Daniels and Lee H. Radebaugh, International Business: Environments and Operations, 12th Ed., Pearson. Supplemental Readings: Additional readings and/or list of readings will be distributed in class. Course Description and Objective: This course is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of the mechanics of doing business abroad and familiarize them with unique problems, characteristics of organizations engaging in international business. Major themes addressed include the emerging New Economy, globalization, differences in the socio-economic, political and cultural environments of international business, foreign direct investment, regional economic integrations and/or blocs, global strategy, methods of entering foreign markets, global marketing, global human resource management, and the multinational companies in terms of their organizational designs, managerial practices, etc. The course will consist of the usual lecture discussion format plus group presentations, student presentations and guest lecturers. Strong emphasis is placed on the discussion and presentation of case studies, text materials, and current events. The teaching style requires you to come well prepared to class, since you may be asked to discuss issues related to the assigned cases and/or readings. Course Requirements and Method of Instruction: 1. Textbooks: Students will have to bring the textbook to the class. 2. Examinations: Complete two (2) examinations. There will be a midterm and a comprehensive final examination. These examinations are designed to measure the student’s comprehension of the course material and the instructor’s ability to communicate the subject matter. Each exam consists of multiplechoice questions. 3. Team Case Analysis: Since case analysis and discussions are valuable learning tools for the professional life, students are required to complete one case study analysis with PowerPoint presentation. The class will be divided into teams (or individual presentation) Each team/individual will be required to select one of the assigned cases from the textbook (or a source required by the instructor), write a five-page analytical report, and make a class presentation on it. Additional updated information on the case organization may be obtained through interviews with managers, the study of the published and unpublished documents on the organization, as well as information that can bee found through Internet, in source books, professional journals, and/or magazines (this is your opportunity to be creative with visual aids). The teams may invite company managers as guest speakers to the class, show videos, etc. during their presentations. The presentations should be of the quality that you would feel comfortable making to the Vice President of International Operations You will be evaluated on the effectiveness, content, style, organization, delivery and professionalism of your presentation. No late presentations will be accepted unless excused by the instructor beforehand. 4. Team Country Analysis: In this analysis, each team will write a 5 page paper on a particular country of their choice. The topics to be discussed in the paper is given by the instructor below (page 4). The paper should be typed in size 12 and font Times New Roman (1.5-spaced). It should also include a cover page, Table of Contents, body of the paper (not less than five full pages), a Reference page, and Appendices as needed. The pages should be numbered. 5. Homework Assignments: Prepare for the homework assignments. To help bringing the world of international business into the classroom, articles, newspaper clipping and journals will extensively be used. The students are expected to get prepared on the assigned exercises before coming to class, and hand in a one page "Evaluate Remarks" on the findings of those. All assignments must be completed prior to class and are due at the beginning of class. Late assignments will ONLY be accepted when students have made prior arrangements with the instructor. All assignments must be typed. Handwritten work will not be accepted. Students are also expected fully participate in the discussion of the assigned homework. Homework assignments are NOT to be turned in via e-mail to the instructor. 2 6. Readings: Read all of the assigned readings prior to the class sessions. The students are expected to read thoroughly all of the assigned readings prior to the class sessions and be ready for full and meaningful participation in class discussions of the assigned material. In reading chapters, special attention should be paid to the new terminology, concepts, definitions and the cases at the beginning and the end of the chapters. It is expected that every student will actively contribute to the learning environment of the class. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in class discussion and activities, providing news clippings or topical handouts to support the readings, recommending guest speakers for the class. 7. Guest Speakers: We may invite guest speakers in order to contribute to our class discussions during the semester. Students are NOT to request additional extra credit work. General Policies: 1. Attendance and participation: Both the students and instructor are expected to be on time, unless prior arrangements have been communicated. At no time, should students wait longer than fifteen (15) minutes for the instructor. Students who will be missing a class when there is an assignment, examination etc., must contact the instructor prior to class if they wish to make-up the work. Otherwise, Obtaining information from missed classes is the responsibility of the student. 2. Withdrawal Policy: You may withdraw at any time before the withdrawal deadline for the academic semester (March 27, 2010; Friday at 17:001) through E-dönüşüm and receive a “W” for a grade. A “W” will not be calculated in the grade point average. 3. Incomplete: "I" grades will only be given if arrangements have been made with your instructor before the scheduled course ending. 4. Make-up Work: You are responsible for all material covered during absences. Make-ups for scheduled exams must be requested before the test date and are subject to approval of the instructor. Otherwise, note that the Midterm and Final Exams are NOT be made up. An “F” is recorded in both instances. 5. Scholastic Honesty: Students are expected to maintain the highest standard of individual honor in all scholastic work. You must do your own work; there are no exceptions. If you plagiarize or cheat in any way, you risk dismissal from class and expulsion from the university. Remember to cite your source in proper format for all presentations.
