Please present your answers in a clear way, draw sketches wherever needed, and be
careful about the units.
Note that: Ip =  d4/32 and A= d2/4 for circular cross section,  or  = P/A ,  = /L ,
 = PL/AE , t =  T L ,  = - l / a, P= T  and /r = T/Ip = G/L
Q.1 (A) Shear load (5 Points)
Link AB, of width b = 50 mm and thickness t = 6
mm, is used to support the end of a horizontal
beam. Knowing that the average normal stress in
the link is -140 MPa, and that the average shearing
stress in each of the two pins is 80 MPa, determine
(a) the diameter d of the pins, (b) the average
bearing stress in the link.

Q.2 Axial load (5 Points)
Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are
made of steel (E = 205 GPa) and are
welded together at B and loaded as shown.
Knowing that d1 = 50 mm and d2 = 30 mm,
find:
(a) The average normal stress at the
midsection of rod AB, and rod BC.
(b) The distance that point C move
downward.

Q.3 Thermal Stresses (5 Points)
At room temperature (20⁰C) a
0.5-mm gap exists between the
ends of the rods shown. At a
later time when the temperature
has reached 140⁰C, determine
(a) the normal stress in the
aluminum rod, (b) the change
in length of the aluminum rod.
