REGIONAL LABORATORY SERVICES
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ANIMAL HEALTH TESTING
Regional Laboratory Services is a privately owned Australian registered business, operating since 1995. We
provide diagnostic, analytical, research and development services to private individuals, industry and
government bodies in the areas of animal health, environmental and agricultural testing. These services are
provided to clients through a quality system consistent with NATA and ISO guidelines. Reports to clients are
issued with NATA endorsement where testing in the report is consistent with our terms of NATA
accreditation.
Hours of Business The laboratory is open to the public from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. Emergency
after hours service are not normally undertaken, unless the laboratory has been notified previously. Any out of
hours service will attract a surcharge fee.
Transport of Samples Transport of samples to the laboratory is the responsibility of the client. Samples
should be packaged to IATA specifications. Unstable samples or samples requiring constant refrigeration
should not be sent on Fridays as they will not be received at the laboratory until the following Monday. To
confirm samples are received at the laboratory, we suggest that submitters notify the laboratory (eg. by
email/fax) of the transport consignment details and expected receival time. Please contact the laboratory if you
require further details.
Sample Requirements
All samples submitted to the laboratory should be individually identifiable and
accompanied by a specimen test request form. Test request/Sample Submission forms can be downloaded
from our website. General sample requirements for specific tests are indicated in the attached price list. For
most blood tests, the volume of serum or whole blood from a 7 mL blood collection tube is sufficient. For urine
testing, a 5 mL sample is usually sufficient. Urine samples should be free of faecal contamination. Tissue
samples for routine testing should be 10 - 30 g in weight and transported in 50 mL plastic screw top containers.
Tissue biopsy samples should preferably be greater than 100 mg in weight, particularly if multi-element analysis
is required. Small tissue samples should be stored and transported in a suitable size container to minimise
evaporative loss from the sample; ‘O’ ring sealed 1 mL tubes are ideal for biopsy samples. Biopsy samples
should be rinsed with saline and excess fluid/blood removed via gauze swabs prior to being placed into
sample containers; on receival at the laboratory the entire contents of the container will be assayed, as at
this stage we cannot differentiate tissue from blood/blood clots/saline. All analysis and results for biopsies
are on a wet weight basis
Reporting of Results
The laboratory aims for same day service to clients where possible. Some referred
testing (as with some feed mineral testing) or testing requiring extensive sample treatment (such as tissue iron
and selenium) may have increased turnaround times. Results for animal health testing can be emailed and / or
faxed to the submitter. Results for large submissions are also available in Excel/ASCII file format for direct
incorporation into submitters data bases. Mailed copies of results are also available.
Repeat Testing
Where results of testing are questioned by the submitter as not appearing to correlate
with the clinical condition, tests will be repeated at no additional charge. This does not apply if initial samples
are of poor quality or incorrectly submitted. Samples are held for a minimum of two weeks after testing.
Billing
Charges for each submission are listed as a footer on the results for that submission. Accounts
listing these individual submission charges are sent to clients at the end of each month, with payment due
within 14 days. We reserve the right to charge interest and accounting fees on overdue accounts and to alter
fees and charges in this price list.
