CHEMISTRY 11 COURSE OUTLINE Department of Science, Matthew McNair Secondary School Instructors: Ms. R. Bains, Ms. Y.L. Pan Emails: Ms. Bains (Rbains@sd38.bc.ca), Ms. Pan (yeangling@gmail.com) Office hours: For extra help, please see me after class Meeting time: 8:20am – 9:32am (Block A) Rm116 Homework Board: http://ch11pan.wikispaces.com/ Course Description The intent of this course is to develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts in chemistry. The topics which will be covered include Skills and Processes of Chemistry, the Nature of Matter, Atomic Theory, the Mole Concept, Chemical Reactions, Solution Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Throughout the course, students will further their understanding of these topics by utilizing the knowledge and skills gained to conduct experiments, perform discussions, complete assignments and group projects. Required Textbooks 1) Hebden Chemistry 11: A Workbook for Students by James A. Hebden 2) Heath Chemistry Laboratory Experiments (Lab Manual) Supplies Required Please have a 3-ring binder, notebook or loose-leaf papers to copy notes and a scientific calculator (graphing calculators are not allowed during tests). Expectations 1) Be on time for class. 2) For missed tests and assignments with a valid reason, incompletes will be given first. Then, student will have an opportunity make up for the missing work. Please see the teacher about the deadline. It is student’s responsibility to make up for the missing work as soon as possible. 3) There will be no re-tests unless there are extenuating circumstances explained to the teacher. A doctor’s or parent’s note must be provided. 4) For cheating on tests, student will receive an automatic zero, sent to the principal’s office and parents/guardians will be contacted. 5) Treat everyone with respect and courtesy. 6) Check the homework board daily for assignments and notices. Evaluation Students will be assessed throughout the course in this way: Type of Assessment Percentage Assignments 10% Labs/Projects 20% Tests/Quizzes 50% Final 20% Total 100% Preview of Topics Topic Preview Skills and Processes of Chemistry - Safety techniques and proper use of protective equipment - Significant figures - Unit conversion Unit I: pg 1 to 8 Unit II: pg 9 to 40 - Properties of elements, compounds and mixtures - Physical and chemical changes - Naming compounds Unit III: pg 41 to 64 Unit IV: pg 67 to 74 - Development of the model of the Unit VIII: pg 139 to 192 The Nature of Matter Atomic Theory Relevant Sections in Hebden atom and subatomic structures - Quantum chemistry - Electronic configuration - Lewis structures - Trends in the table Mole Concept - Significance of the mole - Empirical and molecular formulae - Calculations involving concentration in terms of molarity Unit V: pg 77 to 104 Chemical Reactions - Balancing equations - Types of chemical reactions - Stoichiometric calculations Unit VI: pg 105 to 122 Unit VII: pg 123 to 138 Solution Chemistry - Solubility of solutes - Dilution factor Unit IX: pg 193 to 212 Organic Chemistry - Naming organic compounds - Functional groups Unit X: pg 213 to 246
