To all Advisors: Computer science will be adding five new core courses into the curriculum for the Fall Semester. Each of these classes will be required by any student majoring in any area of computer science. It is recommended that students, especially those interested in networking, Web design and programming, take CIS 110 as their first elective course. Our core courses are: CIS 110 Introduction to Computer Programming and Logic CIS 146 Microcomputer Applications CIS 273 Introduction to Networking Communications CIS 268 Software Support CIS 269 Hardware Support Also, many of our existing courses have been assigned new numbers. Courses that have changed course numbers are as follows – old numbers in parenthesis: CIS 113 (CIS 196E) Spreadsheet Software Applications CIS 117 (CIS 196A) Database Management Software Applications CIS 212 (CIS 211) Visual Basic Programming CIS 213 (CIS 212) Advanced Visual Basic Programming CIS 203 (CIS 196I) Introduction to the Information Highway CIS 207 (CIS 198) Introduction to Web Development – HTML/XML CIS 208 (CIS 196F) Intermediate Web Development - FrontPage CIS 209 (CIS 282) Advanced Web Development – Scripting CIS 275 (CIS 156W) Workstation Administration Students wanting to begin the networking option degree plan should take CIS 110, CIS 273, CIS 268 and CIS 269 during the Fall Semester. For programming majors, CIS 110 may be taken with CIS 212 (beginning VB programming). Later we will recommend that this course be taken first but during the transition phase this next year and for students who have entered under a previous catalog, we are recommending taking them together. It will be a good course to use as an elective if the student started under the old catalog. It is designed to help students understand the program writing process and to learn problem solving techniques necessary for all aspects of working with computers. Students can take more than one core CIS class in one semester. There are no prerequisites for the courses. CIS 110 is the only class that is a prerequisite for programming or web design. We will still offer CIS 130 for non-degree majors. As you council students we would appreciate it if you would follow the above recommendations. We need to inform everyone that helps students register since, the computer science teachers see only a few of the students. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Janis Farmer, Linda Hanson or Hal Harris on the Shelby Campus and Alan Cook, Donna Cook, Wade Crawford and Teresa Hitt on the Jefferson Campus. Please note: There has been some confusion under our CIS 146 section. Courses with WS TBA means the course still meets for three hours and week with the fourth hour as web supported.
