From Warner's HISTORY OF DAKOTA COUNTY, NEBRASKA. pub. 1893
HISTORY OF DAKOTA COUNTY
Dakota County was organized by an act of the first territorial legislature, March 7, 1855. This
was in response to a petition presented January 22, 1855, signed by J.D.M. CROCKWELL and thirtyone others.
By a treaty made with the Omaha Indians and proclaimed June 21, 1854, all their lands west of
the Missouri river except the Omaha Reservation, was ceded to the United States. This opened up
the land that was to become Dakota county for settlement. Before this date some early pioneers
crossed the Missouri to look the land over. Among whom were: John B. ARTEAUX, June 6, 1851;
Thos. L. GRIFFEY, in the fall of 1851; Gustave PECANT in 1852; Wm. H. JAMES, Leonard BATES and
Urn. L. MADDEN in 1853.
Among the early settlers in 1855 were: Henry REAM, who came 15 May 1855; Adam BENNER and Charles
ROULEAUX. Father Jermiah TRECY and his brother, John J. TRECY came from Dubuque, Iowa, 25 June
1855. They selected land where the colony of Irish from Dubuque, Iowa settled old St. Johns.
On 1 July 1855 George T. WOODS staked the first claim. Later Jacob H. HALLOCK, George T. WOODS
Charles RONLEAUX, Ray HARVEY, John SANUELS, John BAY and Robert G. ALEXANDER located claims. A
few days later came Chauncey A. HORR. On August 19, 1855 Jesse WIGLE, Spencer MOORE, Robert and
William PILGRIM and others came to Dakota county. Mr. WIGLE was the first white man to settle
here with his family. Others who came in 1855 were: Harlon BAIRD, Abraham HIRSCH, Benjamin
HICKS, Moses KREPS, Joseph BRANNAN, Squire DUTTON, William B. TAYLOR, Henry YOUNG, Gustave
PECAUT and George L. BOALS. .
EARLY TOWN OF DAKOTA COUNTY:
Omadi was situated on the west bank of the Missouri River about five miles south of Dakota City,
on a claim taken by Charles ROULEAUX. First settlers were Geo. T. WOODS, Chauncey A. HORR, and
Moses KREPS who built a saw mill. A. H. BAKER and Jacob H. HALLOCK soon joined them. Others were
Wm. CHENEY, Benjamin HICKS, John GALLAGHER, Robert ALEXANDER. Charles ROULEAUX erected the
second cabin and John BAY put together a long store building. In 1856 William C. McBEATH opened
up a store, Stephen DRAPER brought in a steam saw mill. A frame school was built and later moved
to just north of Thomas SMITH'S place. Abraham HIRSCH opened up the first hotel in 1856 and
Henry REAM soon had another hotel. Miss PUTMAN of Sioux City taught the first school in Omadi,
starting in April 1857. Maria PARSONS and Julia NASH were the next teachers. Dr. C. W. WILKINSON
taught school in 1858 in what was Urn. CHENEY'S old log barn which was later moved to Dakota
City by C. F. ELKHART. Among the pupils were Charles FORD, Michael KENNELLY, Marcellus and
Charles REAM and Mary REAM, who married U. C. McBEATH.

EARLY CHURCH HISTORY
Rev. RABEL came from Omaha and rode to various homes. A pastor also came from Chadron. The
members were baptized in the Niobrara river. John SCHULZ Sr. was responsible for starting this
first church, having lived in and near Omaha, where he was employed in a packing plant.; where
the church had been established. The native German language was still used by the
emigrants, and some of the minutes found in the records are written in German. The SCHULZ

home is approximately six miles south of Nenzel, NE. John SCHULZ filed on his homestead around
1900, and this was when the church began. The other members also lived in that area.
Some of this information came from Martha SCHULZ BENDSTAN who was about 19 years old at the time
of the reorganization, and from the families of Esther SCHULZ BLISS and Charley SCHULZ. The
latter two were born at this time or lived at home when the John SCHULZ family lived in and near
Omaha before coming to Cherry County to homestead.
HISTORY OF FARWELL, NE from Sherman Dam Dedication, June
1963 Howard, Co.
Farwell is located in Posen Precinct in Howard County. Early in 1887 the town of Posen (now
Farwell) began. In 1887 the Burlington RR built through Farwell. Mr. BURNS was the line's first
agent.
In 1892 the school was completed and Dist. 67 was formed, a Mr. DEHAYS was the first teacher.
School board: Chas. C. DOBRY, James LAND & Fred OLSEN. The Village of Farwell was incorporated
in 1895 and the post office & depot were named Farwell. However business conducted by the
Village Bd. used the name "Posen", which caused confusion as to the correct name, and as a
result in 1951 a petition was filed in Dist. Court requesting the name be designated as
Farweil.
First Village Bd. James LANG, Mayor; Chas C. DOBRY, Clerk; Ed LORKOWSKI, Treas.; Hugh HARVEY &
John HOFSETH, members.
St. Anthony Catholic Church was organized in 1877 about 2 mile south of Farwell, in 1924 it was
moved to Farwell. in 1925 a parochial school was built under supervision of Rev. Joseph
HINZSMANN. Farwell Lutheran Church was built in 1898, 1st minister was Rev. J. C. PETERSEN.

RETURN OF BIBLE
This is the story of a bible of Hanford Nelson SMITH, which was given to him by his wife
probably at the time they were married during the Civil War.
Hanford Nelson SMITH was born in Thompkins County, N. Y. 7 August 1832 and died 9 March 1916 in
St. Paul, NE. He served the 14th Wisconsin Inf. Reg. While on leave he was married in Thompkins
Co. N.Y. to Harriett GARRISON about Dec 1863.
His wife gave him a bible, which was lost, along with other possessions about 1864 or 1865. Some
how it fell into the hands of James Riley WHITE, who died in 1868. Later it was given to a niece
of Mr. WHITE's and an account was published in the Louisville Courier-Journal, a Ky paper on 1
March 1913. The account included the record of bith (sic) and deaths and names recorded in the
bible. A brother-in-law of Mr. SMITH, Jas. N. ROGERS of Indiana, saw the article in the paper
and recognized the Bible inscriptions and so the bible was returned to Mr. SMITH after some 48
or so years.
Entry on the fly leaf is : "Hanford and Hattie are forever separated by curel war. Hanford N.
SMITH from Hattie

BOOK REVIEW
PUBLISHED SOURCES ON TERRITORIAL NEBRASKA, An Essay and Bibliography by John Browning White.
Published by the Nebraska State Historical Society in 1956. Indexed. 261 pages. The book tells
of Territorial newspapers, naps which have been made, it basically covers the years 1854-1867.
Attention is directed to the nixed nature of some of the items in the bibliography. The
arrangement of the bibliography in each of the chapters is alphabetical under the name of the
author, or the originator, as in the case of an organization or agency of govornnent (sic). This
source could lead to much good local history and an insight to persons or organizations etc.
Much of the material has been published by the Nebraska State Historical Society. It includes
the names of many authors and perhaps others. If your ancestor had anything to do with Nebraska
history you might want to make a quick check of the index to see if he is included in this work.
Most of the works mentioned are available at the State Historical Society.

ROMAN CATHOLICS ON THE FRONTIER: SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA
Roman Catholic priests were not common on the Nebraska frontier. For scattered families, the
nearest priest might be two or three counties away. Missionary priests traveled to remote areas,
on occasion, but, to be married, many couples went to the priest. For this reason many Roman
Catholic couples were married in Red Willow County, where there was a full-time priest. The
couples came from Hitchcock. Dundy, Chase, Hayes and Frontier counties. So, if you can't find
the marriage records you need, you might try looking for them in the Red Willow County judge's
office. This same situation probably occurs in other parts of the state, so learn where the
nearest full-time priest was in the area. Also, there was no Roman Catholic cemetery at Trenton,
Hitchcock County, so many of the early Catholic burials took place in McCook. To show how
complicated things could be:
RACINE-ROACH
"John ROACH and Bertha RACINE cane to Trenton, (Hitchcock County,) Tuesday, expecting to be
married by Rev. J. J. LOUGHRAN, who was to be here that day to hold service. The Rev, gentleman,
however, failed to arrive. Nothing daunted, the young people went to McCook, Wednesday morning,
and then to Benkelman (Dundy County) where the priest had another appointment, and were married
by him on Thursday. They returned to Trenton on No. 150, and were guests of the Commercial until
their return home Friday morning. Father LOUGHRAN was filling an appointment at Minden and owing
to the introduction of the tn-weekly passenger-freight service he could not get a train to come
here, thus disappointing his congregation, many of whom had come for miles, It is not often that
people have to go on a wedding tour before they are married, but as Billy Shakespeare used to
say, "All's well that ends well." TRENTON REPUBLICAN, Fri., 8 July 1904.

1867 ---NEBRASKA--- 1967
My Dear Patricia, Phyllis and Pamla: Today our Native State of "Nebraska" is One Hundred
years old: I am writing this to remind you that you have far more than "passing interest
in the early pioneers of Hall County, Nebraska, since your Great Grandfather, William J. BURGER,
aged 20 yrs and your Great Grandmother, Martha Ann CREASON, aged 19 yrs were married in
Glenwood, IA, Thanksigiving (sic) Day, November 24, 1864.
Grandfather said: "After one week I left wife in Plattsmouth with my parents and I started to
homestead a claim off the Platte River south of a small settlement called Grand Island." I
planned to return for wife but winter set in early so I got lumber and spent the winter alone

The following verse I wrote for you to know something of their early life stories
with the Indians, Blizzards, Covered wagons, Grasshoppers, Buffalo, Mormans! Always be proud of
our "Pioneers"!
Mrs. (C.A.) Vinta Burger Harrell PENTON.
One Hundred years ago:
Were strong, brave, staunch and true,
When our sturdy pioneer prodded
For there was no place like Nebraska,
The Oxen and the Steer
One hundred years ago:
Mile on mile, without fear
Forded the rivers, trails they trod
Built homes of dirt and grassy sod.
Wandering Indians when on raid
They were there with help and aid.
They planted crops and tilled the soil
Often were stripped by grasshoppers,
Little rain, hot winds or hail
Or trampled by great hears of buffalo.
Winter covered the plains with ice and snow,
Great Blizzards roared thro days and nights
This we know for those who stayed to fight
There is no place like Nebraskas
One Hundred years of Pioneers!
Hard Work, toil and bitter tears,
They followed thro year after year
Until the soil began to unfold
Treasures and riches far greater than gold.
When the old stage coach on the lonely plain
Gave way to the chug, chug of the railroad train
From the clumsy Oxen to the fastest jet,
All this we'll never, never forget,
For there's no place like Nebraskas
First One Hundred Years!

Letters written by Lucy Bivins USHER
Winter 1982
Volume IV, No. 3
Letter to Helen GRANNIS from Lucy USHER, dated Plattsmouth, Ne, 23 Nov. 1873
Dear Niece. Your welcome letter came to hand last evening, glad to hear from you but sorry to
learn that brother Will has lost one of his eyes, well I an not blind but I can't see to do any
thing with out specks. I think you have winter early, here where we live they can plow just as
well as though it was summer we have had some very cold weather but the most of the time it has
been warm and pleasant we have had a very dry fall so far. There has been considerable ice
coming down Platte River but there was none in the Missouri above Platte. The wind as a general
thing blows very hard here in the Spring and fall and winter that is what makes it so cold, here
to day is nice and pleasant perhaps tomorrow will be cold and windy. About four weeks ago we had
about a half an inch of Snow but there is never any Sleighing here. I am glad to hear of old
friends but I suppose they have forgotten me. Thank you for the seeds they are a native of Iowa.
I have a lot of then planted. I will send you some morning glory seeds I got them of a woman
that cane from Michigan I never saw any like them before, if I ever got money enough ahead I
will get some pictures taken and I'll send one to you. I read in the Christian Standard of a man
named A. B. CRANNIS living in Hebron Thayer Co. Neb. I think he is a relative of yours. The last
letter from sister Abb said all were well. Today your Aunt Martha McCANON is 34 years old. I
have not heard from her in a long time. My health is not very good I have a bad caugh all the
time but I keep around and help do my work, the rest of the family are well as usual. Mary Ellen
was married the 6 of Nov. 1873. Well Jack and his Children have cone so I will stop for the
present. Well now supper over and the folks all gone to meeting but myself and Frank, he is
reading while I am writing. I would like to see you all, brother Will do you think of coming
west ever, if you do come and see us now don't wait till next year before you write again.
I had begun to think you did not care to hear from me, let us try to live so that we may meet in
the sweet field of Eden where we shall be forever with the Lord blessed be God his promises
are sure our love to one and all. Answer soon as ever your Aunt Lucy.

To Miss Hellen GRANNIS Onoville, N. Y. from Mrs. Lucy USHER, Framers Valley, Hamilton Co. NE
dated October 1, 1874
Dear Niece Hellen, You think that your Aunt has forgot you by this time. I have neglected
writing a long time. I received your letter in a few days after it was wrote but I was sick a
bed at that time, and we have been moving since then we are now living in Hamilton Co., Neb. We
have got a good 80 acres of prarie but no timber nor water we have to draw water for stock and
every thing out of a well ninety foot deep.
We did not have any corn this year for the grasshopers destroyed all the corn and about every
thing else in this part of the country except wheat, oats, and barley and rey it will be hard
times heree this winter. How is crops where you live? I have not heard from mother since in
August they were all well then. Thank you for the picture you sent me but you did not tell me
who it was but I supposed it was Hellen Grannis it is a very pretty picture if I can I will get
mine taken and send it to you. Did you hear that uncle Chancy BIVINS was dead? He died last
April with dropsey of the heart. Father has no relative living now except his own family not as
he knows of. The weather here now is pleasant, we had one big frost last month. I will have to
close for this is the third sheet of paper that I have filled up this afternoon and I want to
write to Mary Ellen yet tonight so I will close. Our love to all Pa and Ma especialy. Write
again soon and direct to Farmers Valley, Hamilton Co., Neb. So now good night from your Aunt
Lucy Usher.
