Continuing Education for Transcriptionists
Given the absence of a recognized body in Canada, ongoing educational opportunities for
Transcription are limited. However, AHDI (The Association for Healthcare Documentation
Integrity) "is the world’s largest organization working to advance health data capture and
documentation by setting standards for education and practice in the field of medical
transcription/editing".
Canadian MTs are encouraged to continue their education by enrolling in online courses and
professional development opportunities. MTs with less than 2 years experience may apply
to write the RMT (Registered Medical Transcriptionist) exam, and MTs with more than two
years experience may apply to write the CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist) exam.
Individuals who pass the exams are recognized and therefore able to use the respective
designation (RMT or CMT). Credentials are valid for 3 years and renewal of credentials is
done by paying a renewal fee and completing an online course and exam.
