Title: Should we take all HEP experimental data at face value?
Abstract:
Generally, experimental data in reputed scientific journals go through a rigorous scrutiny even before the
refereeing process, and hence are taken at face value. Nevertheless, on some occasions, incorrect results
do slip through this review process because of serious misconceptions in understanding one or more of
the relevant issues. Sometimes these lead on to sensational claims and even to setting up new
experiments. In this talk, I will discuss a few examples in high energy physics, starting from the famous
ALEPH four-jet events to papers in the year 2013, where one can find the error(s) simply by reading the
published paper.
