Assignment: English Learner (EL) Case Study. Accompanies Module: Anchor Assignment Points Possible: 60 Instructions: This assignment prepares the future classroom teacher with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to work with future EL students. In addition, this assignment allows for practical application of the Freeman and Freeman article, “Who are our English Language Learners, and what factors influence their academic performance? (2001). A part of working with any student or groups of students is to fully understand the educational background students bring to the learning experience. In regards to English Learners, this educational background may include home language, educational experiences, parent education, and immigration history if applicable. This background information provides a complete picture of your students and supports you as a classroom teacher in developing your ELs language proficiency. Drawing upon information you have learned from your course readings and assignments in this class, you are to create s complete profile of an EL student in your classroom that will help inform instructional practice. You will gather data from a variety of sources (i.e. the EL student, former classroom teachers of the EL student, parent liaison, student files, parents, etc.) However, it is not mandatory to interview the parent in order to describe the EL student. These are examples of possible questions that you would consider as a classroom teacher, it is not expected that you respond to each of these questions.
