BioData to join new Macmillan Digital Science division
BioData Ltd. has announced that Digital Science, a new division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd., has
acquired an equity stake in the company. The move is part of Macmillan Publishers' new strategy to
focus on providing world-class software tools and services to scientists, managers and funders with
the ultimate aim of making research more productive through the use of technology.

Pharmacology, Principles and Practice deemed 'highly commended' by the BMA 2010 Medical
Books Awards
Pharmacology, Principles and Practice, a textbook created by several University of Toledo (UT)
professors along with others from across the US was deemed 'highly commended' by the British
Medical Association 2010 Medical Books Awards. The awards competition has recognised excellence
in medical publishing since 1996.

Historical automotive and aerospace standards are now available from SAE International
More than 5,000 historical automotive and aerospace standards are now available from SAE
International. Part of SAE International's website enhancements, these standards are previous
versions of technical standards that have since been revised. They are being sold individually in
print and electronic formats.

India's KPO business to touch $10 billion by 2012, says ASSOCHAM study
India's Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) industry may touch $10 billion by 2012, if the sector is
opened for nano and biotech experts and steps are taken to build a strong chain of qualified
professionals, according to a study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and
Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). Currently, the KPO size is estimated to be around US$ 5.7 billion and
the sector has grown at around 15-17 percent in last few years, dominated by professionals
belonging to fields such as management, medical, engineering etc.

Apple iPad may face tough competition in 2011
Apple's iPad is expected to face substantial competition from Microsoft, Research In Motion and
others in 2011, it has been reported. In spite of being a strong holiday seller, the tablet is expected
to face a host of competition in 2011, with Microsoft reportedly readying several Windows-based
tablets for debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Insider threat to cloud security will draw attention next year, says CA Tech poll
CA Technologies recently polled its security experts for their predictions on what to look for in the
coming year with respect to prevailing threats and industry shifts. In 2011, IT security professionals
will need to step up their battle against the insider threat and leverage Identity and Access
Management to shift the view of security to that of an enabler for cloud adoption, the results of the
poll revealed.

The US' National Archives and Records Administration has announced that a new Online Public
Access prototype is being made available to the public at

IEEE GLOBECOM 2010 explores advancements in mobile interactivity
IEEE GLOBECOM 2010 recently held its most successful meeting in the conference's 53-year history
with more than 2,500 scientists, researchers and academia attending nearly 2,000 presentations
dedicated to the advancement of global communications designed to increase the quality of life
worldwide. Held from December 6 - 10, 2010 in Miami, Florida, this annual flagship event of the

STM publisher Elsevier has announced that Professor DeLiang Wang of The Ohio State University has
accepted the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief of Neural Networks. He succeeds the journal's founding
editor Professor Stephen Grossberg of Boston University on January 1, 2011.

Susan Hildreth named new IMLS director
Susan Hildreth's nomination to be director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
was confirmed by unanimous consent by the United States Senate. The Institute, an independent
United States government agency, is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 122,000
libraries and 17,500 museums.

Dr. Bonnie A. Charpentier re-elected as Chair of the Board of Directors of the ACS
The American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced that Dr. Bonnie A. Charpentier, a chemist and
vice president of Metabolex, Inc., in Hayward, California, has been re-elected as Chair of the Board
of Directors of the ACS. First elected to that position in December 2009, she will continue her duties

Software vendor Microsoft Corp. has reportedly announced that data in its hosted business suite
Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) has been downloaded by non-authorised users. Microsoft
confirmed the cloud data breach to Dutch IDG publication Webwereld.

Medtronic paid surgeons to write about spine surgery product, says journal analysis
Medical device maker Medtronic has, over the past decade, enlisted a small group of prominent
surgeons from around the country to do clinical research or write articles about its new spine
surgery product, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). According to a Journal Sentinel analysis of
newly released company payments in 2010 alone, many of those doctors received payments of
hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars each in royalties for a variety of other Medtronic spinal
devices.

Microsoft co-founder Allen re-files patent suit against tech firms over infringement
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has reportedly re-filed his patent suit against Google, Apple and 11
other major tech companies, adding specific examples of the alleged infringement. In August 2010,

he had caused a stir by accusing the companies of infringing on patents developed by his nowdefunct company, Interval Research Corp.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) recently announced that a website for 'Value,
Outcomes, and Return on Investment of Academic Libraries (Lib-Value)', a three-year project
funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is now available at
http://libvalue.cci.utk.edu. A searchable bibliographic database of library value and ROI literature
is now freely available.

Kindle sales for 2010 may reach 8 million
Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc. is reportedly on track to sell over 8 million Kindles in 2010.
This is about 60 percent higher than what analysts had predicted. Analysts had earlier forecast that
about 5 million Kindles would sell this year.

Kindle 3G is bestselling product of all time on Amazon.com
Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc. has announced that the third-generation Kindle is now the
bestselling product in Amazon's history. The company also announced that on its peak day,
November 29, customers ordered more than 13.7 million items worldwide across all product
categories, which is a record-breaking 158 items per second.

ACM TechNews, the tri-weekly email digest that delivers the latest news for IT professionals, is now

Google looking to expand education software sales via app store
Internet search services provider Google, Inc. is reportedly in talks with educational-software
companies to help build a marketplace for online learning programmes. The Google Apps
Marketplace, an online store that launched in March, already offers games and instructional tools
for teachers from companies such as Grockit and Aviary.
