Curriculum Descriptions

An Overview of Canadian Political and Economic System

A comparative review of the different levels and characteristics of political and economic governance in Canada that includes: a discussion of the merits of various forms of democratic government; the role of ideology in government formation; the evolution of the Canadian economy in relation to political formation, i.e. labour, capital, inflation, interest rates, the stock market, exchange rates. The discussion is completed with a discussion of the relationship between political and economic indicators and the development of policy.

Canadian agricultural status and structure

An economic overview of the Canadian agriculture and agri-food system, providing: an introduction to the Canadian agriculture and agri-food system; a snapshot of structural changes that are occurring throughout the system in response to various factors; and background data and information that inform public discussions on challenges and opportunities facing the Canadian agriculture and agri-food system.

Agricultural financial organization, agricultural loan and crop insurance

As an agency of the Ontario government, Agricorp delivers government and non-government risk management programs. Agricorp's expertise in effective program design and efficient delivery give the Agency an advantage in partnering with industry and government to help producers manage all kinds of risks, including financial, food safety, environmental, and market security.

September 6-17

Agricultural product marketing and supply chain management

The traditional supply chain for agriculture has been comprised of a series of commodities loosely linked together by open markets. However, as a portion of agriculture moves away from commodities to agricultural products with specific attributes, the need for integrated and coordinated supply chains increases substantially.

Farm management and agricultural science

Analysis of farming resources, alternatives, choices and opportunities within the framework of resource restrictions and the social and personal constraints of farm business.

Agribusiness management

Discussion of the main aspects of food and agribusiness, such as quality systems, product export, marketing, human resource management, supply chain management, globalization, sustainability, logistics and strategic management, set in an international business environment.

Rural infrastructural development and community development

Rural-urban interdependencies represented by commuting patterns illustrate the urban centre’s dependence on the rural labour force and the rural communities’ dependence on urban employment opportunities. There are very real infrastructure implications of this relationship.

Discussion of the vital importance of rural-urban interdependence on both rural and urban areas and the need for joint infrastructure planning for the existing and expected future interface. Joint planning could ease congestions, slow urban sprawl, and preserve valuable green space, while stimulating rural revitalization and enhancing rural quality of life. Analytic tools used by municipalities across Canada when making major infrastructure decisions will be reviewed.

Rural education, medical insurance and pension system

Rural education from the viewpoint of Ontario’s shift over the last 40 years from a rural province to one that has a much larger urban population. Focus on the demographic change in 5 areas of program, staff, budget, facilities, and community. The difference budget makes to equality between rural and urban education
