District only: The Four Seasons: Spring by Vivaldi This is The Four Seasons: Spring (repeat); by Antonio Vivaldi; This is The Four Seasons: Spring (repeat); I’ve heard it on TV! Sit down for this one big reason — Vivaldi wrote Four Seasons! Fall, winter, and summer, but it’s SPRING! 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Toccata and Fugue in d minor: Toccata by J. S. Bach This is it! It is the Toccata – and Fugue – in d minor. J.S. Bach — wrote this organ music. Toc-ca-ta, wish I could hear more! 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Concerto No. 3 for Horn and Orchestra: 3rd Mvt. by W. A. Mozart It’s Concert with an “o”, it’s Number 3, for horn and orchestra – you see. The 3rd Movement by W.A. Mozart – it’s cool to hear the French horn part! (Repeat) District only: Symphony No. 9 (Choral): 4th Mvt. by Beethoven This is Symphony Number 9 (Choral) — it’s the 4th movement. It was written by Beethoven. Hope this helps you, it’s your hint. Sometimes it’s called Ode to Joy, sung in German — my how strange. Different titles, but the same tune — it is just a simple change. 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Overture to William Tell: Finale by Rossini Overture, Overture, to William Tell; Overture, Overture — it’s the Finale. Overture, Overture, to William Tell — It was written by Rossini. (Repeat) District only: A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Wedding March by Mendelssohn This is a famous piece; do you know where it’s from? M-E-N-D-E-L-S-S-O-H-N! Mendelssohn! Based on a play by Shakespeare, named A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Then add Wedding March, and now you know the theme. 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms Listen now to this slower dance: Hungarian Dance, Number 5; B-R-A-H-M-S spells Brahms — Then it goes much quicker and you don’t have time to breath so you can on-ly sigh. Hungarian Dances — there are 21; 2 pianos — that would be 4 hands. (Violins play this gypsy tune so slow; then there comes a quite fast tempo!) 5th & 6th Graders: Carmen: Prelude to Act I by Bizet This is the story of a gypsy named Carmen from the opera by Bizet. It is the Prelude to Act I; if you listen, you’ll know what to say. (Repeat) 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Maple Leaf Rag by Joplin Bah doo bah doo bah, we’re all gonna play; bah do bah doo bah, a ragtime today - By Mister Joplin! (Wait) Listen as we play it, the Maple Leaf Rag. (Wait) You’ll appreciate it, the Maple Leaf Rag. Play those white keys, then play those black keys, and play with great ease, (when on the ivories, and play that stride bass, and fill this place with that good time ragtime of the Maple Leaf Rag.) 5th & 6th Graders: I Got Rhythm by Gershwin I got rhythm, I got music, I got my friend, who could ask for anything more? I got daisies in green pastures I got my friend, who could ask for anything more? Old Man Trouble, I don’t mind him. You won’t find him ‘round my door. I got starlight, I got sweet dreams, I got my friend, (who could ask for anything more — who could ask for anything more?) 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders: Rodeo: Hoedown by Copland There is no jingle for this piece – it just goes too fast! If you will listen for the xylophones playing and for the fast tempo (speed), you remember this piece. When I hear this music, it almost sounds Copland tried to make the instruments sound like horses “neigh-ing” – do you hear them? This composition has been used on lots of commercials, so you may have heard it. It became very famous several years ago when it was used on a commercial advertising beef. The commercial ended with the words, “Beef! It’s what’s for dinner!” * * * * * * * All 4th, 5th, & 6th grade Music students will be given the following: Music Memory List II which includes (13) composer’s names and the corresponding (13) composition titles; Music Memory List II “Jingle” page (which helps students remember the information); and, Music Memory List II Study CD which includes a listening excerpt (approximately 30 seconds) of all (13) compositions Each of the above items is marked so students can see which composers/compositions their particular grade level will be studying during the year (see list below). All students will learn all (13) “jingles” so that they will be prepared to participate in the District Contest (all 13 compositions) if they so choose (even though in-depth study of all 13 compositions will not be done in music class). 4th Grade Morley J.S.
