Mitosis- phases of cell life cycle when daughter cells are formed
Prophase
-chromosomes become short and
thick
-chromosomes are visible
-nuclear membrane disintegrates
-chromosomes move to middle
Metaphase
-chromosomes line up in middle of
cell
Anaphase
-duplicated chromosomes separate
-fibers shorten
-chromosomes are pulled to
opposite ends of cell
Telophase
-chromosomes uncoil and elongate
-nuclear envelope forms around
each new nucleus
-fibers disappear
Cytokinesis
Mitosis is complete- daughter cells are in interphase
-daughter cells split

DAY 1
After lesson on Methods of Reproduction:
Notes setup: Mitosis
Part 1:
1. Reading “Multiply, Divide, and Survive” Intro (p.102 and 103)
2. Discuss ideas that come up about reasons why cells divide- refer to journal answers
for discussion
Part 2:
Activity:
Reading, Sketching, Simulation
1. Prepare all materials for simulation of mitosis
-cut 3 pipe cleaners into 4cm pieces using ruler (should have total of 12 pieces)
-place all pieces in plastic bag
-put names on all student sheets (stages on Mitosis sheet 8.2)- 6 sheets total
-paper clip all sheets together and keep on desk with bag of pipe cleaners and tape
-glue chart worksheet into science notebook
2. Continue reading p. 104 out loud
3. Stop after each paragraph to fill information into chart
4. After each paragraph describing a stage of mitosis:
- Record description of phase in chart
-sketch phase using colored pencils in chart
-simulate phase using pipe cleaners on student sheet and tape down pipe cleaners
where they belong in that particular stage
-put the completed worksheet on the bottom of the pile of worksheets and paper
clip (so that they stay in order)
5. Continue to next paragraph- the next phase of mitosis
Part 3:
6. Put all materials in plastic bag with name on bag for next period (keep in box for each
class)
7. Put student sheets in science folder to be finished next class period
8. Review the stages that have been covered so far.
DAY 2
Journal Q: What is happening to the cell during Interphase?
Homework: Make flash cards to study phases of Mitosis
Part 1:
1. Answer journal question by asking for volunteers
2. Review stages of mitosis that we covered last class
3. Get out student sheets from last class (from science folder)
4. Get out science notebook- turn to chart from last class
5. Hand out bags to students containing their pipe cleaners
Part 2:
1. Continue reading, taking notes, sketching, and simulating all stages of mitosis.
Part 3:
1. Hand in completed student sheets to be checked (class work) paper clipped together
2. Explain Homework
Homework:
Make flash cards of the stages of mitosis to use to study.
Extra Credit: Come up with a sentence to help you remember the stages of mitosis in
order.
