YEAR 11 INTO 12 SUMMER TRANSITION TASK 2015 Subject: Health & Social Care Qualification/Level: Subsidiary Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 3) Examination Board: Edexcel The following task is to be completed by week beginning 1st September and brought to your first lesson. The Task Scenario You are working in Peace Haven House, a residential care home for the elderly. The home’s manager leads a team of 15 trained and untrained nursing staff. Currently she is very concerned about the attitude of some of the staff towards two service users, one is a practising Hindu and one is HIV positive. In addition, she is also aware of the problem that staff have in a small residential home of being able to report bad practice or abuse. In an attempt to resolve some of the issues she is in the process of setting up a code of anti-discriminatory practice and rewriting the home’s policies that relate to equal opportunities, using equal opportunities legislation as the main source. All staff are to be given training to make sure they understand the new policies. Your task is to assist the manager in producing information for the in-house training programme which will be entitled ‘Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care.’ How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification as a whole As a student following a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma course you will need to have the confidence to independently research information and present your findings. You will need to be able to follow detailed success criteria and produce clearly presented assignments. Work produced that successfully meets the criteria could form part of your coursework portfolio. How the work should be presented You should produce a written booklet to address the success criteria. You should focus on the requirements and avoid including any irrelevant (albeit interesting) information. How the work will be assessed The work will be assessed by your teacher to determine how well you have followed the success criteria and the level of detail you include in your work. You will be given an overall grade for the piece of work following assessment. Success criteria What you need to do to succeed: Describe discriminatory practise in health and social care. To do this you must describe the following key terms: infringement of rights, covert and overt abuse of power, prejudice, stereotyping, labelling, bullying and abuse. (Pass) Explain the concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care. (Merit) Assess the effects, on those using a service, of three different discriminatory practices in health and social care settings (relate your answer where appropriate to the scenario above) Examples of discriminatory practise include: infringement of rights, covert or overt abuse of power, prejudice, stereotyping, labelling, bullying and abuse Effects of discriminatory practice include: marginalisation, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity, restricted opportunities, negative behaviours such as aggression or criminality, loss of rights such as overriding individual rights by the use of power and force.
