Short Profile of Department:
Graduate Department of EU Studies was established in 1999 with the launching
of the MA in EU Studies. Department’s activities have been extended with the
introduction of the MA Non-thesis and PhD. Currently the department offers one
of the two doctoral programmes of European Studies in Turkey. Teaching and
research staff of the different departments in the University contribute to the
interdisciplinary education and activities of the department.
Besides the mainstream postgraduate education activities, the department is also
involved in extracurricular activities such as academic workshops, conferences
and civil society-oriented education programmes with local NGOs. The Jean
Monnet European Module programme supported by the European Commission
has been active since the 2005-2006 academic year. As regards Erasmus
activities, the department has concluded a bilateral agreement with University of
Genoa, Italy.

Foundation for Economic
Development (EGEV) organised a
series of EU basic training seminars
for the representatives of industry,
civil society and local authorities in
the various cities of the region.
Department staff headed by Prof. Dr.
Canan Balkir have participated as
lecturers in this programme.
A one-week training seminar on “EU
Citizenship” was organised in 2005 in
collaboration with the Union of Izmir
Women’s Associations.
Department of EU Studies and
Aegean Region Chamber of Industry
(EBSO) have jointly organised a
project contest on EU awareness for
the secondary education.

The Jean Monnet Module Project on
the Politics and Institutions of an
Enlarging EU (project nr. 20052177/001-001 JMO JMO). Co-funded
by the European Commission. The
project involves 10-week courses on
various aspects of the EU, the first of
which has been completed during the
spring semester of the academic year
2005-2006. The project will last for 5
years.
“Knowledge Through Business,
Business Through Knowledge”, in
collaboration with Marmaris Chamber
of Commerce and to be funded by the
European Commission. The project
foresees establishment of a SME
development centre. Although
implementation of the project is open
ended, duration of its first phase will
last around two years.
"New Youth with the EU", Project
proposed under the call for proposal
"Broadcasting Europe", in
collaboration with EGE TV (regional
TV station). Programmes focusing on
EU issues focusing on the youth will
be broadcasted,. Duration of the
project is 10 months.
“The Economic and Social Impact of
International Retirement Migration:
An Empirical Research on Antalya
and Its Districts” is funded by
TUBITAK (National Scientific and
Technological Research Council of
Turkey). It is a two year project and
examines the international retirement
migration from the EU countries to
Turkey and discusses the socioeconomic effects for the host local
community.
