All UNIT 4 PROJECTS
Are due January 31st!
Name:__________________________
C Level DNA Projects:
To earn a C for your DNA project grade:
1.
2.
3.
Everyone must satisfactorily complete the Vocab & DNA/RNA Venn diagram worsheet.
Everyone must do the Rags to Riches found at:
Choose and complete any 3 of the following C-Level options:
OPTION 1: TRANSLATE & TRANSCRIBE A GENE: Go to: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begin/dna/transcribe
Step 1: Click blue box!
Step 2: Transcribe the DNA into RNA by typing (writing) the RNA bases that compliment the DNA.
RNA: U_ _A_ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ DNA: A
Everyone should CHOOSE THREE of these 5 C-Level options to do.

Step 3: Begin translation: Circle the START codon (AUG) in the RNA strand above.
Step 4: Using the gene code chart, match the amino acids to the RNA codons to assemble a protein.
Fill in your Amino acid sequence:
_MET_ _______ ________ _______ _______ STOP
OPTION 2: DNA GAME Go to: http://nobelprize.org/educational/medicine/dna_double_helix/dnahelix.html
Step 1: Read & click NEXT through background questions until game appears.
Step 2: Click on “Organism 1”, the click to begin when you are ready.
Step 3: Match RNA bases to the DNA strands as quickly as you can!
You may want to just focus on one strand the first time…
Step 4: Read descriptions to determine which organism matches. When you find the match,
click on “the DNA belongs to this organism”
Step 5: Fill out this chart for each of the organisms:
INFORMATION
# of chromosomes
ORGANISM #1
ORGANISM #2
ORGANISM #3
Millions of base pairs
# of genes
Organism name:
Your Final score: _________________ points!
OPTION 3: DNA ONLINE QUIZ Go to: http://www.quia.com/quiz/1345840.html
(Ignore “Online quiz avail. Thurs.”)
Step 1: Click START NOW
Step 2: Answer all 15 questions (use notes if needed), hit SUBMIT ANSWER to go to next question
(Most you should know, but a couple are over details we haven’t focused on… try!)
Step 3: PRINT OUT the 1st page of your score report to turn in. (Just page 1, not all 5!)
OPTION 4: HOW DNA CONTROLS THE WORKINGS OF A CELL
Complete worksheet, also available to print from http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/DNAcontrols.html
OPTION 5: DNA WORKSHOP (NOT WORKING on MHS computers due to Shockwave, but it is a
GREAT activity you could do at home!) Go to: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/tryit/dna/
A & B level
Step 1: Click “Go directly to DNA Workshop Activity”
DNA
Projects
Step 2: Do DNA Replication, then do Protein Synthesis
on back
Step 3: Print out last screen to turn in (showing your polypeptide chain)
B Level DNA Projects:
To earn a B for your DNA project grade:
CHOOSE ONE
1. Do C level well (vocab/venn worksheet + 3 of the C level options from the other side)
2. Complete either one of the following B level options:
B level Option 1: Construct a DNA model
Use whatever non-food materials you wish to recreate the double helix.
Must be at least 1 foot in length.
Phosphates, sugars, adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine should be labeled & correctly arranged.
B Level Option 2: DNA Extraction Virtual Lab Go to: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/labs/extraction/
This is much more technical than our class’ rough extraction of Strawberry DNA.
Read, follow directions (“Next” button is in lower right corner). FILL OUT WORKSHEET
A Level DNA Projects:
To earn an A for your DNA project grade:
1. Do C level well (vocab/Venn worksheet & 3 C level options).
2. SKIP the B level!
3. Choose a scientist involved in DNA’s discovery, and then choose a way to write about them
Scientists = Oswald Avery. Rosalind Franklin, Erwin Chargaff, James Watson, Frances Crick
For any A level project: Paraphrase (Reword, do NOT cut & paste information)
Proofread (Read what you wrote. Does it make sense? Spellcheck!)
Cite Sources (Give me the URLs used for info or images; not Google)
CHOOSE ONE
A Level Option 1: Obituary
(see examples)
Cannot do James Watson, since he is still alive!!!
Write a detailed obit., describing the life, accomplishments, and death of the scientist.
First paragraph should be background info (birth date & place, education, how & when they
died). Second paragraph should focus on explaining the importance of their work with DNA.
Be kind, and be creative!
A Level Option 2: Work Application
Imagine one of these scientists is applying for a new position at another university.
Fill in the job application with as many facts as possible, and creatively fill in the gaps.
A Level Option 3: Comic
Using Comic Life (or drawing by hand), create a comic strip showing an important moment in
the scientist’s career. Your comic must show me that you know what that scientist
discovered/did, so give me some details & dialog and identify the people.
got EXTRA TIME in the Computer Lab?

If you haven’t done a B level, DO it!
If you haven’t done an A level, DO it!
If you haven’t done all 9 of your Biology in the News for this semester, DO some.
