Other Kinds of Speeches
*Your goal with these speeches is to apply the speech techniques that we have already learned to speeches
that are used in special circumstances. For ALL of the following speeches you must include:
-notecard(s) with a correctly written speech outline
-good delivery skills (posture, verbal, no playing, charisma, eye contact, etc.)
-the specified requirements listed below for that type of speech.
Award Presentation/ Award Acceptance
Create an award to be given. Have one partner present the award and the other accept it.
Presentation speech
-be brief: 2-3minutes maximum
-Follow this pattern:
a. describe the award (can be first or last)
b. indicate the values the award attempts to honor
c. show how the actions and character of the recipient reflect those values
Acceptance speech
-be brief: 2-3 minutes maximum
-acknowledge that the award has been accepted and appreciated
-thank everyone involved in both presenting and helping you attain the award
-mention your commitment to the values and actions for which the award is given.
Eulogy
Choose a person who has died (or an imaginary one) and imagine that you and your partner have a chance
to give a eulogy at their funeral. Both partners need to prepare independent, but not overlapping,
commemorative speeches.
Eulogy
-3 minutes minimum
-honor and praise the individual
-comfort and uplift the listeners
-respect the solemnity of the moment
-pick out several of the most noble and praiseworthy attributes of the person and extol them with
examples from the person’s life.
-use lofty, but not “overdone” language
Entertaining Duo Speech
Choose an occasion and create an entertaining speech that involves both partners. There can be interaction
or trading off. The combined “speech” must have a clear purpose or message.
Entertaining Speech
-6 minutes total
-Choose an occasion and tell the audience
-get the audience to relax, smile, and enjoy the occasion
-use as much original material as possible
-let your personality come through
-use vivid language
-memorize most of your material, especially punchlines
NOTE: Your speeches together must comprise all the aspects of one correct speech format (not
two).
Public Relations Speech
Create or choose a company to promote to the community. Have one person be the Introducer. Have the
other be the company spokesperson.
Introduction Speech
-Choose the occasion and tell it to the audience
-keep it brief 2-3 minutes maximum
-be absolutely accurate
-suit your level of formality to the occasion
-make the speaker you are introducing feel good
-show the relationships among the speaker’s background, the chosen topic, and the audience’s
interests
-show why the speaker’s background qualifies him or her to speak on this topic
-build expectation for the speaker
Public Relations Speech
-2-3 minutes minimum
-promote your company, service, or institution
-promote a positive image of your organization to the community
-make three general points:
a. outline the goals and purposes of the organization
b. show the audience how those goals tie in with their needs and values
c. indicate how the organization can help people
Commencement Speech
Imagine that you are at a graduation ceremony and that you are one of the graduates. Give a short
commencement speech to your class. Your partner will introduce.

-celebrate the occasion
-honor the graduates
-hit 3 key points
a. applaud the accomplishments of students
b. recognize the contributions of those who helped them
c. tell the graduates of the challenges ahead
-give advice but not too much
Dedication Speech
Create a place or monument to dedicate. Give a dedication speech and have your partner give an
introduction speech

Dedication Speech
-2-3 minutes minimum
-highlight the meaning of the new creation or new endeavor
-focus the listeners’ attention on the goals and values that the new creation represents or stands for
-use clear, lofty language
-memorize key passages, especially attention-getter and conclusion
You may do any one of these speeches in a humorous vein if you so choose.
You and your partner may choose any of the above, even if another group is doing the same assignment.
Wedding Speech/Toast
Choose a couple that are to be married. Give a wedding speech as the father/mother of the bride and have
your partner give a wedding speech as best man/maid of honor, each ending in a toast.
Best Man/Maid of Honor speech
-2-3 minutes maximum
-an appropriate joke for the audience to lighten the mood
-a story of how the bride and groom met.
-a story of when the best man met the bride
-advice to keep the marriage strong throughout the years
-all should be heartfelt, personal, not vulgar, not referring to past girl/boyfriends, or negatives.
-toast with a wish/prayer
Father of the Bride/Mother of the Bride speech
-welcome
-thank parents of the groom, the pastor, and any others
-story of bride’s birth
-share reasons for being proud of the bride as a person
-share reasons for being proud of her choice in the groom
-give advice to keep the marriage strong throughout the years
-toast with a wish/prayer
