Assessment of Chemistry 101 and 101E Spring 2008/2009 Semester This semester, 1247 students (KIM 101 - 795 students and KIM 101E - 452 students) from various departments took the course in 18 parallel sections. The grading scheme is: 1st Midterm 25%, 2nd Midterm 25%, Final exam 50%. In Table 1 and 2, KIM 101 and KIM 101E courses were compared. The tables show the average grades for each midterm and final exams of Chemistry KIM 101 and KIM 101E in 2008/2009 Spring Semester. And comparing to the previous semesters (last two years –given in Table 3 and Table 4), this semester averages are one of the best ones for both sections. Table 3. And another continual problem from the instructors, having more than one section per a week. This problem causes some difficulties during teaching and correcting exam papers. There is a need to have more instructors for these courses. Because of this problem, the students didn’t have any homework this semester. Having a limited number of laboratories is still an important problem for KIM 101L and KIM 101EL sections waiting to be solved. Before the final exam, all the KIM 101 and KIM 101E students were given a questionnaire (1247 students) and they were asked to evaluate the course and the instructor. But only 895 students answered this questionnaire. The questions and the average grade of each question are as follows (Points are over 5.0): 1. I spent enough effort to learn the course 3.43 2. The text book and the supplementary books advised were sufficient 3.23 3. The instructors can be reached easily during their meeting hours 3.37 4. The instructor was successful to follow the syllabus during the semester 3.59 5. Instructor’s efforts to make the course attractive were satisfactory 3.19 6. Instructor was prepared before coming to class 3.55 7. Instructor efficiently used the board and the other technologies 3.38 8. Instructor encouraged students to use library and computer 2.86 9. Instructor encouraged students to ask questions 3.21 10. Instructor encouraged students to active participation in the class 3.26 11. Instructor answered the questions very clearly 3.43 12. Homework assignments were useful in understanding the course 2.62 13. Exam questions were satisfactory to check my chemistry knowledge 2.99 14. Exam results were consistent with my predictions 3.01 15. English sections contributed a good improvement to my English 2.71 16. Instructor used the English language very efficiently 2.98 17. Instructor spoke in English during all the course 3.05 18. The laboratory experiments were parallel to the course topics 2.60 19. Laboratory work was useful and sufficient 2.80 20. Group size in the experiments was reasonable 3.44 21. The research assistants were helpful for student’s homework 3.13 22. The research assistants can be reached easily during their meeting hours 3.22 23. The research assistants were successful in general 3.24 24. I would like to take more courses from the same instructor 3.14 25. Instructor was successful in general 3.34 Point A: B: C: D: F: Definitely agreed Agreed Not sure Not agreed Definitely not agreed 5 4 3 2 1 As seen from the questionnaire, the English language problems are still an ongoing problem. The students have to use the library more frequently. The General Chemistry laboratory experiments have to be checked and renew as soon as possible.
