Cosmetology Program Guidelines for Success
Overview:
Cosmetology is a two-year program consisting of competency-based Cosmetology skills in Lab,
Related / Theory, written tests as well as Science, English, and Math.
Ohio State Board of Cosmetology requires a curriculum of 1500 hours to be eligible to take the
licensure exam. The success of each student depends on meeting all standards set by the cosmetology
instructor, all applicable academics and the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.
 Junior students are required to pass both Lab and Related in order to advance to the senior level.
 If a Junior student does not successfully complete both semesters of Math, Science and English, they
must show evidence of successful completion by September 15 to be eligible to take their licensure
exam with the Senior class.
 Senior students must pass all competencies relevant to the practice of Cosmetology to be eligible for
the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensure exam.
 Any Senior failing in Lab or Related will be ineligible to take their licensure exam with the class.
Both junior and senior students are responsible for practicing and retaking any test or competency
that has not met the minimum standard of 75% as set by the state of Ohio.
To be successful in the cosmetology industry, a professional image must be maintained. Specific
sanitation and safety guidelines must be met. The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology and the Lorain County
JVS require each student to dress appropriately as per safety and sanitation guidelines.
To maintain the Cosmetology Program’s professional standards, all students are required to be
dressed in clean, uniform style clothing, and / or scrubs and closed toed professional footwear with
non- skid soles during the course of the entire school day.
Failure of any Cosmetology curriculum coursework may cause the student to be ineligible for the
licensure exam and their certificate of completion from the Lorain County JVS.
