Required Text: Understanding Elementary Algebra Second Edition by Feneis, Grone,
Henderson, Lenk, Rickert and Scott. There is a Solutions Manual, which is recommended
but not required.
Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives: This course will cover operations and algebraic
quantities, solutions of linear equations and inequalities, application problems, graphing
linear equations and inequalities, solving systems of equations, and operations with
polynomials.
General Education Goals: This course will meet General Education Goal #1 to develop the
ability to become an independent thinker through mathematical, scientific, and philosophical
reasoning, and Goal #3 to develop the ability to solve problems by collecting, organizing and
evaluating information.
Course Standards:
Calculators: Calculators will not be permitted during the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 tests.
Multiplication tables will be available for these tests. A basic calculator will be permitted for
the remainder of the course.
Technology: There will be homework exercises assigned in MathXL, a web based learning
system. You will be given an access code to the course in MathXL on the first day of class at
no additional cost. The MathXL homework is mandatory, and it will count as one test grade.
If you do not have internet access at home, you can use the Math Computer Lab in R135 or
any open lab on campus to work on the homework.
Homework: Homework from the textbook will be assigned each class period and is due the
next class period. The homework will also be posted in Ocean Cruiser in the Assignments
section. Be prepared to ask any questions you have about the assignment when you come to
the next class.
Cell Phones: Please turn off all cell phones while in the classroom. There will be no
answering calls or text messaging during class. Cell phones will not be permitted on your
desk during tests. (You cannot use them as a calculator.)
Statement about Civility: Students will be expected to abide by all rules and regulations of
Ocean County College. Your behavior in the class affects the learning experience of others.
Any behavior or action that disturbs the learning environment will not be tolerated and
appropriate measures will be taken.
Withdrawal Policy: All withdrawals must be initiated by the student. Not attending class
does not remove a student from the roster. A grade of F is assigned to a student who stops
attending class and does not request a withdrawal. The last day to withdraw from the
course with a grade of W is Monday April 4, 2011. The signed Add/Drop form must be
submitted to the Office of Admissions and Records before the end of the business day on
April 4.
Attendance: Students should make every effort to attend class. If you are sick, please e-mail
me, call my office or the Mathematics Office. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the
notes from the missed class. You cannot make up a test if you are absent the day of the
test.
Evaluation of Students: There will be five tests and a cumulative final. Each test, including
the final, is equally weighted. The homework grade from MathXL will count as one test
grade. The lowest test grade will be dropped. The remaining six grades will be averaged for
the final grade. There is no rounding up of the grade earned. The test grades will be posted in
Ocean Cruiser. The official final grade is posted in Webadvisor at the end of the course. The
grading scale is as follows:
A : 90-100
B+ : 85-89
B : 80-84
C+ : 75-79
C : 70-74
F : below 70
Note: There is no grade of D for MATH 011 or MATH 012. It is Ocean County College
policy that you must earn a C or better to pass the course.
Campus Resources: If you are having trouble with the course material, please seek assistance
immediately. Please see me during office hours or make an appointment with me for extra
help. There is a Mathematics Tutoring Center with a professional tutor in the Russell
Building room R123. The hours are posted on the door and on the OCC web site. Professor
Feneis has created a web site for fraction review and a review of each chapter of the textbook
with PowerPoint presentation solutions guides. The web site URL is
