Activity choice #1: Long paragraph
Explain the meaning of one of the major themes listed above using
evidence from the novel. Don’t forget to start with a clear topic sentence
that includes the title and author. Your evidence should be your own
summaries of portions of the story. If you quote a part of the story use
proper punctuation and include a page number in parentheses at the
end of the sentence.
Your final draft should include a short introduction, at least one long body
paragraph and then a short conclusion. Your final draft should be in ink
and should be about one page long. Turn in any planning outline and a
rough draft as well.
The final draft is worth 15 points. The planning and rough draft are worth 5.
Activity choice #2: The planned skit
You and a group of your choosing (no more than 6 people) will be
choose one of the scenes listed below. You will list all of the characters
and explain in a paragraph of 6 sentences why the scene is important to
the story and how it relates to one of the themes on the other side of this
paper.

If you want to use another scene, please clear it by Mr. Hurd first. It must
be a critical point in the book and have several speaking parts.
Characters involved:
Discuss and take notes for your paragraph: What does this scene expose
about the characters, the theme, or the plot line?
Be prepared to explain the feelings of the characters and the importance
of the scene after you skit is over or even right in the middle of it.
Everyone in your group must participate in the skit as either an silent actor
or as a reader.
This project is worth 20 points. 5 points for the performance. The
performance grade will be based on the quality of the masks, the
smoothness of the execution and the liveliness of the voices and acting. 5
points will be awarded for demonstrated understanding of the characters
and themes. The paragraph will be worth 10 points.
