5M3 FEBRUARY 2008 NEWSLETTER District Governor Virginia Spicer presenting International Director Dr. Patti Hill with a Peace Pipe from the Pipestone Quarry Our 5M3 Lions Midwinter Convention is history, and this was one of our biggest conventions in terms of attendance. That is wonderful. I hope we have enlightened a few more families & friends & guests in our world of Lionism and what we can accomplish by working together and having some fun while we do that! I would like to thank everyone for attending, as that is what makes our convention a success. Special thanks goes to our convention committee, PDG Dar Raddatz & Marie, PDG Allen Struck, PDG Barney Olson, PDG Bob Thoma & his hard-working Granite Falls Club, Wood Lake Club, Clarkfield Club & Lion Wayne Radloff for creating our memorial service and, of course to my partner in service, Gene, our VDG, Dan Snobl & wife, Mary were enormous help too. Let's not forget our musicians, Lion Al Lang and Holly Vandenberg on the keyboard. They did a great job. Now by naming names ~ no doubt someone is not listed, but not forgotten, as anyone that had anything to do in any way, shape or form is very much appreciated and helped to make a successful convention. THANK YOU TO EACH & EVERYONE OF YOU! Our guests for the weekend, Int'l Dir. Dr. Patti Hill and Leader Dog representative, Bunny Tabbatt, were a delight. Lovely ladies and they each had a moving message to convey. Our speaker for the Springpoint Project was very interesting, Henk Schuurman spoke about their groundbreaking research and how they would like to further their work with the help of the MD5M Lions. This is a very promising source of relief for diabetes with the islet cell transplantation. 5M3 CONVENTION PHOTOS A salute to 5M3 Lions International Directors, District Governor & Vice District Governor with partners in service Southwest Minnesota State University Lions Club Lion Rodney Gertner receiving Certificate of Appreciation PDG Allen Struck receiving the Presidential Leadership Award PDG Dar Raddatz receiving the 2006-2007 District Governor Award 5M3’S 2ND ANNUAL GOVERNOR’S “NIGHT OUT” BALL 5M3’s Induction Day (A Celebration of the 11 Anniversary of Lions Worldwide Induction Day) Saturday, April 26, 2008 Social Hour: 5:30 PM Prime Rib Dinner: 6:00 PM Induction Ceremony: 6:45 PM SMSU Lions Entertainment and Dance Cost: $17.00 per person Southwest Minnesota State University Conference Center Marshall, Minnesota th 5M3’s Induction Day is to welcome new Lions and recruit new members “to reinforce the impact each new Lion contributes to their club.” This will be a special evening where we welcome our newest members. We feel that it is appropriate to share the pride of what being a member means and to underscore the importance of getting involved, helping our neighbors in need and building closer communities in District 5M3 and the world. Worldwide Induction Day is usually a district or multiple district-wide event, but club participation is essential to this program. Worldwide Induction Day is not meant to replace existing club induction activities, but rather adds an exciting new event to complement those activities. Worldwide Induction Day is a symbolic statement to the Lions in our area and to the general public that Lions Clubs International is committed to recruiting quality members and meeting community needs. We would like each Lions club to pay for the cost ($18.00 per person) for each inductee/prospective member and their guest. The Rodeo is a day of exciting physical activities specifically designed for the students who attend. This year we anticipate 225 students participating from 25 school districts. The event is free of charge to the students. Seven SMSU students are working closely to organize, plan, and run this event. Over 125 SMSU student volunteers will work during the day to provide this activity day for our guests. The planning group is requesting your help. We were wondering if your Lions Club would consider making a donation to the Rodeo for the purchase of adapted equipment suitable for the public school students who attend. The only way we can purchase new equipment is through the generosity of organizations like yours, since the budget we receive from the administration is limited. We thank you for any past contributions you have made. We hope you will seriously consider donating again. If your club has not donated in the past, we hope you will sincerely think about making a donation. Any financial help would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to me at the above address. If there are any questions, we would be very happy to answer them at your convenience. My office number is (507)-537-7987 and my email is eradel@southwestmsu.edu. This past calendar year, the contributions increased 10% with a total of $100,164. I would like to thank the District Governors, the District Chairs and all the participating Lions and Lions Clubs for all your efforts. And I hope we can continue to increase our support this year. HSDM graduated 23 teams in 2007, and they expect to graduate 26 teams this year. Included in the 23 were two autism assist dogs. They plan to train four more autism teams in 2008. There is a large waiting list for these dogs, many more than they can train without additional resources. The Heel and Wheel fundraising walk will be on Sunday, September 14. double or triple the participation by Lions and Lions Clubs this year. I hope we can Hearing & Service Dogs of Minnesota is open for tours right after each Eye Bank and Hearing Tour. Also, they have the “One Hour Tails To Tell Tours” on Saturday, March 29 at 10am; Saturday, May 17 at 10am; and Thursday, August 7 at 7pm. Please RSVP. (See next page) MERLO Training Shooting Star Casino at Mahnomen on April 12th, 2008 Dear District Governors, District Governor Elects, Vice District Governor Elects and District MERLO Teams of MD5M: 1. Each District will have a limit of 10 Lion participants they can send to the MERLO Training. This would include: a. Present MERLO District Cabinet members b. Present DG and DGE c. Potential next year MERLO cabinet members d. Other interested Lions 2. The format will be a one day seminar workshop presented in a classroom set-up. 3. The MERLO Training will begin 8:30 am on Saturday morning, with a one hour lunch break, and sessions beginning at 12:30 pm ending at 4:30 pm. 4. The morning will have presentations by the 5M MERLO Chairpersons followed in the afternoon of presentations from each District. 5. District Presentations will be the “meat” of this MERLO Training: a. Many of us ask the question? How does each district recruit new members, new clubs, retain members, orientate members? Well it is time to share those ideas so_______________________________________________________ . b. I am asking each district to have a presentation of the above ideas to share with other districts that will strengthen our strategy to build our membership in 5M. What a better way to see and hear why others are successful, and the tactics they use to bring new volunteers to Lions. c. The presentation should be no longer than 15 minutes with 5 minutes allotted for questions. The presentation should be presented by one or more Lions (preferably, not the DG or DGE). This would be good time for your MERLO cabinet members to shine. d. The presentation should be written down and printed on paper, stapled and collated, to be passed out to others in attendance for ideas to use when they return to their own district. 6. District Governors and DGEs, it will be your responsibility to get these presentations organized so that this MERLO workshop will have strength. 7. This is definitely a new approach to the MERLO training procedure, but I strongly feel we need to share and not just be lectured to by 5M MERLO Chairpersons or other speakers. 8. Agenda: 8:00 am - Coffee and rolls – Welcome - PCC Keith Johnson 8:30 am – Orientation presentation – PDG Bob Wharton 9:00 am – Extension presentation – PDG Roger Palmer 9:30 am – BREAK – water and beverages 9:45 am – Membership/Retention presentation – PCC Brian Sheehan 10:30 am – Leadership presentation – PDG Robert Vokes 11:00 am – District Presentation – 5M1 11:30 – NOON LUNCH – on your own 12:30 pm – District presentation – 5M2 12:50 pm – District presentation – 5M3 1:10 pm – District presentation – 5M4 1:30 pm – District presentation – 5M5 1:50 pm – District presentation – 5M6 2:10 pm – BREAK – water and beverages 2:30 pm - District presentation – 5M7 2:50 pm – District presentation – 5M8 3:10 pm – District presentation – 5M9 3:30 pm – District presentation – 5M10 3:50 pm – District presentation – 5M11 4:10 pm – District presentation – 5M13 9. Each person attending from the District will receive $75.00 if they attend for the entire sessions. 10. District budgets should take care of mileage and food. Many of you will plan to stay overnight on Friday or Saturday and arrangements should be made with Ex. Sec. Bob Harms and the room expense will be your responsibility. Ex. Sec. Bob has rooms blocked in advance for this training. 11. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Please send a list of Lions attending the MERLO training from your District to Ex Sec. Bob Harms by March 15th, 2008. That list should include the name of the Lion, the office they hold in MERLO, DG, DGE, or other position in your District. Another reason for the list will give you the # of copies to bring for sharing with each person attending the MERLO training. This will be a big help in reducing waste of copies printed, or the problem of not enough produced. 12. A power point computer and projector will be set up for CD’s and memory stick presentations. 13.
