CATALOG DESCRIPTION To help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies This course teaches skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. II. REQUIRED BACKGROUND/PREREQUISITES None. III REQUIRED TEXTBOOK American Red Cross – Responding to Emergencies: Comprehensive First Aid/CPR/AED IV. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Material will be covered by: group and student activities, instructor lectures, handouts, audio visual material, library research, guest speakers, and internet research. V. COURSE OBJECTIVES » Explain the three emergency action steps to follow in an emergency situation. » Learn the four life-threatening conditions for which you should check » Evaluate lifestyles using the Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Inventory and be familiar with the factors that have an impact on behavior modification. » Recognize the signals of a heart attack. » Be able to describe your role in an emergency situation. » Explain when and how to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number » Describe how to minimize the risk of disease transmission when giving care » Learn the cardiac chain of survival for a victim of cardiac arrest. » Learn the precautions for using and AED. » Demonstrate how to use basic precautions when caring for victims of breathing and cardiac emergencies. » Demonstrate how to check an unconscious adult. » Demonstrate how to care for a conscious and an unconscious choking adult. » Demonstrate how to give CPR to an adult. » Demonstrate how to use an AED for an adult in cardiac arrest. Daily Work (Quizzes, Assignments, Attendance) = 60% The daily work will consist of assignments which will be done at the end of class. These assignments will come from material covered in class or handouts. There will be periodic quizzes covering the lecture material. Attendance will be taken every day and counted toward this 60%. B. Skill Scenarios = 20% The skill scenarios will require you to correctly respond to verbal scenarios given regarding emergency situations. C. Final Exam=20%The final exam will be comprehensive. It will be objective. The review will take place the last class period of the semester. VIII. ABSENCES AND MAKEUP WORK A. Statistics have proven that class attendance is essential to learning. Attend Class. B. The will be NO makeup work on daily assignments or quizzes. C. The final can be made up, if and only if, the student has an excused absence for that particular day of class, and makes up the test within one week of the date the test was given. IX.
