Ghana Immersion Application
May 30-June 12, 2014

Thank you for your interest in the SLIC Goes Global program. This year we will have the opportunity to dialogue
around social justice, privilege and leadership while immersing ourselves in the Ghana culture during the dates of
May 30-June 12, 2014 (subject to change a day or two based on flight availability). This international immersion
trip will require both time and commitment. Space is very limited, we ask those interested to reflect on the
benefits of attending a trip like this one, fill out the attached application form, and answer a few reflection
questions. The information you provide will help us better discern and select trip participants based on the
established criteria.
APPLICATION DUE
Monday, March 24 at 5pm – no late applications will be accepted.
We will complete the application review and contact you by March 26 with a response. We may ask to set up an
interview to help us make the decision.
COST
Estimated total cost: ~$3200 (subject to change)
This cost includes: airfare, travel insurance, all meals and lodging, in-country transportation, and pre-trip
materials. Not included in this cost are passport applications, visa, immunizations, and spending money.
Associated Students has supplemented the trip and the group will participate in both group and individual
fundraising to reduce this cost.
**Cost should not prevent anyone from applying for this trip.** If finances are a deterrent, please contact
jschreiber@sandiego.edu in the SLIC to ask about financial assistance and payment plans.
REQUIREMENTS
 Be enrolled as a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
 Complete and submit all required application materials by March 24 at 5pm.
 Be in appropriate physical, emotional, psychological health.
 Be willing and able to cope with a variety of potentially challenging situations and circumstances, such as
living simply, living in the context of community, and encountering people who live in abject poverty.
 Attend four preparation meetings. The dates and times of these meetings will be based on the group.

PART III: REFLECTION QUESTIONS
In 2 pages or less, please answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. You may wish to answer each
question individually or compose a short essay.
1. Why are you interested in this Immersion Program to Ghana? What do you hope to gain and contribute
to this experience?
2. Upon returning, how would you apply what your learn?
3. You will be living simply (no email, cell phone, ipod, etc.) in basic living conditions (i.e., limited running
water and electricity). What do you hope to gain or learn from living this way? What do you think will be
the most challenging about it?
4. What has been your experience with dialoging around social justice? How have you been affected by
these experiences?

jschreiber@sandiego.edu by March 24 at 5pm with a copy of your passport (if you have one). Your signature indicates that you
understand your commitment to participate in this immersion trip, to attend all meetings, and to assist with fundraising
projects. After you are selected, you will be responsible for a $200 nonrefundable security deposit. You are also responsible for
any trip costs not covered by your deposit and fundraising.
