You scream. Now we can all scream at ice cream. That’s what 20-year-old Regan Meyer did when she tried the newest freaky flavor, chocolate- covered cricket. “Eeuuuw! I can feel the cricket!” she shrieked. Eat Crickets, Win Prizes Believe it or not, crickets – those grasshopper-like bugs that make such a racket on summer nights – are now turning up in ice cream from coast to coast. Cold Stone Creamery, located in Scotsdale, Arizona, is offering the buggy desert, but they’re not the first to look at crickets and think: desert! Where the Crickets Come From The crickets themselves come from a candy company called Hotlix that sells all sorts of bug treats including maggots, cockroaches, ants and worms. For this ice cream confection, the company raises the crickets in cages until they are about six weeks old. The crickets are fed whole grain bread and apples. Hotlix believes this keeps them healthy and happy – at least until baking day. The crickets get cooked for about five minutes. Then they are coated in chocolate before they are mixed in with ice cream. More Nutritious than Chocolate Crickets actually have nutritional value and are high in protein, says Jordan Levine, a member of the marketing team at Cold Stone Creamery. And workers at Hotlix say Americans are behind times as far as bug eating goes. They point out that lots of different cultures eat insects as part of their regular diet. Stephen MacDonald of Utah’s Department of Health agrees. “I would be more concerned about people eating too much chocolate than too much crickets,” he said.
