Guidelines for filling out the 4-H Market Project Report
Use this form for the following market projects:
Market Beef
Market Swine
Market Sheep
Meat Goats
Turkeys
Major changes & additions from old report form:
 No project stories. Incorporate what you would write in your story into your description of your project
meetings.
 Leaders must sign your project report form. If it is not filled out properly, your leader will NOT SIGN IT,
and you will not be able to take your market animal to the Jr. Livestock Show. You sign acknowledging
that you prepared the report and believe it to be correct. Your parent signs that they have reviewed it
and believe it to be correct.
 If you will take this project again next year, tell us what else you would like to learn in this project.
 You no longer have to list if you gave a demonstration or speech for this project on the market form.
Show on your PDR, category 6, Communication Skills.
 You do not show the results of the Jr. Livestock Show in this report. This information now goes in the
appropriate categories on your PDR.
Examples:
 Entered your animal in the Jr. Livestock Show [Category 2, Project Skill Activities(Project Exhibit)]
 Placed or won showmanship [Category 2, Project Skill Activities (Project Showmanship)]
 Placed overall 1st through 8th place in market or won champion, grand champion, reserve
champion or grand reserve champion (Category 7, Honors & Recognition)
 Participated in the Cattlemen’s Judging Contest [Category 2, Project Skills Activities (Judging
Contests)]
Carefully read the information shown below for each section of the new form and follow the directions.
Project Meeting Learning Experiences: (If you do not attend all the meetings, list the date, and whether it was
an excused or unexcused absence. It is excused if you called the leader before the scheduled meeting.)
 For each project meeting write your learning experience in essay format. The reader should get a clear
picture of what you learned in your project and what you did at your meetings. The form is set up so that
you have about five lines for each meeting. Write a lot of detail. Use more lines if necessary and add
sheets if needed.
Acceptable example:
I learned about pneumonia in pigs. It is a lung inflammation or irritation that can be caused by
bacteria, viruses or mycoplasma organisms. Internal parasites living in the pig’s lungs and the pig
breathing excessive amounts of dust can also cause pneumonia. Stress is often an important factor in
respiratory diseases such as pneumonia because stress lowers the pig’s defenses against
pneumonia-causing organisms. The important thing I learned is to not cause my pig any stress if I can
help it.
Unacceptable example:
I learned what causes pneumonia in pigs. (You need to give more detail – give examples.)
Project Animal(s) Information:
 Fill in the information requested about your project animal(s). If you do not have 2 of the same
specie, check the box as shown on the report.
Average Daily Gain (ADG)
 You MUST fill this out for 2 different time periods.
The first ADG is for the time period from when
you got your market animal and about half-way point in the project. It MUST BE done by May 31st and
in your book when you turn it in at your June Meeting. The second ADG is for the overall time period
from the starting date through the day you weigh-in at the fair (AKA the Junior Livestock Show)..
This section must be completed and filled in BEFORE you bring in your book after the Jr. Livestock
Show.
Monthly Management Log:
 This is not optional. It must be filled out. You only need to write a summary for the entire month.
Record important events and changes you make.
Acceptable Example:
I weighed my pig once a week this month so that I could figure out the average daily gain. I found that my
pig was gaining too much weight too soon. I decreased the amount of feed by ½ pound per day and
increased walking by 10 minutes per day.
Unacceptable Example:
Changed feed and exercise.
Expenses:
Major Change - You must keep track of all your expense for 2 different time periods. You will be summarizing most of
the expenses and not listing each individual time you bought feed, etc. There are now 2 lines for Name of feed and the
info for that particular feed, as many of you change feed during your project as your animal grows. You do need to keep
your receipts, etc., but they DO NOT go in the book. You will ALL list your expenses through May 31st on page 6. On
page 7 you will list expenses that occurred on or after June 1st through the Jr. Livestock Show. Follow the directions on
the form, and be sure to complete the profit and loss statement. After the show, you MUST update your record book,
including the market form and the PDR to include any placings or awards you received during the show. This needs to be
done BEFORE you bring your book in to pick up your proceeds check.
 Record the purchase price of your animal. If you started with an animal that you raised from a
breeding project, use average going price for a 4-H market animal as the value (purchase price).
 Keep track of all the feed you use. You need to know the name of the feed used, how many pounds
in sack, how many sacks and the cost of each. You summarize this on the Expense page. If you use
hay, record how many bales used. List any other feed you may have used.
 Keep track of Veterinarian fees and any medication and summarize on the Expense Page.
 List any equipment and supplies you bought this year. First year members will need to list the cost
of the pen they are using, feeders, waterers, etc. If you are using the 4-H Farm, list how much you
had to pay to use it ($75.00 first year, $25.00 each successive year for each animal you keep there).
 If you have no expenses for a line item shown, show as: “-0-”. This will tell the reader that you had
no expenses in this category and that you did not skip the box by mistake.
 List any other expenses you had that are not shown in items 1-5 in Miscellaneous Expenses.
 Total your expenses and show total amount on project summary on page 7 in the space provided.
 List entry fees for the Jr. Livestock Show on page 7.
Income & Project Summary:
 It has a minor change to include the 2 different expense amounts. Bring it up to date after the show
and complete your profit and loss statement.
Expression Page:
 Use any art medium, including photographs if you write captions for them, to “illustrate your
project.” Be creative!
Additional Photographs:
 You may add up to 2 pages of photographs per project. These will go behind your expression page.
Be sure to include captions for the pictures.
Ribbons, awards, certificates, etc:
 All awards that you receive regarding your market animal project go in the “4-H Extras” section of
the book.
 This section follows the last project report form for current year.
 This section must have a “tab” clearly marked “4-H Extras”
