Higher Education institutions to play key role in securing the UK's digital legacy
The UK's Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the Open Planets Foundation (OPF) are
collaborating to encourage the UK's leading Higher Education (HE) institutions to take up a central

role in European wide efforts to preserve digital heritage. Recently announced at the iPres
conference in Vienna, JISC will become a charter member of the OPF.

Journal of the American Society of Hypertension accepted for coverage in MEDLINE
STM publisher Elsevier has announced that the Journal of the American Society of Hypertension
(JASH) has been selected for inclusion in MEDLINE. MEDLINE is the premier bibliographic database of
the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), containing over 15 million journal article citations, with
a concentration on biomedicine.

CABI to provide collection of over 500 scientific titles to Bookshare
Life sciences publisher Centre for Agricultural Bioscience International (CABI) has announced an
agreement with Bookshare to provide their collection of nearly 500 titles in the areas of
agricultural, animal and veterinary sciences, environmental sciences, human health, food and
nutrition, leisure and tourism, microbiology and parasitology, and plant sciences. Bookshare seeks
to provide equal access to printed content so that members can compete effectively in school,
pursue their career of choice, and participate fully in the intellectual discussions of the day.

AIP and CSTAM sign co-publishing agreement
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has signed a new partnership agreement with the Chinese
Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM). Under the deal, AIP and CSTAM will copublish the new journal Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters (TAML). The journal is slated for
launch in January 2011.

NEJM signs China Agency agreement with The Charlesworth Group

Ovid in deal with China's Institute of Science & Technology to open access to LWW Journal
Definitive Archive collection
Information solutions provider Ovid, part of Wolters Kluwer Health, has signed an agreement with
the Institute of Science and Technology Information of China to provide access to the Lippincott
Williams & Wilkins (LWW) Journal Definitive Archive collection through the National Science and
Technology Library (NSTL). The agreement marks the first US-published medical content to be
included in the NSTL library initiative. Initially, access will be provided to about 300 institutions in
China.

Glasgow Caledonian University opts for ProQuest Central database
Information resources and technologies provider ProQuest has announced that the UK's Glasgow
Caledonian University (GCU) is joining university libraries around the world that are subscribing to
ProQuest Central, a CODiE award-winning database. Students, researchers and lecturing staff at the
university will now have access to what is claimed to be the world's largest, full-text,
multidisciplinary, aggregated database.

Publisher Taylor & Francis (T&F) has announced a new publishing partnership with the Japanese
Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition (JSSSPN) to publish the journal, Soil Science and Plant
Nutrition, from 2011. The journal, previously published by Wiley-Blackwell, is currently in volume
56 (2010).

LWW releases two interactive testing programmes for nursing students
Healthcare publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, has
launched two interactive testing programmes powered by Prep-U for nursing students. The
programmes are claimed to revolutionise how students learn and prepare for the National Council
Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). “Prep-U for Smeltzer, 12th Edition” is derived

Wiley-Blackwell's Biotechnology journals portfolio now available via DeepDyve
Wiley-Blackwell, the STM and scholarly business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., has launched of a pilot
programme to make its portfolio of Biotechnology journals with more than 75,000 articles available
through DeepDyve, an online rental service for scientific and scholarly research articles. The pilot
will feature 26 journals and content dating back to 1912, including the Journal of Pharmaceutical
Science, American Journal of Medical Genetics, Biotechnology and Bioengineering and Cell
Proliferation.

Elsevier unveils enhanced version of digital research tool, BrainNavigator
STM publisher Elsevier has announced a new version of its online research tool, BrainNavigator. The
first version, introduced in 2008, was reportedly well received by the neuroscience researcher
community and received the PROSE Award in 2009. In the updated version, BrainNavigator 3.0,
Elsevier has added new content and functionality to give researchers additional tools to accelerate
their research.

New version of JCB DataViewer released
Glencoe Software, Inc., The Journal of Cell Biology (JCB) and The Rockefeller University Press have
announced the release of the next version of the JCB DataViewer, a scientific image data

Common information standards will save millions of pounds, says JISC report
The UK's Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has commissioned a new report, according to
which, establishing a common data standard for managing research information in the UK could save
the higher education sector millions of pounds. The report found that using a common data model
as a basis for exchanging information will, along with other benefits, significantly reduce the costs
associated with information interchange - between 25 percent and 30 percent - following the
adoption of the Common European Research Information Format (CERIF) as the basis for exchanging
research information across the sector.

OA advocate Harold Varmus to keynote Open Access Week kick-off event

The 62nd annual Frankfurt Book Fair kicked off on Wednesday. According to fair director Jürgen
Boos, more than 7,500 exhibitors from 111 countries are expected this year, posting a three-percent

The longtime editor-in-chief of The Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), Herbert Tabor, has asked

Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has announced that Deborah E. Wiley will retire from her role as

ARL and Ithaka S+R awarded IMLS Grant to study digitised special collections
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grants Program has
awarded the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and Ithaka S+R, the strategy and research arm
of ITHAKA, a grant amount of $464,286 to study how libraries, archives, and museums are sustaining
digitised special collections. The 2-year study builds upon past work examining sustainability of

More publishers agree to contribute content to Ex Libris' Primo Central
Library solutions provider Ex Libris Group has announced that many new information providers have
agreed to contribute their content to the Primo Central index of scholarly materials. Managed by Ex

Elsevier introduces new publishing model to increase publication speed
STM publisher Elsevier has announced the launch of Article-Based Publishing - a new publishing
model that publishes articles as final and citable without needing to wait until a journal issue is
complete. With an increasing focus on online publishing, there is a growing need for innovative
publication models geared towards individual articles instead of the print-based issue model.
Article-Based Publishing is the assigning of final citation data on an article-by-article basis,
decoupled from the compilation of the journal issue itself.
