Ceremonial/ Special Occasion Speech Requirements
Speeches will be presented
. You will have a choice for which type of
speech you would like to give. It can be a toast, eulogy, award presentation/acceptance, or
commemoration. You may choose to work alone or with other classmates.
Each presentation will be evaluated on an individual basis and will be graded on the same criteria.
Each speech must be one to three minutes long and should be mostly memorized. You may use one
note card if necessary, but it may not have your speech written out on it. These cards will be collected
after your speech and should only have a few notes on them.
Evaluation will be based on the following:
10- Semi-memorization; not read from card
10- Delivery aspects including eye contact, gestures, posture
20- Content: well written, appropriate, creative, original, follows guidelines for speeches (use your
notes!)
10- Time: 1-2 minutes
50 point maximum
Award presentation and acceptance:
Presenting- describe organization and award, give reasons for reward/ why recipient deserves award
(accomplishments and qualifications), introduce award winner
Accepting- [accept award with left hand, shake hands with right] thank person/ organization who gave
award, explain why award or honor is important to you and how you feel about receiving it, give
thanks and credit where deserved, thank again
May have certificate or award to present (optional)

Holidays
Toast:
Stand up, hold glass in right hand when proposing the toast and raise the glass toward the person you
are toasting when finished; short, appropriate and possibly humorous (not humiliating) story
Wedding
To someone retiring
Eulogy or speech of tribute:
Acknowledge loss, celebrate life of deceased by acknowledging legacy left to humanity, use
illustrations to emphasize uniqueness of person, bring the group together and ease the sense of loss
Stress dominant traits, outstanding achievements, and influence person had on events and people;
biographical account of life may be included; quotations, stories, examples
