GHW—Geography and History of the World Mrs. Myers julia.myers@evsc.k12.in.us 435-8888 ext 42343 “Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all.” Sam Ewing Course Description: GHW is a two semester required course. Our goal is to survey the geography and history of the world. We will study the world by regions examining the geography and its impact on the political and economic development of the continents. We will spend time looking at the growth of science and technology as well as the effect of contact between the cultures. Supplies We are lucky to have an entire class set of the textbook in this room. You will be assigned a book to use for the year. We will integrate technology as much as possible however you need to bring a pen/pencil, paper and a folder every day. If there are any special considerations that need to be made in the way of supplies for you in this class, please let me know. Assessment Grades are based on your homework, projects, test/quizzes, daily reading assignments and participation. You need to complete and turn in your assignments on time! Do the reading when it is assigned. Tests are performance based in many cases; you need to do more than show you can pick the right answer. We will test over both history and geography. You can expect map quizzes throughout the year. The grading scale is as follows: 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F This course is planned using universal design, a concept where the learning accommodations are already built into how the course is planned. If you feel your educational goals are not met through universal design, speak to me ahead of time. Bonus points are occasionally available. Extra Credit is never given as an individual thing; it is offered to the whole class at one time. Do not count on it to save you at the end of a grading period! Late work is accepted for half credit one day past the due date. Life teaches you that there are second chances, but the second chance is not like the first. Do things right the first time. If you do not pass a test or quiz, it may be retaken. If you pass the retake, your score will be a 60%. You will not receive a higher score than anybody who passed the test or quiz the first time. Attendance and -makeup work: YOU are responsible for getting your makeup work when you are out; it is helpful to have a study-buddy who can help you with notes when you miss class. Daily work will be put in a folder and online. YOU should make arrangements to complete work during Enrichment. There is NO excuse for missing test scores in the grade book. Tests will be made up as on the day you return to class; if you have missed multiple class days, you will have ONE WEEK to make up your test. If you will miss a test or major assignment deadline due to a planned absence, you are expected to turn the work in or take the test early. General Guidelines: 1. All school rules apply—no eating, drinking, texting/using a cell phone or using headphones/earbuds to listen to music. 2. We will show you respect and expect you to show each other respect. You must think about how others will “read” your actions. 3. Purses should be hung from the back of the chairs or placed under your seat—not in your lap or on top of the desk. 4. Be in your seat ready to learn when the bell rings. 5. Come to class prepared everyday. 6. Cheating is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. This includes looking at another students work or copying another student’s work. Any type of cheating will result in a “0” grade. No questions asked! 7. To ensure that all students have the same academic environment for testing, all tests, essays, and quizzes will be designated as SILENT. For the student this means NO talking will be allowed during tests, essays, or quizzes with the exception of questions directed to the teacher. All other conversations (no matter how trivial) will be considered a violation of this agreement and considered cheating. There is no justifiable reason for student-to-student conversation during a test, essay, or quiz. Violations will result in a grade of ZERO on the test, essay, or quiz. 8. Disruptive behavior is unacceptable—this includes tardiness, rudeness, irrelevant class interrupting, etc. If you want respect, you must show respect to others. 9. Stay in your seat until dismissed.
