JOB DESCRIPTION – STAFF NURSE
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
REPORTS TO: Assistant Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, Director of
Nursing
SUPERVISES: Overall supervisory responsibility for nursing assistants, medication assistants and
related employees as directed by the Nurse Manager.
SUMMARY
Provide nursing practice in the care of the customers and residents, in the care of the physically and
mentally ill, of the Southview Acres Health Care Center. Responsible for maintaining the quality and
adequacy of nursing practice. Responsible for recognizing and assisting in solving professional,
administrative and supervisory problems. Position exercises considerable judgment in applying
professional knowledge in solving nursing problems within established policies and practices and is
reviewed by the supervisor through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Reviews and coordinates the medical care of residents on the unit.

Communicates resident care needs to all shifts.

Receives status report from departing nurse on all assigned residents at gives report at end of
shift.

Provides daily report utilizing unit assignment sheet and care cards.

Coordinates and consolidates calls to physicians and other providers of services.

Verifies completion of all assigned documentation at end of shift.

Prepares, administers, assesses effectiveness of, and documents medications for each resident, in
accordance with physician’s orders.

Manages medications, supplies and equipment including ordering, receiving, storing, and
disposing of all items in accordance with facility policies and procedures.

Implements individualized plan of care for resident and monitors staff providing care.

Reports observations related to resident’s progress or lack of progress and action taken.

Identifies resident problem areas and strengths.

Participates in necessary revision of resident plan of care.

Notifies unit manager, attending physician, and family members of significant changes in a
resident’s condition.

Attends and participates in care conferences as needed.

Utilizes interdisciplinary process to implement restorative nursing measures.

Makes rounds with physicians as needed. Receives, transcribes, and carries out physician’s
orders.

Administers professional services involved in resident care and treatment.

Orders lab. x-ray, ambulance, obtains specimens for lab tests and other services as necessary.

Assists with admits, transfers and discharges residents according to facility procedures

Investigates and records any accidents or incidents in the provision of resident care, following
correct procedures.

Identifies changes in resident’s conditions and initiates rehabilitative measures or notifies RAI of
the significant change in condition.

Reports all problems with supplies/equipment promptly and completes maintenance work
requisition.

Prepares for and works with state and federal inspectors.

Demonstrates knowledge of and enforces state and federal regulations.

Provides necessary safety instruction to staff. Identifies and corrects unsafe acts and hazards.

Participates in ongoing orientation and on-the-station in-services for team members.

Participates in in-service training sessions and professional continuing education programs.

Participates in facility committees as needed.

Participates in departmental Quality Improvement Plan.

Adheres to Southview Acres policies on infection control, safety and resident rights.

Performs other tasks as directed.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, bend and stoop for periods of time.

Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.

Ability to work in a stressful environment.

Ability to respond to emergency/crisis situations.

Exposure to noise. Exposure to blood and/or body fluids.
SUCCESS FACTORS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES)

Current theory base in medical, geriatric and psychiatric nursing.

Current knowledge of state and federal nursing home regulations.

Computer skills, including e-mail, word processing and related facility software.

Ability to prepare clear, concise reports.

Knowledge of needs of resident populations and treatment sources.

Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of others.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret practice standards, professional journals, technical
procedures and government standards and regulations.

Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of issues.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, employees,
residents, families, professionals and the general public.

Ability to work well as a team leader and member.

Skill in reviewing clinical work of others according to professional standards and practice
guidelines.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with current state licensure.

Supervisory experience in a team leader role.

Work experience as a professional nurse, preferably in a like work environment.

CPR Certification.
