COMPANY PROFILE DIREKTORAT PENELITIAN DAN PENGABDIAN MASYARAKAT (DPPM) UNIVERSITAS ISLAM INDONESIA Jl. Kaliurang KM 14,4, Ngaglik, Sleman, Yogyakarta A. Introduction UII, as a higher education institution, through “Directorate of Research and Community Services” (DPPM) makes research and community services as one of ways realizing UII’s visions which is giving benefits to community (rahmatallil’alamin) and also developing the university. This is the form of UII’s Catur Dharma which includes research and community service activities. DPPM is the academic implementer which has the roles to conduct, coordinate, supervise, and assess researches and community services, and also be involved in improving human resource competence needed. Since the beginning, DPPM UII has facilitated and encouraged academic community at UII to conduct researches and community services both individually and in group. To do its roles, functions, and limitation of the program, DPPM UII is developed trough a coordination mechanism of UII’s Unit I; a unit directed by Rector Assistant I (Pembantu Rektor I). DPPM UII is a coordinating institution for academic community to conduct researches and community services. Facing the facts that the number of students who enrol at UII is fluctuating and the society’s demand is very dynamic, UII has determined its position as a research university. A research university can be defined from how many researches used in its teaching learning processes and how many holders of PhD in the university. As an effort to achieve its optimum role as a coordinating institution for academic community to conduct researches and community services, DPPM has a synergy with various components in society and also institutions to cooperate in improving the concepts of research and corporate social responsibility activities. B. Visions and Missions 1 ■ Visions Becoming a Research and Community Services Center with high productivity and quality and also being able to respond the society’s needs and giving benefits for them by applying the principals of charitable knowledge and scientific good deeds. ■ Missions 1. To conduct activities to improve research quality and quantity which can support knowledge improvement and development. 2. To produce researches which have academic contribution for society. 3. To conduct activities to improve society’s quality of life through community services. 4. To provide activities for society through KKN. C. Main Tasks and Functions 1. As an institution mediator which bridges demand and supply, and also problems and UII’s solutions. 2. As an institution which coordinates researches and community services for the sake of society. 3. As an institution which coordinates research findings and community services for society in the fields of science and technology, and also social and humanism. D. Development Strategy Directions The policy on research and community services in DPPM is directed to activities improving society’s prosperity and quality of life which have humanism characteristic, reflect Islamic values, and are aimed to create green urbanization as a respond to global warming. To achieve the visions and missions above, DPPM UII apply these strategic directions below: 1. Improving researcher’s professionalism and integrity. 2. Improving qualified research programs. 3. Improving research collaborations with various institutions. 4. Conducting internship program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata). 5. Developing the organization management. 6. Improving the organization’s facilities. 7. Providing technology information database. 2 E. Activities In general, the activities conducted by DPPM include: 1. Research in the field of Social Humanism and Science-Technology. This is a regular program which is aimed to facilitate lecturers and researchers in conducting their research. The policy on research and community services in DPPM is directed to research which can improve society’s prosperity and quality of life which have humanism characteristic and reflect Islamic values. In general, the researches conducted by DPPM include: a. Research on Social and Humanism b. Research on Science and Technology c. Reseach on Gender d. Research on Environment e. Reseach on Health 2. Community Services. This activity is aimed to contribute the works of lecturer and researcher to society as implementation of the university’s Catur Dharma. It can be conducted at any time by lecturers and researchers at Universitas Islam Indonesia. 3. Student Internship (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/ KKN). Internship activity at UII has been started since 1978. Its models include 5 alternative models which can be choosen by students based on their available time and interest. The 5 models are Regular 1, Regular 2, Extension, Partnership, and Independent Internship. In its development, the internship activity is made synergy with the research activity by adding 2 new models. They are Internship of Community Services and Thematic Internship. 3
