Foreword
FOREWARD
On behalf of the Management Committee I present the 55th Annual Report and
Financial Statement for your consideration and approval.
Lifesaving is the name and Lifesaving is the game, and Northcliffe Surf Life Saving
Club is up to the ears in it.
The patrolling members can be justifiably proud of having fulfilled the Club’s
Charter to patrol Northcliffe Beach. Reserves have been made, preventative
actions have been taken and valued assistance in first aid and marine stinger
treatment given to the people using this beach. No lives lost on this patrolled
beach.
Credit goes to our Club Captain, Col Mitchell and his deputy, Craig Clarke, the
Patrol Captains and the Life Saving Committee chaired by John Gorely. All have
played a part in this professional team.
Letters of commendation for actions taken have been received by the Club
throughout the season: from Ron Rankin, President of Surf Life Saving
Queensland - “Congratulations for efficient and prompt actions of administering
resuscitation skills and knowledge in saving a man’s life at Northcliffe on Sunday,
25th November 2001”.
Congratulations and appreciation from the President of SLSQ and Club Captain of
Broadbeach SLSC – “for upholding the ideals of surf life saving” when Northcliffe
provided assistance with patrols at Broadbeach on Christmas Day.
From the President of Surfers Paradise SLSC “extending his gratitude and thanks
to Northcliffe members who attended and assisted the mass rescue on Surfers
Paradise Beach on Good Friday, 29th March 2002.
It is a two-way street for co-operation in that Northcliffe thanks the members of
Surfers Paradise SLSC and Broadbeach SLSC who assisted with our patrol
problem on 20th April 2002.
In the International Year of Volunteers 2001, eighteen members of Northcliffe
SLSC were nominated for and received awards for their voluntary service to Surf
Life Saving.
Nine members of Northcliffe SLSC were nominated for and received the
International Life Saving Federation “Citation of Merit for his/her devotion to the
cause of the saving of life in the aquatic environment”.
For the second year we entered a team in the National Patrol Competition, starting
at Branch level, then State and Australian Championships with excellent results.
Hayley Cahill is the Australian Female Champion Lifesaver for the second year and
Champion Male Lifesaver, Brett Dowker a Silver Medal and Drew Moffrey a Bronze
Medal.
Under the guidance of Scott Unicomb, the Australian Surf Patrol Champions –
Gold Medal Winners – were: Scott Unicomb, Brett Dowker, Hayley Cahill, Drew
Moffrey, Trent Rowe and Damien Moffrey.
Our President of Surf Sports, Noel Kolkka, and the Surf Sports Committee can be
proud of this years results, which are listed in details later in this report. In short,
the overall point score results were :
Senior Club
Masters
Juniors
- Equal Second
- First
- Fourth in Queensland
On behalf of the competitors, thank you to all our members who officiated at both
the Queensland and Australian Championships, together with the IRB crew
members and masseur, Neil Mylott. As our competition team grows in numbers so
will our required number of officials. Recruiting new officials will be a priority for
next season.
Having a successful team on our beach and in competition just does not happen by
accident. Congratulations to the Officer Bearers, the Coaches, Instructors, Team
Managers, Surf Life Saving and Surf Sports Committees, together with the
Supporters Club and the Club Sponsors.
Finally to the people who drive the system and physically do the work – General
Manager, Brian; Manager Life Saving & Surf Sports, John; Administrative
Assistant, Maureen; Junior Development Officer, Luke; and Registrar, Karyn – your
contributions are much appreciated.

PRESIDENTS REPORT
Well, what a great year at Northcliffe! We should all feel very proud of the many
achievements our members have made during the season. The Club has grown in
all areas of our Life Saving services under the leadership of John Gorely, Col
Mitchell, Craig Clarke and the Life Saving Committee and most importantly no lives
have been lost at our beach and the much needed community service and
professional aptitude of our members remains the cornerstone of our existence at
Northcliffe.
Northcliffe has always provided much more than just a patrolled beach for the
public and much more than just a Surf Club for its members and patrons. The
Management of Northcliffe have always strived to provide our members and
patrons with modern facilities to perform their duties and responsibilities. In fulfilling
these aims we have established a sound foundation for the future of Northcliffe and
its members for many years to come. The Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Supporters
Club has provided the Surf Club with substantial funds over many years, so we can
provide the level of service that we do.
The Supporters Club Management Committee has always understood and
appreciated the Surf Club’s policy of future development of the Club and its
members, and has always been there to support us. I would like to take this
opportunity on behalf of all our members to sincerely thank Mike Deane and his
committee for their much-needed support over many years.
Our Surf Sports under the direction of Norm Lewis, Noel Kolkka, John Ogilvie and
the Surf Sports Committee experienced great results from all our members during
the season culminating with the Australian and World Championships. All our
members that competed for our Club did so in a sportsmanlike attitude making
them all worthy of being called Champions. In line with the Club’s policy of constant
progression, we have increased the quality and duration of our coaching program
under the direction of Brett & Ty Dowker. Brett and Ty, together with other
professional coaches provide a well-balanced program to all members of
Northcliffe. I must make special mention of our Surf Rescue section who, under the
leadership of Scott Unicomb, won the Queensland and Australian Champion Patrol
Team events with many other placings in the Champion Life Saver events, most
notably, Hayley Cahill winning back to back the Female Champion Life Saver event
at the Australian Championships.
The future of Northcliffe, our Junior Activities (Nippers) had another successful
year under the leadership of Stephen Fry, Karyn Wood and the Junior Activities
Committee. The Committee and other supporters and volunteers have guided our
members through another year of enjoyment and most importantly, a year of
learning skills that will develop them into adult surf life savers in the near future.
We thank all those involved and hope you remain involved in Northcliffe.
Each season, a small number of members volunteer to take on positions of office
on the Club’s various committees. These members donate their time and energy
and are responsible for the direction of the Club. I would like to thank all members
who have sat on various committees during the season and hope you continue to
take an active role in the future development of Northcliffe.
The day to day operations of Northcliffe represent a daunting task. Our staff, under
the leadership of our General Manager Brian Parker, perform their daily tasks in a
professional and efficient manner. On behalf of the Club I would like to thank all our
staff for their dedication to Northcliffe and for the many hours that they contribute to
the Club outside of their normal work hours. Thanks to Brian Parker, John Ogilvie,
Maureen Gorely, Luke Richmond, Fiona Mahoney, Ricky Cole and all the
Supporters Club Staff for their constant support. A special thanks to Brian Parker,
who is responsible for both Clubs, and who contributes so much to the
development of Northcliffe and who continually provides the passion and
enthusiasm that is required of a club as large and progressive as ours.
On behalf of the Club, may I extend our sincere appreciation to Laurent and Jenni
St Jacques and all their staff at Le Bistro for their continued support of the Club
and for the professional standard of service they provide to our members and
patrons.
Northcliffe is proud to be associated with many companies and individuals that
support our Club financially each year. We sincerely thank them for their most
valued support and hope they continue their association with Northcliffe.
I would like to make special mention of and sincerely thank our Patron, Terry
Jackman, for his time, energy, passion and irrevocable dedication to the success of
Northcliffe.
On a personal note, I wish to thank my wife, Michelle, for her support and
understanding throughout the past season and for her continued loyalty to myself
in my position at the Club.
I hope you have all enjoyed the past season at Northcliffe and I look forward to
your continued association with Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club.

President
GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT
It is with pleasure that I present my 8th report as Manager of the Surf Club
Northcliffe. We leave the season in a very enviable position; fatality free,
competitively strong, debt free and exciting prospects ahead.
In an environment where the actions of a good samaritan are at grave risk of
becoming extinct thanks to public liability pressures, our patrolling members have
again performed credibly ensuring Northcliffe beach was safe during their watch.
Special thanks must be given to our Patrol Captains who take on the responsibility
of being in charge of the safety of the public at our beach.
The most obvious test of a Surf Club’s depth and strength is in its competition
results and again Northcliffe has excelled. The Masters have lead the charge
winning both State and Australian point scores. In Open competition the Club
maintained its top 2 spot at the Australian titles and our juniors have improved 2
spots to 4th at their State Championships. This season was also a World Titles
year and our team performed admirably to finish 6th overall with many outstanding
individual results. Much of the credit for our Clubs all round strength goes to our
coaching staff. Thank you to all coaches from Xact, the boat section and board
riding for your dedication in helping our athletes reach their potential.
Financially the Club has again operated well within its capacity resulting in an
Operating Profit of $252,499. Much of this profit has been retained as a deposit on
the Clubs next big venture. Season 2001/02 saw the Club commence the year with
a debt of $65,110 thanks to a strong commitment to reducing our debt over the
previous three seasons. This figure was easily repaid this year leaving the Club in
an enviable position of being debt free. Obviously much of the credit goes to the
donations from the Northcliffe Supporters Club which this season totalled
$717,000. To this end we must thank the committee, staff and members of the
Supporters Club for such a great result. Thank you also goes to the local and state
government, our sponsors and the many supporters of our Club for their ongoing
commitment. It is significant to note that the Surf Club topped the $1,000,000 mark
in income for the first time in its history making the administration of the Club’s
finances a very important role and one which requires constant management by
both office bearers and staff alike.
As we look to the future of the Club we have received all necessary Club approvals
for a major renovation to the Club house and its facilities. The purpose of the
proposed works is to continue to remain competitive in the hospitality industry and
to remain largely financially independent. The scope of works approved will
enhance the facilities of both the Surf Club and Supporters Club and take our
facility to a new level of service to our many members and guests. This does come
at considerable expense and we as a Club are about to enter into a level of debt
much higher than ever before. However in the opinion of independent consultants,
our bank manager, our staff, the various committees and the members in general,
we are taking on a challenge that is well within our control and the potential
benefits will be well worth the risk.
I certainly welcome the challenge of the future and am confident that at this time
next year we will be reporting on an incredible success story and the continued
growth of our great Club.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT
Captains Report
Firstly and foremost I would like to sincerely thank every member who contributed
to another successful patrolling season on the Northcliffe Beach. It was certainly a
very busy season with members not only ensuring the safety of the bathing public
at Northcliffe but also assisting adjacent clubs in numerous rescues and patrols
and support services.
The plans devised in the off-season constantly proved fruitful. Our strategy of
consolidating the number of patrol groups proved successful and was evidenced
by improved patrol coverage and even distribution of experienced members. Club
Patrol Inspections continued this season and were
conducted by John Gorely and Craig Clarke. These inspections served to maintain
the high standard of our beach patrols in terms of skills and knowledge of members
and correct beach set-up. Thank you John and Craig.
Congratulations to Patrol No. 2 for achieving the highest combined score for the
inspections.
I would like to congratulate all members who gained Awards this season which not
only contributes to their own personal development but also complements the skills
and experience available on our beach. Thank you to our Chief Instructor, Chris
Redler, and his small team of dedicated Instructors for providing the opportunity for
members to gain Awards. While there was an increase in the number of Instructors
assisting Chris this season, I would still encourage any interested members to help
Chris whenever possible – we all have something to contribute.
As announced at the Annual Dinner Damien Moffrey, Jason Brunt, Lauren Hinds,
Sidney Bastos, David Page and myself with Chris Redler as Team Manager won
the Northcliffe Patrol Incentive Scheme this season. Congratulations to these
inspiring members who led the way not only in patrol attendance but also in
winning a trip to New Zealand.
It was great to see so many members volunteering for special events including the
House-to-House collections, Sportsman’s Luncheon and Christmas Day Patrols.
Thank you for your generous positive contribution.
Finally, a special mention for those people who have devoted endless hours to
ensure the continued excellence of Northcliffe’s patrols :
• Patrol Captains and Patrolling Members
• Craig Clarke (Vice Captain)
• Chris Redler (Chief Instructor) and Instructors
• Lifesaving Committee
• Management Committee
• Di Kingston (Club Supervisor)
• John Ogilvie, Maureen & Brian
Thank you for making Northcliffe a fantastic Club and I look forward to your
continued involvement next season.

CHIEF INSTRUCTORS REPORT
This season progressed quite smoothly with 162 awards being issued. The time
and effort put in by Instructors is always appreciated by the candidates and myself.
The rewards are the relieved looks on faces of those who passed the course.
The Awards received through the 2001/2002 season are as follows :-

Bronze Medallion
Surf Rescue Certificates
Senior First Aid Certificate
Advanced Resus Certificate
Resuscitation Certificate

Silver Medallion – IRB Driver
Defibrillator Certificate
It is always pleasing to receive phone calls from people wanting to train for the
Bronze Medallion especially when they say, “I want to do some voluntary
community work”. We must never forget why we are members of the surf lifesaving
movement. To protect swimmers and help in emergencies are qualities we pride
ourselves on.
Thank you to all those Instructors who helped out during the season and welcome
to those members who became Instructors this year. Without your support and
commitment, it would be impossible to run the various awards throughout the
season.
I would also like to thank Di Kingston, our Club Supervisor, her husband Peter and
all the other South Coast Examiners who give up much of their time to ensure we
produce members with high qualifications. Maureen and Karyn, from our office,
also do a great job.
To be able to provide the community with such a quality service, we must continue
to learn, update and upgrade our skills. I encourage all members of our club to
update and upgrade their awards this winter in time for next season. Keep an eye
on the newsletter for further information.
See you all next season!

CLUB HOUSE DIRECTORS REPORT
Great to see we have all survived another good season at Northcliffe. Looks like
we will have to survive another renovation as well. The benefits of this one should
be worth the wait, with addition of a lift and some much needed improvements to
the entry and facilities.
TIM BURGESS
Club House Director
COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERS REPORT
Despite completing our eleventh 100% on air season, our expenses have been
well above average due to the replacement of two radios that were ‘drowned’ and
in addition, two IRB harnesses were purchased to replace well worn twelve year
old originals.
Radio Operator Certificate candidates totaled 44 this season and compares with 23
last year. A great improvement that must be maintained in order that we have
competent radio operators on patrol.
Costs associated with radios and radio gear amounted to $2,014 and compares
with $564 last year.
Tim Burgess and John Gorely again kept an eye on radios in my absence and
have received my thanks.
Hours at Gold Coast Command were 73.5 and I officiated at 14 carnivals as
Carnival Radio Control Officer.
DAVID IRVINE
Communications Officer
MARINE STINGER OFFICERS REPORT
Apart from one or two short periods, there have been few bluebottles about this
season and only 1 swimmer has had a bad reaction. I am still encouraging Patrol
Captains to indicate what type, if any, stingers are observed on their patrols. This
should include blubbers etc. even though no person is stung.
HELEN IRVINE
Marine Stinger Officer
FIRST AID OFFICERS REPORT
There have been no major problems in maintaining the First Aid Room in good
condition. Thanks are due to Helen Irvine for doing the job in my absence for
carnivals away from the Coast as well as teaching the Emergency Care
components to the Bronze candidates.
It is marvellous to have such good patrol teams that check the airbag resuscitators
before - and clean the room after their patrols. Thankfully we only have had to
apply resuscitation once with a successful outcome this year. Congratulations to
those rescuers and resuscitators, who can be very proud of themselves for their
prompt and expert conduct.
Several First Aid 3-yearly Refreshers as well as new qualifiers have successfully
gone through with Helen this year and I would like to advise those First Aid
Qualified members to gain experience by stepping forward and perform duties on
the beach during the Junior and Senior Carnivals on the Coast.
ELLY VAN VLIET
First Aid Officer
IRB CAPTAINS REPORT
The season 2001/2002 has been another successful year for the Northcliffe SLSC,
providing one of the safest beaches on the coast.
There have been a few improvements this year the largest being a third motor
being our new Yamaha Surf. I also feel there has been an improvement in the
reliability of the boats through regular maintenance. A large contribution to this
improvement has been the hard work of Stuart Jackson who has proven to be a
great asset to the Club.
Purchases this year have included the new fuel storage unit, jerry cans and tools
that have all helped to provide a safer more reliable IRB Section.
With the added pressure that State Centre has applied for us to provide IRB’s at all
major carnivals my recommendations for the upcoming season are for the upgrade
of our old IRB and the purchase of a third IRB to help cope with these added
responsibilities and still provide the high standard of beach patrols which are
expected.
ADAM McKINNON
IRB Captain
BOAT CAPTAINS REPORT
This years rowing season rolled along with relative success. The year saw an
addition to the crews with the formation of an Under 19 crew. With the sale of a
surfboat and the arrival of a new Miles Surfboat and I am pleased to report all three
crews were fully sponsored for the ensuing calendar year. Sponsors include:
A Grade:
Reserve Grade:
U / 19:
Prime Television
Quinn Liquor
Lindores
Thanks must once again go to Tony Joseph, for his continuing support to the
Northcliffe Boat Section.
A special thanks to Claude and Whoopsie for taking the boat again to Sydney, and
Ray and Judy Jones for the looking after us at Coffs Harbour.
During the season all crews preformed strongly and with current establishment we
can only go from strength to strength.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the crews and the Surf Club
Committee for their support and wish you all every success next season.
I would also like to thank Peninsular Beachside Apartments, managed by Paradise
Resorts, for allowing us to park the Juniors’ surf boat on their premises, and the
Management of The Regent Apartments of Aubrey Street, Surfers Paradise for
housing the Seniors’ surf boat. It is much appreciated.

55TH ANNUAL DINNER & PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES
55th Annual Dinner & Presentation of Trophies
Saturday, 1st June saw the staging of the 55th Annual Dinner & Presentation of
Trophies at the Northcliffe Club House. Some 230 guests dined on an excellent

VICE PRESIDENT – LIFE SAVING’S REPORT
I would like to thank all Active Members who have done patrols this year on their
fine effort of keeping our beach safe. A special ‘thank you’ to the Life Saving
Committee consisting of Col Mitchell, Craig Clarke, Chris Redler, Elly Van Vliet,
David & Helen Irvine, Adam McKinnon and also John Ogilvie and Maureen for all
their help.
The new Patrol Trailer has been a great help in doing our community service on
the beach. In the near future we hope to upgrade some of our equipment, i.e. IRB
and motors, Rescue Boards, etc. I hope to see you all on patrol next season.
I would like to congratulate Scott Bradford’s patrol members for winning the title of
best Patrol over the season – excellent job – and also to congratulate the members
who won the Patrol Incentive Scheme competition.
JOHN GORELY
Vice President – Life Saving
VICE PRESIDENT – SURF SPORT’S REPORT
Another outstanding competitive season has almost come to an end. Although
enjoying much success in individual and team events at Aussie Titles, on some
occasions, I feel that lady luck turned her back on us.
Congratulations to those who won medals, and just as important, all those athletes
who competed under the maroon star. "Good work team".
These results couldn't be achieved without the driving force and guidance of XACT
Coaching. A sincere thank you to all Coaching Staff, Team Managers, Chris Harris
(Open) and Haydon Stokes (Masters), Surf carnival officials and all other
volunteers responsible for keeping the positive momentum alive at Northcliffe.
At the time of writing, our World Titles Team are about to depart for Daytona
Beach, Florida with the incredible depth of talent and experience of team members.
I am sure we can expect exciting results.
Thank you also to all Surf Sports Committee members - Damien Moffrey, Hayley
Cahill, Dick Clements, Chris Harris, Norm Lewis, Paul Wotherspoon and John
Ogilvie. These guys give hours of their own time behind the scenes, making
decisions that ultimately lead us in the right direction towards our competitive
goals.
Let’s keep Northcliffe riding on the continuous wave of success.
NOEL KOLKKA
Vice President - Surf Sports
MANAGER LIFE SAVING & SURF SPORTS’ REPORT
No doubt we will look back on the season just passed and feel all has progressed
as planned.
The Surf Sports section held its own in this arena by finishing second overall in the
points score at the national level. The drive by our Junior Development Group in
Luke Richmond, Sue Walton and Jason Brunt has seen our numbers increase and
how pleasing is it to see this at carnivals.
As is all clubs aim, Northcliffe were fatality free for the season, but officials in
Lifesaving must be concerned with all the litigation that is raring its head and
hopefully the volunteer movement will not fall foul of this problem. Our patrols must
be seen to fulfill our duties to the surfing public as the set guidelines and should not
have any problems As mentioned in the Surf Sports area, our Juniors must be our
priority within the club if we are to maintain our members in the seasons to come.
“Total Club” involvement in the Sydney Trip and the weekend at Broken Heads as
such must be the carrot to hold members within the Club.
As always, praise must go to all sub committees and the efforts of Karyn, Luke and
Maureen have made life a lot easier for all concerned.
JOHN (‘Oges’) OGILVIE
Manager Life Saving & Surf Sports
TEAM MANAGERS’ REPORT
Another season has drawn to a close and as I write this report our athletes are
about to embark on another challenge of significant proportions. In this I mean the
“World Surf Life Saving Championships – Florida USA”. Not having had time to
wash and iron my competition cap and swimmers (you do, do that don’t you??)
after the Australian Championships, it seems that the season just keeps getting
longer. Some of our athletes travelling to the USA have been hard at it since this
time last year without a break.
To fill you all in on our season this year, although not as heavier laden with Gold
Medals, the quality was certainly as good if not better right throughout our whole
competition team.
My personal congratulations must go to Brett and Ty Dowker for their successes in
achieving the levels of fitness and skill within our ranks. It is very noticeable, on a
weekly basis that the training programs are most positively assisting with our
younger members by way of their obvious eagerness to attend training, carnivals
and generally get passionate about having a go and “being the best they can be”.
To our Australian Champions;
GOLD MEDALLISTS
Mark Williams Restricted Surf Race – (a fist in the air for gold again)
Hayley Cahill
Champion Life Saver – (what a great habit forming)
Jade Kolkka
Under 19 Womens Board Riding – (another Kolkka Gold)
and the “A Team” Champion Patrol Gurus … Coach - Scott Unicomb, Drew
Moffrey, Brett Dowker, Damian Moffrey, Trent Rowe and Hayley Cahill – ( a win of
massive proportions and most certainly not an upset)
SILVER MEDALLISTS
Reen Corbett
Womens Surf Race – (forever realiable on quality efforts)
Hayley Bateup
Womens Board – (always up near the front)
Paul Wotherspoon
Open Mens Board – (very well overdue, this one)
Brett Dowker
Champion Lifesaver – (history in the making here)
Nathan Baggaley
Mens Ski – (you have proved to us all, he is beatable)
Mens Taplin Relay Team
Paul Wotherspoon, Ty Dowker, Luke Richmond,
Nathan Baggaley, Nick Crilly, Mark Williams Unfortunately, this year, it was the
best team out of luck, not a wave in sight, and everyone knew it!!
BRONZE MEDALLISTS
Reen Corbett
Womens Board – (and again, reliability of quality efforts)
Drew Moffrey
Champion Lifesaver – (ski paddlers do excel everywhere!)
Luke Richmond Open Ironman – (there is even more, better things to come)
U/19 Mens Surf Team Brendan Capell, Tom McGregor, Michael Barratt, Peter
Gajda – (some quality new faces here!!)
Renee Gajda
U/16 Womans Surf Race – (straight from the Open Surf)
The above results and most certainly not forgetting, the huge number of finalists
we had in many events, in what were tricky conditions.
You all assisted in getting “The Cliffe” into second position overall on that club
championship point score. Thank you…Thank you…Thank you!
Once again this year for myself has been a memorable one in all facets and in
some cases a little bit tiring. But the job is always made so much easier with the
invisible ones. In that, I mean, the Team Management members who make it all
happen with no big fuss.
Dick Clements – the best right hand man anyone could want. Sue Walton – once
again a huge thank you, words never seem enough. Jason Brunt – the effort you
have done this year was certainly above and beyond the call, not just on the
beach, but atmosphere you created when times were stressful was certainly well
timed if nothing else. A personal thank you from myself and the World Titles Team
on the magnificent job you did with the raffle, which raised over $1300. Thanks
Heaps Jason. Karyn Wood – a thankless job that not everyone knows you spend
so much time with our carnival entries hours of invisible work which gets the
competitors racing at each carnival. Brian Hurley – a personal thankyou Brian, for a
section that is each year gaining more and more momentum, quality athletes and
solid results. Well done to you all!! John Ogilvie – a walking encyclopedia on all the
rules and a solid mover in all the right directions….always!! Luke Richmond – your
work this year with your “Young Guns” program was phenomenal. What a great
role model for our youngies to look up to. Maureen Gorely – “always on the phone”
and “always on the computer” and most of the time it was for me. So I’m the guilty
one not Mausy!! I said it last year and I’ll say it again Maureen, doesn’t know what
no means or when to say it – Thank God!! The Club Professional Staff “in the bar
and the bistro” – mine and the athletes thanks go out to you all for the beer always
being cold and the food platters large, after those home town carnival get
togethers. Our Officials – every year I thank you and it never seems enough. This
year saw quite a few new faces as well and believe me that does certainly make
everyone’s day at the races less stressful. Our IRB Drivers and Crewman – To
Stuart and your team of helpers, guys and girls, my heartfelt thanks to you all. I
know it is not a real pleasant job on some days, in the rain, wind and big seas and
especially when the fish are not biting.
As you can see fellow members, the above people, (and it’s a big list) are what
helps to put our team of competitors on the beach at carnivals each week and I’m
sure you’ll agree that these days now it is a very big concern for all of those
involved.
Our sport has reached new levels and is getting bigger as the years roll on. We do
not have an off period in our season any more. It’s more like a couple of weeks to
take our breath and go again.
Within the position of Team Manager there are even more people that need to be
thanked, they are the wife’s, husbands, partners, girlfriends and boyfriends. Who
put up with the late midweek meetings, early arrivals at the beach, late departures
from the beach and much, much more.
On behalf of everyone mentioned in this report we say thank you for dealing with it
the patient way you have.
See you all in the next few weeks!!!
CHRIS “Harro” HARRIS
Team Manager
MASTERS TEAM MANAGERS REPORT
Once again this year, the Masters were successful in winning all championships,
namely the South Coast Branch Champion Club; Queensland Champion Club; and
finally, but certainly not least, the Australian Champion Club. The wins this year
were by record amounts and congratulations to all Masters who competed in these
championships.
Furthermore, the Club was successful in winning the inaugural XXXX Yalumba
Shield being for aggregated points over four different carnivals. Congratulations
again.
As in previous Annual Reports, I believe we should continue to push to have new
members to join, especially female members. When we look at other clubs we
certainly are lacking in numbers in female competitors, although we definitely have
the quality.
Best wishes to Norm Lewis, Allan Nicholls and Chris Harris for the World Masters
Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida USA – bring back some gold, boys!
The planned get-together for Masters competitors and their spouses will probably
now take place in July/August 2002 to accommodate our overseas competitors
being able to compete and return home. Everyone will be fully informed of details
when available.
Although not in my domain, it would be remiss of me and all Masters to fail to
congratulate our Australian Champion Patrol Team and the individual medallists in
the Australian Champion Life Saver Competition, Hayley Cahill (Gold), “Bear”
Dowker (Silver), and Drew Moffrey (Bronze) – Well done and well done Scott
Unicomb (Coach).
Special thanks to my wife, Robyn, and to Maureen, Oges, and Norm for their
assistance throughout the year, and a very special thank you to my secretary
Janette, whom I am sure you will all agree, really puts together the results and
other computer printed material most effectively. See you all again next season.

The end of another surf season and a new one will soon be upon us. As we look
back on the 2001/2002 season I think we all should be pleased with the way
Nippers has gone, especially in a number of areas. The first would have to be the
way our juniors have taken to nipper training. An example would have to be
Saturday morning board training - it has reached staggering numbers.
Competition is another area in which the Club is starting to move in the right
direction, with some great results at carnivals this year and some new and exciting
plans for the 2002/2003 season. Northcliffe will continue to improve and grow, with
an equal balance of competitive and social members. The State Titles were held at
Emu Park on the 5th & 6th of April 2002 and the competitors did the Club very
proud with some wonderful efforts and we have some budding champions of the
future. Northcliffe ended up 4th in the point score - two places better than 2001. As
Team Manager of the under 11`s to under 14`s – not only did they perform well on
the beach but their behaviour was first class.
Another area in which the junior club has excelled this season is Water Safety. To
all those who gained their Water Safety Certificate or continued on from last year,
on behalf of the Club and the Nippers, we thank you.
Northcliffe has always been regarded as a family and social surf club and even
though we are heading down a more competitive road, we will never move away
from that basis. This season we have had some tremendous social weekends starting off with the Broken Head camp - if you were there you know what I am
talking about and if you missed it, don’t miss it next year.
Thanks must go to “ DRAKE “ for their generous sponsorship of the Junior Club
and we hope that next season we can look forward to their continued support.
Special mention goes to Jenny Miller for helping arrange that sponsorship.
We also must thank Dolphin Surf Craft for the donation of a nipper board for our
yearly raffle. Thanks Norm Lewis.
Congratulations must go to Meagen Nay, firstly for making the Queensland Junior
Surf Team and secondly, for winning both the Under 13 Ironmaiden and Under 13
Surf Race at the Interstate Titles at Bondi Beach in December 2001.
As you will see from the results at the major carnivals this season, Northcliffe has
some fantastic competitors, and achieved some great results, but missing from
these results are those members who had entered carnivals tried their hearts out
but didn’t quite make it. To those competitors, great effort and thank you for
competing for Northcliffe. Remember that “An athlete who does well in sport, does
one thing well - Prepares!“ Don’t wait until the season starts to begin your training.
We need to look out for potential members who can add a competitive value to our
current membership, runners, football club or swimming club would be logical
choices. Bring them down to the Club next season for a trial as a nipper.
Like every year we must thank the people who make Nippers happen on Saturday
and during the week. To the Junior Committee for their support and help during the
season, especially Karyn Wood and Di Burgess for all their help in the day to day
running of the Junior Activities.
To the Age Managers and their Assistants for the hard work and long days on the
beach each Saturday. Again to the Water Safety Officers thank you. To the
Carnival Officials for a great effort during the season. The canteen helpers and
anyone else who helped in the running of Nippers at the Club.
To Xact Coaching – Ty, Brett, Adam and Griffo for their brilliant coaching during the
season, and last, but not least, to John Ogilvie and the young Maureen Gorely for
putting up with the constant requests from myself to do things and helping with the
administration side of Nippers.
Best wishes for off-season and hope to see you soon.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT OFFICER’S REPORT
Well another season has passed and it is time to reflect on the past season.
2001/2002 saw a resurgence in the U16 area with increased numbers from the
year before.
A lot of credit must go to Sue Walton and Jason Brunt for this increase in numbers
as they have worked tirelessly for the Junior Development of the club.
The high light of the year for the Young Guns was the Sydney Trip. Fifteen U16 &
U19 members traveled to Sydney by bus to compete in the annual Australia Day
Carnivals. A wonderful time was had by all, with the Club wanting this to be an
annual event for the Young Guns. Special thanks must again go to Sue and Jason,
but also to Steve Hinds for accompanying the group.
In the competition area, we saw some promising young competitors come through
the ranks. Our U16 & U19 age groups have strengthened, with the U19s gaining a
medal at the Australians.
In saying this, there is still a lot of work to be done in order to develop our junior
ranks. With our current crop and the promising nippers coming through we have
the nucleus of what can become a force in the Junior ranks.
This year sees the end of my two-year traineeship with the Club. I would first of all
like to thank the Club for giving me this opportunity, which I have thoroughly
enjoyed. To Brian Parker and David Shields thank you for this opportunity.
Finally I would like to give a big thank you to Maureen and John for all the help that
they have given me. Without them the Club wouldn’t be as successful as it is, and
my job would have been that much more difficult.
To all the Young Guns I will still be involved in the development of juniors and hope
to see you develop into fine young adults.

NORTHCLIFFE OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB REPORT
Here we go again - another Outrigger Season. Our season ends this year with the
Australian National Titles being held in August. Great to see our Open Men back at
training and racing. Welcome back!!!! and welcome to our new paddlers!!!!! We
also have this year a lot of new paddlers from Tweed - thanks to Harro.
The Club continues to be in a strong financial state with an ongoing program of
replacement and maintenance of Club craft.
We again hosted, this year, the Southern Blue Gold Coast Cup Race which started
at Greenmount - went down to Cook Island and then back up the coast through the
Southport Seaway and finished at Southport VMR. We would like to thank our
Sponsors of this event - Goldsteins Bakery, Sobar Bar and Nightclub, Bundaberg
Rum, Outrigger Sun City Resort, Julbo Extreme Eyewear, Surfers Paradise
Scaffolding, Southern Blue, Typhoon Outrigger Products. For the first time we had
two international teams compete in this race and had our biggest field ever of 43
crews. A very special ‘thanks’ to Bryan Collister and his committee for the great
effort in organising this event. Bryan has organised this race for the last 6 years
(DON’T GO!!!!!).
The Club continues to grow from strength to strength. We have over 100 members
this year with a good influx of new paddlers and don’t forget the die hards. A very
special thanks to my committee and paddlers. Go Hard!!!!! Party Hard!!!!!

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION REPORT
It is with pleasure that I present the report on behalf of the Northcliffe Surf Life
Saving Supporters Association Inc. for the 2001/02 season. The Supporters Club
has again been the primary funding body for the Surf Club this year with donations
totalling $717,000. This figure represents 71% of the total income for the Surf Club.
The Supporters Club has traded well through a year which has seen a lot of
legislative changes in the liquor and gaming industry. Changes to the Liquor Act
has enabled some loosening of the previously restrictive Club license conditions
such as visitor eligibility and take away limits. The responsible gaming initiatives
has seen the abolition of $50 and $100 notes in gaming machines and other
cosmetic and administrative changes. More recently new non-smoking laws have
been introduced limiting smoking within licensed venues.
The Sportsmans Lunch was again a highlight for the Supporters Club with a full
house of 350 guests in attendance. Guest speakers included Rod Macqueen and
Jason Ackermanis, the MC job was of course performed by John Garfield. The
event has resulted in over $40,000 funds raised. Thank you to the event organizers
and sponsors particularly Peter McLean and Tony Freestone. A highlight of the day
is the unveiling of the bar name for the following 12 months. This years recipient
was Australian Rugby Union boss, John O’Neill, a long time supporter of Northcliffe
and a worthy winner of this award.
The Supporters Club was represented at the Surf Club’s Annual Dinner where the
Ken Irvine memorial trophy for best Supporters Club member was presented. Ron
Youles was this year’s winner for his many years of support and contribution to
Northcliffe.
Of course much of the credit for the smooth running of the Supporters Club is due
to the hard working staff both in administration and operations. Thank you to all
staff for the commitment shown whilst on duty. I would also like to thank General
Manager Brian Parker and the Management Committee personnel for their
guidance throughout the year. I would also like to thank Jenni and Laurent our
caterers for another year of quality provision of meals at the Club.
As we now turn to the renovations and the upgrading of our facilities we look
forward to the challenges that lay ahead. The Supporters Club is happy to endorse
the plans and finance commitment as proposed by the Surf Club and we are
confident that the resultant increase of trade will return a better profitability and
more Surf Club support.
I am sure I speak on behalf of all members of the Supporters Club when I
congratulate the Surf Club on such a successful season and our Club remains
committed to continue to provide financial support for such a worthy cause.

VICE PRESIDENT FINANCE REPORT
It is with pleasure that I again present the financial report for the 2001/02 season.
As usual I must firstly pay tribute to those involved in the administration and
formulation of the Clubs finance records especially staff members Fiona Mahoney
and Brian Parker and Auditors Franich Crow Oberg.
This year saw the Club reach a milestone of sorts in the elimination of its debt from
our last renovation. With only $59,610 outstanding at the start of the year, due to 3
years of solid debt reduction, the balance was easily met fully repaying the loan
within 3 years of the 7 year term.
Income for the year topped the $1,000,000 mark for the first time in the Club’s
history due largely to a $717,000 injection from the Northcliffe Surf Life Saving
Supporters Assoc Inc. Tribute must therefore be paid to the committee, staff and
members of the Supporters Club for this tremendous effort. Other items of note
include almost $80,000 in donations and sponsorship and $30,000 in government
funding. Thank you to all those individuals and companies that have supported our
Club financially throughout the year. Thank you also to the many members who
have contributed in the many fundraising functions during the season.
The day to day running of the Club cost $754,510 (including depreciation of
$83,809), leaving an Operating Profit of $252,499 for the year. Much of this has
been retained as a deposit for an upcoming renovation to the Clubhouse and its
surrounds.
Congratulations to all again for another great financial result.
SCOTT BRADFORD

period, unless otherwise stated.

Statement by Committee
For the year ended 30 April 2002
The Committee has determined that the Club is not a reporting entity and
therefore, there is no requirement to apply Accounting Standards and other
mandatory professional reporting requirements (Urgent Issues Group Consensus
Views) in the preparation of these financial statements. The Committee has
determined that this special purpose financial report should be prepared in
accordance with the accounting policies outlined in Note 1 to the accounts. In the
opinion of the Committee of the Club:
1.
(a) The accompanying Profit and Loss account gives a true and fair view of
the profit of the Club for the financial year ended 30 April 2002.
(b) The accompanying balance sheet gives a true and fair view of the state of
affairs of the Club as at 30 April 2002.
2.
At the date of this statement, there are reasonable grounds to believe that
the Club will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due.
This statement is made in accordance with a resolution of the Committee at
Northcliffe.
Audit Report to the Members
Scope
We have audited the financial statements, being a special purpose financial report
for the year ended 30 April 2002 of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc.
The Committee is responsible for the financial statements and have determined
that the accounting policies used are consistent with the reporting requirements of
the Club and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members.
We have conducted an independent audit of the financial statements in order to
express an opinion as to whether the accounting policies used are appropriate to
the needs of the members. The financial statements have been prepared for
distribution to members. We disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any
reliance on this report or, on the financial statements prepared as a special
purpose financial report to which it relates, to any person other than the members,
or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.
Our audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards.
Our procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the
amounts and other disclosures in the financial statements, and significant
accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion
as to whether, in all material respects, the financial statements are presented fairly
in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial
statements. (These policies do not require the application of all Accounting
Standards and UIG Consensus Views).
The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed in the above basis.
Qualification
As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for the club to
maintain an effective system of the internal control over donations and other
fundraising activities until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly,
our audit in relation to fundraising was limited to amounts recorded.
Audit Opinion
In our opinion, except to the effect of such adjustments, if any, as might have been
determined to be necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualification
paragraph not existed, the financial statements present fairly, in accordance with
the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, the financial
position of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc. for the year ended 30 April 2002,
and the results of its operations for the year then ended.
