EXTON VILLAGE Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2012 Issue 108 EXTON FRIENDLY SOCIETY BANNER - UPDATE The Exton Friendly Society Banner is now back in Rutland, having been conserved , and is safely in storage at the Rutland County Museum in Oakham. Staff there are in the early stages of planning a textiles exhibition, to take place next year, where the Banner will be on public display and will, I am told, probably be the star of the show. [Meryl Hart] A BIG THANK YOU from Annie Lea for all the friends who made her 80th birthday on 31st May such a lengthy and wonderful celebration and for the tribute in the July newsletter. Vehicle Identity Theft It is no longer easy to buy number plates unless you are the the registered owner,so criminals are 1 increasingly resorting to stealing number plates to disguise the identity of the vehicles that are being used for their activities. You can purchase a set of tamper proof number plate fixing screws from the Police Station for £1, and these will be fixed free by any Garage in Rutland when your car is serviced. Fitting these special screws will be a big help to the Police, making life more difficult for criminals. It will also save you money if your car is targeted. The screws are far cheaper than buying a set of replacement number plates. ~~~~ The 2012-13 campaign launches on 19 July 2012 and aims to empower elderly or vulnerable consumers to make effective purchasing decisions when buying on their doorstep and reduce their vulnerability to rogue traders. The OFT is working with local authority Trading Standards Services, the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Direct Selling Association and other key players to increase awareness of the issue of rogue doorstep trading amongst the campaign’s primary target audience - UK residents over 70 years and their families, friends and carers. Building on this there will be a broader campaign in the Autumn of 2012 focusing on Doorstep selling and Scams. The July campaign provides consumers with practical tips and informs them of their rights including the following: Think twice before you buy and if you are made to feel under pressure to make a purchase, have the confidence to say no. Be wary of time-limited or exclusive offers that need to be signed on the spot - this can be a high pressure sales tactic. Double check the facts. Do you fully understand the costs and know whether it includes extras like installation, on-going serving charges or warranties? Always shop around to compare products and prices. Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion. If you spend more than £35 with a trader on the doorstep, you usually have seven days in which to cancel (subject to certain conditions). If in doubt, call the Citizens Advice consumer service on 08454 040506 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk. ~~~~~~~~~ Mobile phone security - If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that he or she is a company engineer, or telling you that they are checking your mobile line, and you have to press #90 or #09 or any other number, end this call immediately without pressing any numbers. There is a fraud company using a device that once you press #90 or #09 they can access your 'SIM' card and make calls at your expense. 2 A Message to Dog Owners We are fortunate to live in Exton, with it's very low crime rate, but those who receive the weekly Police alert messages and read the local papers will know that crime is never far away. Dog owners can play an important part in keeping Exton an even more secure and safe place to live. They are often up and about when most of us are asleep in our beds or watching TV, and they visit parts of Exton which some of us never get to. They are therefore in a good position to see any unusual or suspicious activity. Would everyone, including dog owners and walkers keep an alert eye open and report anything suspicious on 101, it all helps the Police build up a bigger picture which in term helps combat crime. ~~~~~ There has been a spate of vehicles being targeted for their petrol/diesel in the Rutland area. Please be vigilant by parking your vehicle in areas where the vehicle can be seen, park on stones or gravel, the noise may alert you. Park under security lights if you have them. There has also been a catalytic converter taken in the area, again be vigilant and try and park your vehicle on driveways or in garages. Make it as difficult as possible. Exton School Community Lunch At the last Community Lunch held at Exton and Greetham C.of E.Primary School, the cook, Lizzy Rawcliffe was presented with a bouquet to show the 3 appreciation of villagers who have enjoyed the delicious meals she has provided at this years’ lunches. A lunch, followed by entertainment by the children, is held approximately every two months. If you would like to join in you can do so by ‘phoning the school on 812380. The next lunch will take place on October 11th. Please contact Chris Wallace on 812081 Just come along to a meeting and see what we do!! Our next meeting is on Tuesday 18th September at 7.30 pm held at the Fox & Hounds ‘VILLAGE FRIENDS EXTON CHURCH’ – As many of you will know, the finances of the Parish Church are in a dire situation and the small regular congregation cannot provide sufficient funds to keep the building open and adequately heated. To this end a small group of villagers, who are not all worshippers but who value the church building as an important part of the community have decided to form a fund raising group in order to raise money to help the building to remain open. We plan to have six major fund raising events a year interspersed with coffee mornings, cake stalls, etc. and we hope that we and you will enjoy ourselves along the way. We have already had several volunteers to organise such events. In addition to supporting the planned events we are hoping that ‘friends’ of the church might be prepared to do one of the following on an annual basis: 1. Make an annual donation of £20 2. Collect copper coins in a jam jar 3. Fill a smartie tube with 20pence pieces [Tubes and smarties provided!] which will hold about £12. In order to be able to answer any questions and listen to comments and further suggestions there will be a meeting in the Fox & Hounds on Thursday 13th September at 7.30 pm. ........Sally Miller 01572 811411 / Ed Miller 01572 811411/Annie Lea 01572 813446 /Annette Oliver 01572 812233 5 The Border Morris side "Way of the Wyrd" visited Exton on the day of the produce show and performed a range of traditional and newly written dances in front of the Fox and Hounds. Based in Loughborough, the side performs throughout the East Midlands, and this was their first trip to Rutland - but not their last, as they have already been asked to come back to Exton! More information on the side can be found on their website www.wayofthewyrd.com, or from local Exton "Wyrdo" Meggie Hiley (812509). The 24th Exton Produce & Craft Show was held in the Village Hall. Outgoing Secretary, Lynda Berry, reported that the show was well supported and considering the dismal weather over the last few months, there was a good selection of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The home produce and craft sections also had a good number of exhibits. Included in the Children’s Section was a wonderful display from Exton & 6 Greetham Primary School of wooden spoons decorated as Scarecrows; the judge, Val Drew, was so impressed that each and every one received a Highly Commended Award after 1st, 2nd and 3rd had been chosen. There was a good turnout in the most highly contested class, “Victoria Sandwich – Men only”, which was won by Mick Bell. The Lady Juliana Noel kindly presented the awards, after which she was presented with a posy of flowers by Charlie Burrows and a cheque for her chosen charity, the N.S.P.C.C. August, Exton lost its oldest male inhabitant. Born in Staffordshire, and the first member of his family to attend Grammar School, Ron arrived in Exton 22 years ago where, with Jean, his wife of 67 years , he began transforming the virgin meadow surrounding their new bungalow into an amazingly beautiful garden. This garden won the Campden Salver for Best Garden many times, and Ron and Jean were always willing to partake in the Open Gardens organised by the Produce Show Committee to fundraise for various good causes. Ron and Jean’s home-made lemonade , served on these occasions became well known , raising funds for Exton Church. Ron served on both the P.C.C. (for 12 years) and the P.C. (for 9 years). In later years Ron and Jean were founder members of the Dinosaurs, a group of friends dining monthly at the Fox & Hounds, named by Ron. Until his recent illness Ron kept busy in his workshop, or reading his Daily Telegraph and doing cryptic crosswords. He will be missed.
