Mathematics is hard to communicate via email, so please do not email me your questions, except through the MathXL website. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Respect is an important part of your classroom behavior. This means that you should not be talking with your neighbors or using electronic devices during class. You should also use proper grammar when sending emails to me (i WILL delete ur email if u rite like this). Please treat your fellow classmates with respect by not disturbing them during class. I expect that you are all here because you WANT TO LEARN!!! As a result, I expect that you will work hard, and that you will be ready and prepared to learn algebra every day in class. Quizzes will be given throughout the quarter on Thursdays (at 2:00PM sharp) including this Thursday and the Thursday of dead week. The top 10 quizzes will count towards your grade. Questions for the quizzes will be similar to the homework problems listed on the syllabus and assigned via MathXL. There will be NO MAKE-UPS ON QUIZZES for any reason; however, some quizzes will be dropped. If you miss a quiz, it will automatically become one of the quizzes that you drop. Regular class attendance is essential to your success in this course. You should email me in advance if you plan on missing class for any reason. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for finding out what was covered in your absence and/or meeting any due dates. Homework assignments will be completed through the online program MathXL – the problems listed on the syllabus are for your reference only. Most homework assignments will open at 8 AM on the day that section is covered in class and close at 8 PM on the next class day. MathXL has a calendar which shows these opening and due dates. The homework will be graded electronically and you may redo each assignment to improve your score as many times as you wish as long as the assignment is still open. The five lowest homework scores will be dropped from your homework grade. The homework is a tool to help you learn. It helps you practice problems similar to those that will appear on exams and quizzes. You may access MathXL on your personal computer or through any computer lab on campus. You MUST buy an access code and register to use MathXL – do this immediately!!! Resources for help in College Algebra are readily available, so if you have difficulty understanding the material and/or doing the homework, take advantage of my office hours, the Math Resource Center (open hours listed on the syllabus), help options in MathXL, or a private tutor (list available in Avery 203). Don't wait until the semester is nearly over to ask for help if you need it! A graphing calculator is required. The TI-83 is recommended for this course and its use will be demonstrated in class; however, other graphing calculators are acceptable (with the exception of the TI89 or 92, which cannot be used). If you plan on taking Math 102 or 106, the TI-84 PLUS is recommended for those courses, and is also appropriate for this course. Calculator use will be allowed on all homework, quizzes, and exams; however, full credit won't be earned if algebraic “work” is not present. EXAM POLICIES AND INFORMATION: All hour exams will be given on TUESDAY EVENINGS from 6 to 7 PM (dates below). The location of the exam will not be our regular classroom, but will be announced in class prior to each exam. Hour exams cover all material presented in class and on homework and will generally resemble the exercises listed on the syllabus, in MathXL, and worked in class. Prior notice is REQUIRED if an exam cannot be taken on schedule. Make-up exams will ONLY be scheduled with prior approval from me and must be taken the following morning (Wednesday) at 7:15 AM (location announced in class). Documentation of excuse may be required for a make-up exam to be approved. The COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM will cover all material presented this semester.
