ROYAL DIAMOND JUBILEE
CELEBRATIONS IN EXTON
Stamford End:
On Saturday, 2 June, the residents of Stamford End and a few of
their friends held a Street Party to celebrate the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee. Luckily the weather remained dry, although
quite cool, and almost 50 residents and their friends enjoyed a
terrific barbeque (kindly loaned by David Healey). “A great time
was had by all.” [Judith Whitworth]

HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY LITTLE ANNIE’ !
A popular figure in Exton, ever graceful and youthful, Annie Lea celebrated her
80th birthday in style with dearest “boyfriend” Nigel at the Hambleton Hall
Hotel, courtesy of their family. The village also shared the occasion with
several ‘surprise’ parties being arranged by friends.
Since moving to Exton more than 25 years ago, Annie and Nigel have carved
a niche in the life of Exton, respected and loved for their commitment to young
and old alike. For many of the young people of Exton they will be remembered
among other things for Halloween, the witches broom and treats galore at their
home in Stamford Road. Their dedication to the welfare of the community,
participation in the many fund raising events to support the village, notably the
Church Roof Fund and the Exton Street Market will be remembered by the
wider community.
More significant, however, has been Annie’s contribution to the Village
School, spanning more than twelve years, most of which as Chair of
Governors, leading the School through some very difficult times until her
retirement in 2008. Such was her contribution to the School that she was
honoured at Oakham Castle in 2008, receiving the High Sheriff’s Award for
Service to the Community. Many will remember the party thrown in her honour
by the School in May 2008 when the Lord Lieutenant, Dr.Laurence Howard
OBE, presented her with a garden bench - especially made by Andy and Mick
Mills - on behalf of the community.
To this day she works tirelessly, helping those less fortunate and providing
friendship and support for those in need. So it comes as no surprise that Exton
wanted to celebrate her life and it was very fitting that her 80thbirthday should
be applauded and recognised with an invitation to the Queen’s Garden Party
5
at Buckingham Palace on 29th May, the start of a three week marathon of
surprise parties and a very special family gathering, culminating in the wedding
of their grand-daughter in Oakham on 16th June.
Throughout her colourful and remarkable life Annie has been blessed with her
‘Rock’ beside her, supporting her from Portobello Market to Buckingham
Palace, never wavering and always cheerful. It is probably not surprising that
for us in Exton we feel we have our own ‘Royal Affair’ during this special year
of celebrations. God bless you Little Annie! [MDGB]
THANKS
On behalf of my mum, Pat Maiden, I would like to thank everyone who made
her 70th birthday party at The Fox and Hounds such a memorable occasion.
Special thanks go to Sandra, Valter and the staff for the wonderful food and
service! Mum asked for donations for the Neuro Critical Care Unit at
Addenbrookes instead of presents as without their care she wouldn’t have
been here to celebrate her birthday and for that we are extremely grateful, a
cheque for £325 has been sent. Thank you, [Bernadette Wallace]

MONTY
Much loved 5 year old Male Bengal Cat needs a new home and family.
We are moving to Australia and as much as it breaks our heart we think it
would be best to find Monty a new home in the UK. We are moving to a
large city and he has grown up in the Exton countryside all his life and we
feel city life would not be fair to him. His in good health and has been
neutered. Very playful and affectionate. He is used to having a cat flap and
the freedom to roam around the village.
If you can help us find Monty a new home please contact James & Diane
Goodman on: James: 07779703925 or Diane: 07947644121 – Thank you.
EXTON MAY FAIR MAY 27th
The sun shone all day, the setting was perfect in the Fox and Hounds paddock and a
successful day was enjoyed by many villagers and visitors. Sandra and Valter very
kindly let us use their grounds, basically to promote the work of the Cinnamon Trust.
This is a national charity caring for elderly and terminally ill patients who become
anxious about the care and future of their pets – often their sole companions.
Volunteers help by exercising pets, attending veterinary appointments when necessary,
fostering pets whilst the patient young or old has to attend hospital or care and giving
support and reassurance to the human as well as the pet, be it dog, cat, bird, fish, goat,
horse – we are there to help. The Cinammon Trust never puts to sleep any beloved
pets and rehomes whenever possible, or allows the pet to end its days in one of its
sanctuaries – for more information go to www.cinnamon.org.uk. Other villagers took
advantage of stall space as well as David’s Fuschias and other traders who reported a
good day. Pub food was available all day and the hog roast was very popular with all
ages. The Cinnamon Trust raised £400 on the day – an excellent donation to further
its work – as well as the opportunity to publicise the charity. To all who supported us,
helped, donated and especially Peter for our marquee [much needed in the heat] a very
big thank you – but special mention to Sandra and Valter and family for making it all
possible – sincerest thanks to you all. [Marian Foers]

OBITUARY
ROBERT LACEY
Rob Lacey of Pudding Bag Lane, Exton died suddenly and unexpectedly at
work in Peterborough on 23rd April, aged 51. The funeral, conducted by Anne
Adamson, took place at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Exton, followed by
burial in Exton churchyard. The organist was Linda Hall; musical tributes were
made by James Goodman and Sophie Hobby and spoken tributes were paid
by Helen and Edward Lacey and Jonathan Head. The eldest child of
Rosemary and Jim Lacey, Rob was born in Chester and educated at
Lancaster Royal Grammar School before gaining a university sponsorship in
engineering with GEC at Whetstone, Leicestershire. He met his wife, Jane,
shortly before matriculating to Pembroke College, Cambridge to read
Chemical Engineering. After graduating, Rob worked at GEC then moved into
Finite Element Analysis, first at Boeing and then, for 15 years, with his two
partners in their own successful consultancy, Matrix Stress Analysis. Rob and
Jane lived in Shearsby, Leicestershire for nine years before moving to Exton in
1995.Since 2003, Rob has worked at Perkins Engine Company in
Peterborough as a Senior Team Leader in the CAE Department. Rob was an
expert in the application of Abaqus software in his field of engineering and
made a major contribution to the Abaqus User Group both as Chair and as a
keynote presenter at international conferences. He was scheduled to deliver
another presentation in late May this year at the conference in Providence,
Rhode Island, USA. When living in Shearsby, Rob was a leading member of
the Lutterworth Labour Party and in local elections successfully piloted
innovative canvassing strategies. After moving to Exton, Rob became a muchrespected county councillor in Rutland from 1996 to 2003 as a member of the
Labour Party. He was ward member for Exton, Greetham and Stretton and
chaired the Planning Committee with calmness, good humour and flair.
Rob was a keen fell-walker and map-reader and he knew the Lake District fells
like the back of his hand. He spent many holidays walking with Jane in the
Lake District, Scotland, Ireland, Devon and Cornwall and with Helen and Chip
around Bath. He treasured family holidays, always did his research
meticulously- frequently contributing reviews on hotels and restaurants to
8
Tripadvisor- and he enjoyed travelling in France, Tuscany, Spain, Northern
California, Oregon and New England. Over the years he became a keen
gardener and, as something of a perfectionist, always insisted on tackling most
of the household DIY jobs, which he did very successfully. Rob was an avid
reader and in his own writing of reports, reviews and presentations he
expressed himself fluently, pithily and impeccably; indeed, he would have
enjoyed reading for an English degree as much as in his chosen academic
discipline. Rob loved life, he loved his family and he loved the company of
friends. He had the gift of friendship and, with his larger-than-life charisma and
humour, together with his 6 foot 6 inch stature, he made his mark wherever he
went, whether in his social life, at university, at work, on holidays or round and
about Rutland. Rob was a loyal and devoted husband, son, brother, uncle and
godfather. He enjoyed spending time locally with his parents, Rosemary and
Jim and his sister, Anthea, in Bath with sister, Helen and her husband, Chip,
and in Edinburgh with brother, Ed, his partner, Sarah and their daughter, Beth.
He was an excellent host and entertainer and a keen partygoer; he very much
enjoyed visits to local hostelries and restaurants and had a lifelong passion for
music, from The Beatles and David Bowie to Muse. In recent years he
mastered the guitar and frequently joined in jamming sessions at social
gatherings as well as performing to local acclaim at the Extonbury Music
Festival with “Labour’s Lost Luvvies.” Rob leaves his wife, Jane, his parents,
Rosemary and Jim, his sisters, Anthea and Helen, his brother, Ed, his
brothers-in-law, Chip and Peter, his nephew, Tobie, nieces, Anna and Beth,
their mothers, Julie and Sarah and his mother-in-law, Iris.Family mourners

The Olympic Torch Relay 3rd July route through Rutland includes:
Langham (14:18 – 14:25), Oakham (14:29 – 14:43), Rutland Water (14:54
– 15:42) and Uppingham (16:15 – 16:24).
A warning has been issued after an elderly and vulnerable resident paid £99 to fraudsters
for a useless and potentially dangerous ‘plug-in' energy saving device [22 June 2012]. The
fraudster contacted the elderly woman by telephone claiming to be from her energy supplier. The
caller offered her a plug-in device which they claimed would reduce her energy bills by 40 per
cent. This is a known scam, which has caused elderly and vulnerable customers up and down
the country to give out their bank details over the phone. The caller always appears to be very
credible because they provide the consumer's details and, on occasions, some or all of the digits
10
of their debit or credit card. Payment for the device is taken over the phone. A few days later, the
consumer will receive a small grey plastic plug-in device, circle on the front with the following
wording: "Intelligent energy saver electricity-saving box the result is the best". Be wary of cold
callers!
EXTON & GREETHAM CE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Serving the communities of Greetham and Exton
We have certainly been busy since our last newsletter. The school celebrated
the Diamond Jubilee with a picnic lunch followed by a party for the children.
The children recorded their own Jubilee song which has been sent to the
Queen for her to enjoy. Some of our children went to Burghley House to be
part of the Queens Jubilee Picnic and we are all going to Rutland Water to
enjoy witnessing the arrival of the Olympic Torch.
Just a reminder, that we have a Salvation Army clothes and shoe collection bin
in the school car park; so please support the Salvation Army by using it to
recycle your unwanted clothes etc.. Our next, now ever popular community
lunch will be held on Thursday 12th July at 1.30pm. The cost is £3.50 for a
lovely homemade two course meal and after dinner singing! Please give the
school a ring (01572 812380) to book your place.
The children have once again been very excited by the arrival of our chicks.
They love watching the eggs hatch and seeing the chicks grow and develop.
We have once again managed to find local homes for them.
What have we been doing and what are we up to!
 Olympic celebrations with Brooke Hill Academy

OPEN INVITATION
Our new rector Revd Marcus Purnell will be licensed on 22 September 2012 at
15 30 in Cottesmore. Everyone is welcome but it would be helpful if I could be
advised of numbers. Following the service there will be a reception in
Cottesmore Community Centre. Patricia (813118).
FINANCES: In the last two newsletters I have drawn our situation to your
attention and have only received two responses. It is now worse. Our boiler
has finally died and in our present circumstances I see no way of any
replacement heating. The PCC will discuss this at a meeting on 16 July,
please advise me if you have any ideas. In the long term the only thing that will
rescue the situation is more regular donations. Patricia Hagger (813118)
