2012 Deborah Hautau Alpena Community College Deborah Hautau has been a Biology Instructor at Alpena Community College for 19 years; for many of those years she was the only female in the Math and Science Department. A role model for students in science and mathematics, she has directed the Michigan Science Olympiad held annually at Alpena Community College since 1995. As a Science Mentor for Girl Scouts, she encourages and supports young women in their educational pathways to positions in science and biology. She has created global field study opportunities for students in Costa Rica. Professional memberships include: the Michigan Community College Biologists (served as President in 1998); Michigan Science Teachers Association; National Science Teachers Association, the Association of College & University Biology Educators, Audubon Society and National Gardening Club. She has been honored with the following awards: 2011 Alpena Community College Endowed Chair Award; Outstanding Leader Award from the Girl Scouts of Michigan. Ms. Hautau has also been recognized with several research grants. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and her Master of Arts in Biology at Wayne State University.
