environment related to their chosen major and to develop the necessary competencies and skills needed in their chosen fields. This course is a requirement for the following majors: Business Economics Financial Management Human Resource Development Management Marketing Management Qualifications The following students are eligible to undergo student internship/practicum: 1. Regular students – 4th year standing 2. Irregular students - only those with a maximum of 6 units deficiencies will be allowed to take the practicum (however, there must be a conditional clause regarding the extension of the practicum period) Procedures 1. PRACTICUM ORIENTATION will be conducted at least, two months before the Practicum Period 2. Students are encouraged to take the initiative in identifying companies/institutions/organizations who will accept them as trainees after completion of third year courses. Selection of companies should meet the criteria set by the college and approval is still subject to the approval of the Practicum Coordinator. 3. The department will release the list of students who meet the requirements for practicum. 4. The student should prepare a File Folder/Clear Book (color coded) which will be submitted to the Practicum Adviser, assigned to him/her at the end of the Practicum Period. Procedure for Practicum Application and Company Accreditation 5.1 5.2 The student selects the company for his practicum. The Letter of Endorsement that will be used in applying for practicum is available in template form 5.3 If a separate Application form is required by the company, the form should be accomplished for the purpose. 5.4 Attach Transcript of Records as proof of completion of the required number of units to the Practicum Coordinator, Acceptance Letter and the Waivers signed by student and the parents (with photocopy of valid ID). Submit the same to the Practicum Office in duplicate and placed inside 2 separate brown envelopes which must be properly labeled (Original or Photocopy and indicating Names, Section, Room Number, Class days, Cellphone or Landline number). These must be submitted before the start of the Practicum Period or within 10 days after the start of OJT. 5.5 The Practicum Coordinator together with the Department Chair will approve the application. 6. A list of students with their designated practicum advisers will be posted or students will receive a text or phone call from said practicum advisers. 7. Completion of 300 hours requirement with satisfactory rating from the immediate on-site supervisor and faculty adviser. A daily journal will be required from the students to account their activities and learnings. A. Students should write their journal daily – penalty will be imposed for late submissions. For 300 hours practicum, reporting 8 hours a day, this translates to 37.5 working days; reporting 4 hours a day, this translates to 75 working days. B. Standard format for the Practicum Journal will be followed (paragraph form so as to develop further the students’ communication skills; outline is provided as guide in writing journal/reflections) C. Summary Report - The following items must be answered by the student upon completion of the 300 hours requirement (to be submitted 2 weeks after their last practicum schedule) a. process of finding the practicum placement b. working in the organization/company c. work schedule d. most memorable practicum moment e. difficulties encountered and solutions made (Format for item summary report: times new roman, font size- 12, spacing -1.5, 1 inch margin on all sides, maximum of 3 pages) Practicum Period Summer Practicum shall be completed during the summer session, April to May, Monday to Friday, no more than 8 hours per day for a total of 300 hours. Practicum course will be credited 1st semester, immediately following the Summer OJT Program. Second Semester Practicum shall be completed November to February and will be credited in the same semester. Number of OJT hours may vary depending on the student’s class schedule; this, however, should not be more than 8 hours per day. Selection of Company for Practicum The Practicum Coordinator will be responsible for selecting the Company/Institution where the students will be trained for their Practicum; however, students can search for their company for practicum but subject to the approval of the Practicum Coordinator, and in accordance with the following guidelines on the selection of institutions. In addition, the selected companies should meet the following criteria: Registered as a Corporation Among the top 2,000 corporations in the Philippines officially registered with the SEC. No history or track record of fraud, deception, or illegal business activities In good standing with government regulatory agencies Students are not allowed to have their Practicum with their family-owned enterprise or, if with an independent company, not be under the direct supervision of parents and relatives up to the 3rd degree of consanguinity and affinity who work for the firm. Matching of Student with Partner-Institutions The Student should notify the practicum office soonest if they are unable to find a qualified Company for Practicum. Accordingly, the Practicum coordinator will try to match the students with partner-institutions of UST for the Practicum course, on a besteffort basis, depending on the availability of slots. In case the number of slots are insufficient to cover the number of students applying for matching, those with higher general weighted averages will be given priority. Uniform During the Practicum Period, the Student shall be required to wear the prescribed Practicum uniform to be determined by the practicum office, or Business Attire if required by the partnerinstitution, as the case may be. Implementing Guidelines on Practicum and Office Decorum Students are expected to conduct themselves in a highly professional manner in accordance with the values of the University. They are required to follow the specific guidelines enumerated in the “Student’s Guide for Practicum”, CMO No. 23 Series of 2009; this may be secured from the Practicum Coordinator, upon request. Course Requirements The Students are required to complete the course hour requirements, equivalent to 300 hours, obtain a satisfactory rating from the supervisor/manager/HR Head and the Faculty Coordinator, and attend the school-prescribed practicum activities to pass the course. The rating instrument shall be developed by the Practicum Coordinator and will be the instrument used by the supervisor in assessing the performance of the Practicumer for purposes of course grading. The school-prescribed practicum activities which students are required to attend are as follows:: Pre-Practicum Orientation, where the final instructions, guidelines and requirements of the Practicum course will be given by the Practicum Coordinator as well as the supervising Practicum Mentors. Interim Assessment, where the students will provide the Faculty Adviser with feedback related to their work environment, duties and responsibilities, and other work-related concerns. Post-Practicum Meeting where the Practicum Mentors and the Practicumers will provide a summation of the learnings. It will also provide the students a forum to share insights and experiences acquired during the Practicum. The Grades of the Students will be computed based on the following: o Supervisor’s Rating – 50% o Journal – 40% o Faculty Adviser’s Rating – 10% 100% Others: The Practicum office will be issuing additional guidelines before and during the Practicum period to ensure the efficient implementation of the Program.
