SELL THAT CEREAL!!! Consumerism and Advertising: A Cross-Curricular Project (Health, Speech, Art) Due Dates Introduction of project: Concept for Project Due: Cereal Art Project Due: Persuasive Speeches: PART I: CONSUMERISM As we study Consumerism and Advertising Appeals in Health, you are going to put your persuasive skills to work! In this project, you will create a new brand of cereal, market it using one of the advertising appeals we learned about, and then create a TV commercial to persuade your audience to buy your product. For this project you will need: a cereal box art supplies imagination In these activities you will: Analyze a variety of advertising techniques Analyze the effects of advertising on the choices you make as a consumer PART II: Cereal Box Create a new cereal! Re-design your box with information that will help sell your cereal. Be creative and artistic! A few guidelines: Front: Must have a picture or catchy cover. Must include name of cereal, brand logo, and other eye-catching information. Sides of boxes: Must include nutritional information, a list of ingredients, and company information (example: name, phone number, address of where customers can get more information about your product). If this all fits on one side, the other side could be a trivia/game or recipe ideas using your product. The information for ingredients can be realistic or fictional (Ingredients for Lizard Pops! could include lizard tails, tree leaves from the Amazon, etc.) Back: Depending on your Advertising Appeal, the back may have a game or contest. It may also include ways to live a healthy lifestyle (using your product, or course!). This is a chance for you to be creative, but also to really sell your cereal to consumers. You may want to think of putting a “free-bee” inside! That can provide incentive for people to buy! PART III: Speech In a short (1 minute) persuasive speech, you will follow the format of a TV commercial to sell your cereal! Using techniques that coincide with your advertising appeal, you will convince the audience that they should buy your product. You will use your re-designed cereal box for a prop. You may use other props such as a costume (example: if your cereal will help you stay fit, you may want to wear workout gear) or a “before and after” picture. Again, be creative! Guidelines for Speech: 1 minute Well-organized and memorized Appropriate language/content -- Your “angle” for selling your cereal depends on your appeal to the audience. (EXAMPLE: if you are selling a kids’ cereal, you would use much different language then if you were selling a healthy, nutritious cereal to the business-person who is always on the go!) Use cereal box as prop Delivery – eye contact, volume and pace, posture, facial expressions Your presentation will be scored using the State Wide Scoring Guide for Speaking. We will go over the criteria on the State Wide Scoring Guide and this work sample will be placed in your portfolio. REMEMBER TO DO YOUR PERSONAL BEST!!!! Superstar Extension: By yourself or with a small group, film a TV commercial! ou can use your cereal or think of different product to advertise.
