PE 42 Hiking Long Island Trails PE 42 Hiking Long Island Trails is currently a Special Topics course. It has been offered successfully for four years at the college. Our department would like your consideration for a permanent place in the course/curriculum of our department. This course is a 10 week outdoor education course. Students gain a great amount of information from this hiking course. Not only do they get to explore many hiking sites in Suffolk County but they are also presented with the local history of the area. Students are introduced to wildlife, environmental concerns, compasses, map reading and trail markings. Participants of this prolonged aerobic activity will increase cardiovascular fitness, reduce anxiety, and stress, maintain health benefits of an exercise program and increase their awareness of the availability and offerings of their local parks. This course is very unique and our department feels it would be a great permanent course for the campus. It adds to the diversity of our offerings and will distinguish us beyond other community colleges. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Chris Cosenza Associate Dean to fill out information below this line ************************************************************************ ****** Type of Curriculum/Course Proposal/Revision Course New X-adopted from special topics, to be placed MSOL as permanent course Revised_______________________________ Adoption______________________________ Curriculum New_______________________________ A.A._____ A.S. _____ A.A.S ____ Revised_____________________________ Certificate Adoption____________________________ Recommendations: This proposal requires the following approval(s) Campus _____ College X TO: Koukounas FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Sam Braunstein, Chris Cosenza, Arthur DelDuca, Theodore Gary P. Campbell, Associate Dean March 28, 2005 PE42-Hiking Long Island Trails Now that the physical education department college-wide has approved the proposal to adopt PE 42-Hiking Long Island Trails as a regular physical education class, changing its status from special topics, I would like to go on record and indicate that I am in favor of the proposal. Hiking Long Island Trails has been offered as a special topics course at the Ammerman campus for the past four years and has during that time proved to be a successfully subscribed to course. In an effort to offer similar courses college-wide, I am recommending that the course be adopted at all three campuses. Please proceed with the formal approval process. Each of the three campuses must vote to accept the proposal. Forward completed documentation to Deans Britton, Jacobs, and Katopes so that they may write their letter of support for this proposal. Since PE42 is a special topics numerical denotation, please assign this course an appropriate number within the physical education course number and section range. Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication to the physical education department. ***SEE LETTER OF SUPPORT FROM DEAN(S) OF FACULTY (NEXT PAGE) FOR VERIFICATION OF APPROVAL*** copies to: Proposer Chairs of Campus Curriculum Committees Department/Area Administrators Deans of Faculty Chair of College Curriculum Committee Associate Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction Vice President for Academic and Campus Affairs Associate Dean of Library Services ALL OF THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised 9/2003 Suffolk County Community College - College Curriculum Committee Letter of Support from Dean(s) of Faculty TO: Art DelDuca, Chair FROM: RD Britton, Campus Dean DATE: May 5, 2005 I have reviewed this proposal and offer my full support. FORMAT FOR NEW COURSE/CURRICULUM PROPOSALS OR COURSE/CURRICULUM MODIFICATION ORIGINATING CAMPUS: ( X) Ammerman ( ) Eastern ( )Western To meet the ideals of Suffolk County Community College, new courses/curriculum should, if appropriate, consider issues arising from elements of cultural diversity. Among the areas in which this can be realized are: textbook choice, selection of library and audio-visual materials, and teaching methodology. Guidelines: Not every item in this format is applicable to every course proposal. Responses of NOT APPLICABLE are acceptable in such instances. The Counseling Office and Library of each campus have materials that can help locate answers about transferability (II d.) and other colleges that offer similar courses (VI a. and b.). Information about offerings at other colleges does not require complete listings where such offerings are numerous. A summary or sampling will suffice. I.
